Chuuya (to himself): Right, just tell him that you think it's time you overcame your differences and started spending time together again without sounding desperately pathetic.

Chuuya: Dazai?

Dazai: Yeah?

Chuuya: I miss you so much it hurts sometimes.

Chuuya (to himself): Shit

Dazai: ...

Dazai: Right, I'm going to need you to never say that again.

Chuuya: Agreed.

A week later

Dazai: Chuuya? Have you seen my pen?

Chuuya: No.

Dazai: Damn... It's just I really like that pen... And I miss it so much it hurts sometimes.

Chuuya: ...

Two weeks later

Dazai: Man, I really wish they hadn't shut down that old noodle shop we used to go to.

Chuuya: Oh yeah, same I -

Dazai: It's just I miss it so much it hurts sometimes.

Chuuya: For the love of god

Later that night, Chuuya and Dazai stumbling home drunk

Dazai: I feel the same, you know.

Chuuya: Hm?

Dazai: I miss you so much it hurts sometimes.

Chuuya: Dazai if you're fucking with me again -

Dazai: It hurts when I see you laughing with your friends over inside jokes I don't get anymore. It hurts when I see you sat on the other side of the table during meetings, Tachihara in the spot next to you that used to be mine. It hurts when I wake up in the middle of the night reaching out for you only to realise you haven't been there in years.

Chuuya: Dazai...

Dazai: And what hurts the most is that I know this is for the best. Because no matter how much missing me may hurt, you and I both know that I only hurt you more when we were together.

Chuuya: Would that be such an issue?

Dazai (smiling softly): Yeah. It really would.

soukoku scratches such a particular itch in my mind. especially when they interact - two kids who grew up too fast. who indulge in their youth so much more around one another. who laugh and snark and act like teenagers when they're constantly playing twice their age. they bicker and play around with each other, unlike anyone else. they bring out each other's youth and joy, anxieties, their humanity. they mean everything to me.

Do you ever stop and think of how Chuuya's life before the PM was one of constant violence and brutality?

And how he might have been touch-averse early on in his life for how every touch he's known was vicious and barbaric?

Do you ever think about how this might be Chuuya's first experience of actual, gentle touch since he'd been picked up by the sheep??

Do you ever consider that the reason he looks so shocked aside from his ability getting swept away, is because this isn't a chokehold or a preparation to attack, but a mere hold?

Do you ever think about how No Longer Human might have taught him that gentle touch can be just as powerful as violent ones??

Oh, by the way,

Do you ever stop and consider that the reason Chuuya was reeling every time him and Dazai closed proximity isn't only because he doesn't stand Dazai but also because he absolutely hates the contact?

Do you ever think of how Dazai might have known how much Chuuya wasn't used to gentle touch and tormented him by doing shit like this just so he can see Chuuya's visceral reactions every time?

Do you ever imagine Chuuya trying to get used to gentle touch and even try to initiate some as payback?

And how he's come to appreciate and embrace it by doing so?

thinking about how soukoku is inherently so romantic by design what do you mean there's a character can only be brought back from the brink of destruction by human touch... what do you mean there's only one person in the entire world who can.... who can... do that....

I just want to kindly urge you to veer away from calling people names and criticizing them so harshly for having differing opinions. We all interpret this relationship differently and that simply means we each see their dynamic in a unique light.

Please don't go around reblogging posts that go out of their way to insult everyone who engages and agrees with it. There was a better way to articulate this, and it's unfortunate you couldn't find it.

i think we as a fandom need to write more flustered dazai. like dont get me wrong i love flustered chuuya it is so very canon, BUT!! DAZAI IS *WHIPPED* FOR CHUUYA, AND I THINK HE DESERVES TO BE FLUSTERED!!!!!

hc that Dazai made a point of calling Chuuya small when they met because Dazai was used to being the small one.

like, finally there was someone shorter than him. because let’s be real, Dazai was barely taller than Chuuya in Fifteen.

i think people forget how small Dazai was too— not just in height, but also in weight. He was underweight in Dark Era, but in Fifteen & even at present he's barely within the healthy weight range for his height. he was constantly described as a twig in Fifteen, and almost every time he's introduced in the light novels he's called lanky, slender, etc.

its kinda funny how despite all the speculation and worries about fyodor, my main takeaway from chapter 114 is that soukoku is even cuter than i originally thought, and that's saying something because I already found them to be absolutely adorable instead of the angsty type

dazai being comfy around chuuya and using him as a sounding board for ideas and chuuya subtly trying to make dazai calm down because dazai worrying is making him worry too

its just really nice to see more about how they act around each other, ya know?
