Inktober #7- ‘Shy’
Ginny putting her elbow in the butterdish in Chamber of Secrets. Poor thing can’t manage to even say something in front of Harry. So cute.

This is SO important.
I think it’s different for everyone, how they respond. For me, I’m trying to distance HP from JK. I will not be purchasing anything that supports JK, or supporting her in any other way. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for her behavior. And I, too, am utterly exhausted by JK’s constant stream of hate and bigotry.
BUT Harry Potter has meant so much to me and to many fellow members of the LGBTQ community. It’s a story full of allegory for outsiders and comfort for outcasts. For me, the story is SO MUCH MORE than what JK intended it to be, so much more than what she originated. And that’s due mostly to the community and fan works. The world she created has extended past her vision. Creators have made it more. More diverse and more inclusive, just like the books teach.
So, for me? Harry Potter doesn’t belong to her anymore. It belongs to us. It is bigger than she can ever be.
Some thoughts as an angry Harry Potter fan:
I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be a Harry Potter fan, and fan artist lately. My #1 priority right now is supporting the transgender community. Therefore I plan to never make any purchase that will support JK Rowling ever again. After all the hateful things she’s said and done, especially with the news about the subject matter of her next book, I can’t, and won’t support her anymore.
Where does that leave Loquacious Literature and my comics? Does hating JKR mean I can’t like Harry Potter? I don’t know, honestly. This magical world that brought me joy, comfort and solace for over 20 years… suddenly feels tainted.
My plan for now is to finish Obliviate Volume 3, which I’ve already been working on all year. And then to donate a large chunk of the profits to a few Trans charities.
For now, I still plan on drawing comics, but I may switch gears to more original work, or other fandoms occasionally in the months and years to come. I hope that is ok with you.
Let me know what you think - how have you all been coping? Are you trying to separate the author from the work? Are there any books you’d recommend to read that you wish there was more fanart for? 😅
I hope you’re all hanging in there.
❤️Katie
