Sometimes I think about aliens, the fully sapient kind, and how we will never be able to view or talk to them. Considering the universe is incomprehensibly big and nearly infinite, it would be pretty dumb to think we are the only species in existence that have sapience, a society, tech, ect.

The thing is though, because of how big and empty the universe is, we will never be able to discover creatures like us and those same creatures will never discover us either. We will never know what they look like, how they communicate, or what their society is. The only thing we do know is that they most likely exist because we exist.

I always found it odd how people think about aliens visiting Earth and automatically assume they would want to enslave us or whatever. Maybe that could be the case. But what if they visited Earth because they're simply curious? Curious about seeing all kinds of different life that they never got to see before. Or maybe they want to compliment us about how we make our ice cream or something. Wanting to coexist and communicate with us, which could lead to all sorts of discovery's. Such as if we are really as sapient, intelligent, developed, and self aware as we think we are or have just been severely overestimating ourselves for countless years. We have something to compare ourselves to now!

But that will never happen. Because we're too far away from each other. We can go visit our moon multiple times. Maybe Mars sometime soon. But we will never discover a planet with creatures like us. And something about that is intriguing yet depressing to me.

I wonder if they feel the same.

I GOT TO HOLD ONE OF MY FAVORITE LOCAL BUGS!!!

Meet a fellow from genus Laphria, the bumblebee robber fly! This individual was so polite and crawled right on my finger when I offered it and hung out with me until I offered the same leaf I took it from and it crawled right back. Most well behaved insect I've handled in a long time. I also later moved a carpenter bee out of the parking lot and I got to have a direct comparison of what their feet felt like on skin in the same day. The robber fly had much softer feet, reminiscent of holding a large spider. I'm sure you can see those fleshy pads on its feet, those are the pulvilli and they help the animal adhere to surfaces. A lot of robber fly species have reduced pulvilli or none at all. Not this guy tho, those are some proper bug paws. Bees have much smaller or no pulvilli (I'm uncertain if any hymenopterans have them at all it was difficult to get a straight answer when looking it up, I was told both yes and no, if an entomologist would like to clarify for me I'd love to know) and their tarsal claws hook right into the skin when they walk on you, making their feet feel more prickly!
