I was reading Hilda and the Troll, and I noticed that Twig was first sketched as a cat with a beak. I can’t tell which idea was more adorable, a deer fox or a bird cat lol. So I made a doodle.

Suppose it was June, a month of pride celebrated by the LGBTQIA+ community. It is a time in which people from many different backgrounds, often from across previously divisive racial and class lines, can celebrate their common queerness in their own, unique ways. A moving display of a minority group flourishing in the face of their oppressors. Thus it is in the spirit of this time of celebration of unity in Otherness that I must ask:

Tell me, Will. Would you, who claim to be such a staunch ally of the homosexuals, be willing to bounce butt booty naked for me? Be the sloppy to my top? Get jiggly and wiggly on my hannibal pecker?

I can't stop thinking about how much mole skeletons remind me of whale skeletons.

We're all familiar with Space Whales but nobody ever talks about Space Moles. Or Desert Whales. Or Giant Ocean Moles. And that's terrible.

I finally got around to watching the director’s commentary for Kubo and the Two Strings, so here’s some of my notes:

- The origami models are made of a plastic that is soft and malleable. For their transformation sequences, such as when Kubo animates Little Hanzo to fight the monsters, a mixture of cinefoil and painted paper towels were discovered to be the best materials to use.

- For that scene when Sariatu is telling Kubo a story about Hanzo, Charlize Theron and Art Parkinson recorded their lines together. This interaction helped them to voice their lines more genuinely.

- The sound design for the sisters’ voices in their first appearance was designed so that in the cinema - which is a 3D, left and right, front, middle and back system if you’re unfamiliar with this - their voices would bounce off everywhere, making the audience feel trapped by them, just like Kubo did.

- To create snow in Kubo, sets used a mixture of salt, shredded Styrofoam and wax.

- When Kubo was interacting with Little Hanzo inside the dead whale, they had to animate them separately. This is because the actual puppet for Little Hanzo was 700% to scale to Kubo. So, in the original shots of Kubo moving Little Hanzo, Kubo was actually miming where Little Hanzo would be and Little Hanzo was later composited into Kubo’s hands by the VFX team.

- Canon 5D cameras were used to film Kubo.

- When designing Beetle’s cave, the question was: “What’s the Feudal version of a man cave?” CONFIRMED: BEETLE’S CAVE IS A SAMURAI VERSION OF A MAN CAVE.

- Matthew McConaughey once did a gazillion push-ups in order to deliver a line for Beetle with the right amount of breathlessness.

- The skeleton monster was animated by one specialised animator for over a year. Apparently, he spent so much time with the puppet that he started talking to the skeleton monster, greeting it “Good morning”, “Goodnight” and calling it “Bud.”

- It took three carpenters, four landscape artists, four model makers, two scenic artists, a metal fabricator and two machinists about four months to create the Leafy Galleon.

- To record Kubo and Beetle’s lines for when they were eating, Parkinson and McConaughey were given sushi to eat. And in order to get a genuine laugh for Kubo’s dialogue from Parkinson, Knight and others tried to make him laugh while he was eating the sushi. It worked. And they made a mess in the recording booth.

- Brad Schiff, the animation supervisor, swam around in the local public pool while wearing a kimono to record reference footage for animating the underwater scenes.

- When Monkey was wrapping Kubo’s blanket around him as he slept, her arms had to be detached for part of the movement because the puppet couldn’t reach that far.

- Kubo’s dream sequence with the Moon King is set in a paper world fabricated by the Moon King. All the paper in there is actually an off white - the same pale colouring as the Moon King. The only colour it gets is solely from the lighting. It’s all an illusion; there is literally no life, no colour, in the world of the Moon King.

- One of the inspirations for the Moon King’s face was the late Peter Cushing. 

- The armour and the Moon Beast were treated with invisible, ultra-violet paint and exposed to black light in order to get their glow.
