something I've been thinking about is that one time Sophie acsedentally drilled in every single star map she had ever seen into Fitz's mind. Like, I remember he even said something like "I'll never have to study again" which suggests that she like, imprinted it into his head.

And Fitz doesn't have a photgraphic memory either, but now for the rest of his life his clearest memories will be freaking star maps.

It's been centuries, he's an old man. His ears have reached the ceiling. And all that's left is those dang star maps lmao

whoever said that to dex was actually just evil because that implies that dex has so little value that they wouldn't even give him fake unneeded money

how do the elves not have any sort of inflation because when they're born they're given thousands of lusters (with the exchange rate being insanely high) I'm not sure their jobs give money?

plus the overprinting of bills would lead to their value decreasing, right?

See but Sophie not even signing up for the match is the biggest middle finger. Yes she has good reason not to even if she wanted to, but the vast majority of the elves would just see an elf with 12 million abilities, a special noble position (team whatever you call it) and the ability to communicate with animals choosing NOT to register.

the middle finger isn't proving the system wrong by making powerful bad match babies, the middle finger is saying "we don't care"

it's saying that being a bad match and being talentless doesn't make you less valuable, not that the breeding system has no effect. I hate to say it, but genetics are a thing. Pairing two talentless elves will most likely make a talentless baby. It is what it is. Sophie disregarding this and having a child with whoever she loves and having a child because she wants a child WITHOUT thinking about how likely it is for her kid to have a talent is the biggest, truest middle finger.

I guess a talentless child isn't the middle finger, but is rather a sweet ironic addition.

I always find it so entertaining when people talk about Sophie's brown eye genes getting passed down and single-handedly changing another elven norm

BECAUSE

it is entirely possible (if not probable) that Sophia carries the ressive gene for blue eyes and that if she has a kid there's a 50 percent chance that the kid will just have regular blue eyes lol. Like the kid can't even have blue eyes and carry the genes for brown eyes, so no epic symbolism lol.

This also makes me think of all those Sokeefe fanfics where their kid(s) all have brown eyes and 12 million abilities, but I would just like to point out that 1. Keefe's new abilities are not genetic and can't really be passed down and 2. Sophie's abilities probably can't be passed down because of the amount of genetic tweaking her embryo had to go through to accommodate the abilities.

I like thinking of their future kid as an actually really normal elf with one MAYBE two talents who is really chill but kind of enjoys casually name-dropping their own last name at foxfire. Like he or she is just some guy with some INSANE parents.

the whole idea is that talentless kids are only supposed to come from bad matches or undesirable elves. Sohpie (the most powerful elf ever) having a talentless kid would actually make the system look really stupid, because if Sophie foster can't even guarantee a kid with at least one talent, what's the point of the system?

The funniest thing in the first kotlc book is how Sophie can't read. Like she's literally HARDWIRED not to be able to understand the only language that most elves use to write.

And it's never explained how she gets by that. Can her professors read english? Did she learn the actual runes? Does Grady or Dex translate all of her assignments for her?

Also what about the neverseen's notes? Do they know Sophie can't read "normal" words and they just send her stuff in English? Shannon PLEASE explain

okay so going along with my one dream I had where Sophie is actually just a really smart human that accidentally fools all the elves into thinking she is one when Fitz takes her over, I have some fun additions for you to peruse at your leisure.

I like when people lean into the idea that elves are soooo "hot" that they lean into uncanny valley, so when Sophie first meets Fitz she's actually kind of creeped out

Same thing with eyes, like elvin eyes are weirdly flat and two-dimentional in color, not like human eyes.

Sophie's first favorite elf was enwin bc like it says in the books, he 's less movie star like and in this case just hot instead of uncanny valley.

Part of why elves find her eyes so crazy isn't just the color but the human depth to it

sophie is autistic and that plays into the crazy lights and colors messing with her head and constantly over simulating her

she still get super involved with the black swan and neverseen bc human her is much more nosey and she digs through her dead adotive sisters stuff like right away and ends up contacting one of the two groups.

she figures out fairly quickly that she really is just human and there's been a huge mistake but she has to hide it bc at that point her parents already think she's dead

Being an older teen trying to transition into more academic reading habits is so rough as a kotlc fan. Like??? I'm currently reading a book about the decline of the Roman Empire (and liking it) but I'll randomly start tweaking out because paragraphs are usually a page long.

What do you MEAN there's no one-word paragraph breaks in my non-fiction reading????

Oh and hevean forbid I write like a normal person either. I kid you not I ended one of my AP Lang. and Comp. essays with one word in italics.
