Kindling for the fire

This week has been an exciting one for my little studio. After a lot of consideration and months of second guessing I decide to use some of the money I generously received as a graduation gift almost a year ago to buy an Epson Film Scanner. Although nerve wracking, it was inspiring to invest in a piece of equipment that will allow more freedom in my studio.

My goal is to one day have a studio equipped to support my pursuits in various artistic mediums. With an extremely small budget for equipment and materials, my studio will continue to grow slowly. I have a pretty good idea of what I want my studio to look like and have been slowly adding pieces that are making it more of a reality. Things that allow me to continue to pursue art.

Last Wednesday after uploading my weekly post to WordPress I headed to my alternative process class forgetting something very important. That was the day we had a guest photographer coming to show us a demo of wet plate collodion. It was exactly the type of motivational 4 hours this jaded photographer needed.

We met the amazing Michael Kolster on the roof of a parking garage where he had his darkroom and camera set up for us. A teacher himself, he quickly put all of us nervous students at ease by encouraging us to walk around and look inside of his mobile darkroom. The more I talked with this guy the more I was impressed with his easy laid back approach to life and passion for photography.

In 2010 I started my photography degree at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. I had no idea what I was doing but was beyond excited to learn. I went above and beyond what I needed to do to learn the ins and outs of my new camera. I did my best to understand aperture and shutter settings despite being unable to comprehend that the bigger the number the smaller the aperture and the less light that will be let in. (Trust me, when its written on paper in graph style it makes absolutely no sense. ) I breezed through my first 11 weeks learning as much as I could and aware that I still had a lot to learn.

Making the choice to refrain from activities in which others participate–sex, drugs, drinking, et cetera–is a choice that has somehow become shameful, and I don’t get it. How can you say we need to make it okay for women to express themselves sexually and then turn the tables and hate on those who don’t? Here’s what it comes down to: if a man pushes a woman into considering sex, it’s wrong, but if a woman does it, she’s “helping”. NO. You don’t have to be a male to harass a woman about her sexual choices. Women can harass women, men can harass men, women can harass men, and it all needs to stop. We have to start supporting each other, no matter our choices. You cannot defend one and not the other. You cannot say one is right and the other is wrong. You cannot pretend to understand why a woman makes the choices she does. You cannot begin to know her whole story.
