I've been thinking a lot lately about Gale and Mystra, trying to parse the nature of that dynamic as I get inside his head a little for a thing I've been writing. I'm not a D&D player, and honestly don't have the time or inclination to be learning the vaaaaast amounts of confusing lore, so it's mostly been a lot of me roaming around in circles bumping into things.

Somehow I got to thinking about his name again. It's always been kind of funny to me that he considers 'Gale of Waterdeep' to be this impressive wizard name because, I mean... ok, sure. *head pat* 'Cause y'know what it sounds like to me? Sounds like the kind of moniker an impassive goddess would give to one of the many wizards she was fucking around with in order to keep them straight in her mind. "Okay, Friday I have Keith of Candlekeep... Then next Tuesday, ah, Gale of Waterdeep... Saturday lunch with Karen from Finance..."

But that bit of mental shitposting did actually twig something.

"Gale of Waterdeep...you look well." That smarmy, manipulative greeting that makes my blood boil every time, lol...

vs, if he tells her he's going to claim the Crown of Karsus...

"Crown yourself, Gale Dekarios, and you will learn what it means to carry such weight upon your shoulders." How quick she is to address him by that name he hates the second he challenges her, like a scolding schoolmarm. Such a direct yet underhanded way to instantly knock him down a peg. And what are the odds that's how it always was? How she lavished Gale of Waterdeep with effusive praise when he was obedient, built up his confidence and the very persona...but any time he displeased her, hit him with the Dekarios rod--a blunt reminder of his humanity, of the mere mortal man beneath the myth. Beneath her. Where he would always be.

No wonder he cringes away from it like a beaten dog.

Of course this is all conjecture on my part. Just a thing I noticed. Regardless, in case I haven't said it recently... fuck Mystra.

so, i always play no orb detonation and no crown retrieval when it comes to gale, which means this post may not align with everyone’s headcanons or views. that being said…

you know what i love about gale? he is devoted. driven. dedicated, once he sets his mind on something. he is stubborn, firm, unwavering, but he is also considerate, accommodating, respectful. he is devoted - but not blindly so.

now i know this seems like an incorrect statement, but hear me out. the gale we meet at the beginning of the game is not who he truly is. we see gale of waterdeep - renowned wizard, a man who finds poetry in the smallest things, but still a shadow of a goddess. he chases after forgiveness, and he does so blindly, because he is seeking forgiveness for something that, to him, is a fault in the foundation of his character. he wants forgiveness for being ambitious, for wanting to please - and in doing so, he risks even greater follies. because for him, who he is does not necessarily matter - it’s who he can be for mystra.

but then he meets tav/durge. tav, who has a stubbornness that rivals gale’s own. tav, whose outlook is not stained red by the ache of a lost love. tav, who sees ‘gale of waterdeep’ and wants to know who he truly is.

and gale - steadfast, ambitious, painfully loyal gale - listens. he sheds the costume that comes with ‘of waterdeep’. he shows tav who he really is - gale dekarios.

he is dedicated. driven. devoted. but once he experiences mutual love - actual love, not the convoluted manipulation from a goddess - he realizes that ambition is not something that is worth dying for. his mistakes are not something that defines him but rather something from which he can learn.

he learns what it means to be his own person, outside of mystra’s shadow. he learns how to hold himself to achievable standards instead of the unobtainable divinity of a goddess.

he learns what it means to love unconditionally.

he learns how it feels to always have somebody waiting at home for him.

he learns what it means to matter. not just to tav, but to himself.
