The Soul Star Review: The 2nd Annual DDFW Master of the Mic Competition.

On Friday, January 13th (yep, Friday the 13th) 2017, something epic happened.  And nope, nothing scary!  The 2nd Annual DDFW MOTM (Master of the Mic) Competition was awesome!  (DDFW stands for Denton and Dallas/Fort Worth, btw.)  Picture it, a Deep Ellum club on a booming Friday night filled with all sorts of artistic and eclectic personalities.  Not to mention the guest judge panel including legend The D.O.C.   And who else? Lil Flip.  Hadn’t seen him in a minute! I was like, “yo, he still out here?  I guess so!”  

All of the contestants put so much effort into their performances.  The talent was there and certainly the stage presence.  I honestly felt like I was at a high profile concert and a laid back chill spot at the same time.  J Catalyst was crowned the winner, but in my opinion, they were all winners!  

Hats off to the lovely Callie Dee of Red Empire for putting on such an amazing event.  I’m definitely looking forward to next year and I have a few emcees in mind for the line up.  If you’re an aspiring emcee, you definitely want to compete next year.

The Soul Star Review | Comedy Show @ One Love Lounge Greetings to all of you who read and follow this blog. We really appreciate your continued support! Keep in mind that when I review an event, it's going to be the truth as I see it. It's nothing personal, just what it is. I owe it to my readers to be honest and to keep it real. So they'll have an idea of what to expect should they want to check it out for themselves. That being said, let's get into my review, shall we? The Show | Friday night, I had the pleasure of attending one of the FUNNIEST comedy shows I've ever attended. Now, for those of you all who don't know this about me, I keep it REAL. One hunnit. This may hurt or help...just depends on the situation. lol. But seriously, every single comedian was HILARIOUS. I've been to comedy shows where the bar was the highlight of the evening because the comedians were sub par. However, host comedian Lamar Jones does it again with another stellar line up! Kelanna Spiller, Comedian Q, and headliner Shaun Jones did more than just make lemonade w/ the lemons. They made a frozen lemonade margarita! What do I mean when I mention lemons? The Venue | The fact that there was only about 15 of us there to see the show. This didn't reflect poorly on the comedians, though. That falls on the owner for not properly advertising the event. The wings were good, though. I can definitely say that. And at least they were all DONE, which is more than I can say for my experience at Heroes down on Greenville Aveneu. The waitress Giselle was nice, just seemed a little confused at times. But hey, maybe she's new. Now this venue is definitely worth looking at if you are someone that puts on events. Just know that you're probably going to be solely responsible for your own promotions. Verdict? I'm giving this event a B+. I don't care which venue you find Lamar Jones' name attached to--just know that the show will be well worth your time and money. Each comedian is carefully selected...ie, he's only picking the good ones. So big ups to Lamar Jones and his comedy line up. I'll definitely attend more of his shows in the future! Like this review? The Soul Star Review | Giant Entertainment’s Holiday Revelry

Okay, so like many of us out here on the grind, I usually have a hard time making room in my schedule for leisurely activities.  In truth, I had received the invitation to The Holiday Revelry some weeks in advance, but December has been a CRAZY month.  Not to mention, I HADN’T been in the “Holiday Spirit.”  Like at all!  Fortunately, after some much needed rest, I found myself in front of my computer only to receive a Facebook reminder about the event.  So I began thinking that I should purchase tickets and just GO!  So, for only $12 plus tax, I DID!  Because what I knew, was that Cherish Love has an amazing voice and somehow, I knew that I would be surrounded by good people.  AND they used the term REVELRY!!!  That alone gets my vote!  What can I say?  I’m a sucker for creativity!!!  I get to South Side on Lamar in Dallas, TX (my first time going) and I’m greeted by a few courteous staff members.  I get to the gallery where the show was to begin and I saw mixing and mingling of all sorts of people ready to enjoy the upcoming show.  There were delicious light bites along w/ exceptional bartenders, may I add!!!  

So after mingling with some pretty awesome strangers, it’s time to begin!  Liz Mikel (Actress/Vocalist) is a powerhouse with her breathtaking fashionable fro!  She was an absolute fabulous host who ushered in the energy for the evening. So at this time, ya’ll know I’m all ears cuz great style always gets my attention.  Without further ado, it’s time for Cherish Love and Djore to perform!  I was just hoping that Djore’s jacket didn’t steal the show from him as it was very eye catching.  But no way!  Djore tore it up and so did Cherish!  I mean, I was completely blown away by such style, sophistication, and professional voices.  Nat King Cole, Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, you name it!!! <-----Pun ALL THE WAY intended!!!---<  And it was so refreshing to hear real Jazz for the first time in a long time.  There was such a feeling of happiness and joy that filled the room, it was magical.  To top it all off, we learn that Giant Entertainment has found a permanent new home and we here at FYMRadio can’t wait to see what unfolds next for them.  Because when it comes to hustle, they understand that it takes an entire team to make it all happen.  But on this, I won’t go into detail.  I’d much rather you go and see for yourself.

Overall, I am honored to give The Holiday Revelry an A+ rating!  These people really know how to put on a masterful production.  So when you see Giant Entertainment’s events in the future, I strongly encourage all of my readers to take advantage of those opportunities.  It will be well worth your time and your money.  You’ll forget about what has been troubling you and run away with the magic of the evening.
