Rūrangi (2020).
A trans man reunites with his ex-boyfriend. ID in alt.
For a review of Rūrangi, see this link. It's a movie about being trans, being Māori, discovering your sexuality, being exhausted by activism, and reconnecting with family. It was originally released as a series, but was re-released as a feature film later.
Caz, the trans protagonist, is played by a trans male actor (Elz Carrad). All trans characters are played by trans actors. The writer (Cole Meyers) is trans. Tweedie Waititi, Taika Waititi's sister, was brought in as a consultant to develop the film's Māori storylines.
I highly recommend this film.

I remember the first time I saw you, out there in the parking lot. Really? I thought we met downstairs at that buffet thing. Yeah, that’s where we met, but I’d already seen you a couple of times, getting out of your car, all studly. And for the next couple of Sundays I timed it so I’d pull in next to you. You were watching me? Stalker. I saw you before we talked too.

The Wise Kids (Stephen Cone, 2011) 5/5
I followed upĀ Henry Gamble’s Birthday PartyĀ with another film of Stephen Cone’s that’s also on Netflix called The Wise Kids. This one is also about young people growing up in a Christian community and it’s just as great as Henry Gamble, or arguably, even better. The thing that really struck out to me with this one is just how much I loved the 3 main characters. Even Laura whom I did not expect to like because she’s this sort of perky girl, super into Jesus and the type to end her prayers with ā€œIn your awesome, holy, amazing, awesome name.ā€ Personally, I think I relate to Brea the most. But yeah, I liked all of them, so much so that I actually wished this was like a TV show or perhaps a longer film so I can follow all of their journeys all the way to college and all that. Just like Henry Gamble, these kids face the challenges not only of trying to be a good Christian but also, the difficulties and the changes that come along with growing up and coming to terms with one’s self. It’s ultimately a heartwarming film but also painfully sad, at times.Ā
I’ve been thinking about how I’d like to show these films to the Christian church here. I know some of the kids that go there and I feel like this film could help them if they’re facing some of the same issues themselves or just so they could watch something that’s relatable for them but I don’t know how the adults will react to this film tbh.Ā
I heard that Stephen Cone works as an acting teacher which makes sense because Ā he brings out amazing performances from these amateur actors, particularly the young ones. Even he, himself, has a role in this film and he’s great. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to see the rest of his films but I’ll find a way because I think he’s a terrific writer, director and actor and quite shockingly underrated.Ā
