really need more people to talk about the classism of forcing our country/southern accents. the idea that having an Ozarkian or Appalachian accent makes someone less educated is absurd. these cultures are dying because of assimilationism. i will always lay my country ass hick talk on thick as rebellion to the education system and professional world who told me i couldn’t be smart if i talked like that. fuck y’all and your bull shit classism (and racism because that’s a big part of it too). I don’t need to sound white midwestern middle class to be educated. i’m a fucking scholar and i drop my Gs off the end of words. i read marx and shakespeare and say oil like ole and ask for sweet tea with every meal. i’m so mad about this.

to all my southerners out there who were forced to lose your accent in school, please purposefully use it again. make people uncomfortable. force them to deal with your presence. fight back this bullshit.

and this goes for ALL accents, whether southern or deep north or from having a different native language than English. do not let assimilation destroy these important cultural heritage markers.

make people work to hear you. we are worth it.
