Some of the most beautiful wood art comes from wood that has been rescued, like this spalted birch bowl crafted by Mike Love of Idabel, OK. "Spalting" is simply coloration cause by fungi, and in this case it occurred during the first stages of rot after the tree had died.

Mesquite is a favorite among Woodturners because it is very stable and can be turned green with very little warping.
It is one of the hardest and most durable of all native American woods. Mesquite lends itself well to many diverse applications such as: beautiful hardwood flooring, doors, mantles, cabinets, and fine furniture.

The nine ladies got started today by turning green pear wood into an egg and cup. During tomorrow's session they'll exercise new skills by creating rolling pins, biscuit cutters, goblets, pens, and even jewelry beads.
