My cousin Eric’s son Marsh and his lovely Lauren got married yesterday! The day itself was so delighted it cried a bit of happy rain….just enough to enjoy a panoply of white umbrellas! And to draw the curtain back on brilliant sunshine as Lauren entered to a string quartet playing “Here Comes The Sun!” I got to see my closest cousins some of who came all the way from Alaska! Ok. This is the layout. The Beastie Seed Light Burst quilt is getting stitched together. Of course I find myself tweaking and adjusts as I go along cause that’s how I roll. Some things are just black and white. This time I printed on sheer dotted Swiss and some lovely heavyweight cotton then layered them together (that’s to first frame.) And sweet Althea gave me a couple canvas bags to print on. That’s my first one (in the last frame.) You ever feel like this? Helen Keller was a wild child rampaging through a mysterious and confusing world when, shortly before her 7th birthday, Annie Sullivan got through to her. By finger signing W. A. T. E. R. into one of her palms while holding the other under a gushing pump Helen was drawn out from the dark confinement of her deafness and blindness. Her desire to learn everything ignited. It was 1887. Seventeen years later, in 1904, she graduated from Radcliffe college with honors. Helen traveled the world advocating for human rights and authored many books. Laying out composition ideas for this new fabric piece. Using 7” squares, for the most part…..(consistency is not my strong suit, or perhaps I could say that spontaneous improvisation is one of my strengths?) I took the suggestion of Timna Tarr (love her piecing) to create a few rules for myself. 1)Use only black, white, and red. 2)Create patterns using circles (dots) and stripes (lines.) 3)Combine fabrics of my own design/making with ones I’ve found. 4)Use images from the parable I wrote, illustrated, and turned into a 6” square book called The Little Beastie. (1990-3 years after the birth of my 2nd child, a boy.) My friend Allegra dubbed this a seed symphony after I told her how Beasties originally appeared when I was pregnant with my first child, 43 years ago. I made an etching for that girl called “Seed Music;” showing life sprouting, maturing, and then dying only to further more life. Like Borage planting itself year after year all over the garden. I like the first design better, with the play of light and dark. There’s not enough glow to justify the second design. When I saw this being used in my daughter’s kitchen at a family birthday party I remembered I hadn’t photographed it yet. Her sweet step mama held it up for me. For this one I used a clear washable Elmer’s glue resist. Had to tint it pink to see where I was putting it. The colors are acrylics with GAC900 mixed in. Makes for better light-fastness and a softer hand.
