His breathing was sharp, the air dragging harshly in his lungs, though the night air was warm and heavy with the scent on oncoming rain. In a fist tightly clasped by his side was an octagonal locket, its sides digging into the pink flesh of the fingers that curled around it. The edge of cliff stretched out before him, yawning black and devouring all light save the occasional sweep of the lighthouse’s beam every so often. There was no moon.

A/N: a close friend called me a racist, but didn't explain. This isn't the first time he's done so, and I asked him why, but he said, "If you can't figure it out I won't tell you." I asked other friends of mine, and since I have a pretty diverse friend group, they said I wasn't. In both times he's called me that, it's been completely out of context, as though it's just a regular insult and not something to be taken seriously as it should be. I dunno.

I'm just a bundle of taut nerves

anxiety swelling, brewing, bubbling up within me,

because of what you said

because I'm hard in places I should be soft,

and I try to be receptive

of criticism,
