Counter headcanon from the one time I accidentally projected too hard while drawing Dean:

Dean smokes but he hates it. He fucking hates it. It's not his bad habit, it's his dad's and he took it up willingly for the approval. But he doesn't want to be his dad anymore. The first time he smoked he took it in and thought he was going to suffocate. But his dad looked at him like he was finally a man and that made it worth it. But he doesn't need his approval anymore. After John died he tried to quit but he couldn't shake it. John's gone and he doesn't have to be daddy's little soldier anymore but its comfortable and it hurts at the same time and he keeps doing it. When Cas resurrects him he comes back without the craving. If someone offers him a smoke socially he won't turn it down. It still hurts. He can't say no.

I like to think the reason why Dean doesn't smoke is because he legitimately just can't. Like he tried. He tried over and over, but he just had no idea how it worked or how to inhale it properly. The nicotine does jackshit to stop the pain in his lungs and the coughing, so he overcompensates by drinking harder

Meanwhile, Cas could probably inhale smoke from the Impala's tailpipe and become a chainsmoker for the wrong type of smoke
