I guess we puttin' the rambles on the art blog. Ah well. Things change as time goes. <3

Hunted. My beloved critter. Keep in mind that I say all of this while also drawing it as the only quadrupedal voice in my lineup and refer to it with it/its pronouns. A lot of this owes to what Hunted is in the game - it's a manifestation of your survival instinct.

It speaks in short bursts and with urgency and uses terms that clearly implies a very different thought patterns to other voices. It's very aware of its surroundings in a way that the others aren't until it's pointed out to them.

And y'know what that screams to me? Autism.

Yes Hunted is a little strange, speaks a little strange, moves a little strange, looks a little strange. Ultimately it's still a voice - something broken off from the Long Quiet same as any other voice. The thing is that in the game we primarily see it in situations of extreme stress - where it's going to be at its most terse.

In Beast -> Wild and in Eye of the Needle we see a lot of its more strategic side come out. It expresses a level of thought beyond animal instinct, even if its raw wording is still a little odd.

It reminds me of myself, in a way. I have a few "feral" habits of my own, to which my partners can attest. I purr and growl without even realizing, I lay around in strange ways, and all of this comes without so much as a second thought. My therapist theorizes that it's something tied to my autism. A comforting set of behaviors.

I like to think Hunted does something of the same, and thanks to its nature its body is changed to reflect that.

Idk! This is a little rambly but I think it about covers my thoughts.

TL;DR: Hunted is a little terse and speaks a little strangely, yes, but it's as much a person as anyone else. It's just autistic <3

something that interests me about the stp fandom is the different interpretations of the hunted. is he some feral dude? or a literal animal? very much depends on who you ask

it also makes hunted shipping a tricky thing for me, bc i’m a furry who thinks way too much about the ethics of hunted kissing.

bc iirc in the game he’s like the other voices in that he’s just as sentient as they are, completely aware of his situations, it’s purely based on the player to interpret him as feral dude or literal animal. me, i always lean towards literal animal. which, again, makes hunted shipping VERY tricky.

i think spousemouse is adorable! but then i’m also like. that’s a bird man kissing a bird cat deer thing. but that bird cat deer also has human level sapience and passes the harkness test. but it’s also a feral animal to me. SO HMMM

these are all my own opinions of course! if you imagine hunted as a feral dude, have at it! if you ship him with other voices or princesses then go wild! i think it’s just a me thing and i think too hard about it. but i’d love to know your thoughts!!!
