New Genre Creation: Remember, not so long ago, when music had points of reference called “genres” or categories, where we placed a song in a traditional set of conventions? I have found that working inside those guidelines is actually difficult… especially when you mix pop electronic, soul, acoustic country and David Bowie style vocals. I keep being reminded that no matter what country you are in, no matter the native language or how remote the locale… everyone on this planet understands music. Finding the Rhythm: I am on a film set now, and had a few moments to share. I have been asked a few times to describe a writing technique I use… where I create imagery in my mind, or I think about real experiences, and simply write exactly what I see. It’s the details in plain form that help the reader dive into the narrative. You create a baseline description, then build the imagery through the words to provide a pathway for the reader to follow. For example: Playing a Guitar - Simple right? But start with the strum… and then describe the feel of the strings vibrating under your fingertips. Can you create the imagery for a sound? Is it like a wave? How does it move and what does it feel like? The lights come up, and you are watching it all in slow motion. You feel the pick in your fingers, and you see the world is watching you… waiting for that rhythm. To the crowd, you magically appear on the stage. You can hear and feel the crowd chanting. As you inhale, the glossy finish of the guitar flashes under your eyes. You slide your fingers into place, you raise your arm… then brush perfectly across each string, releasing a stair-step of chords and blending together in harmony. Your song begins. You can see the little red light flashing on the microphone, and you gently lean toward the crowd. I would say… slow down (freeze frame) the imagery and look from top to bottom, catching the details in action. Then simply write them down. 1. Guitar; 2. Strings; 3. The Lights; 4. The Crowd; etc… then describe these parts in detail, and place them in the correct order as they happen. Finally, expand on these actions to finalize a story, and bring the descriptions of the experience together. Boom! How to Flip a Surfboard (Hawaiian Style): No paddle, just me and the board! We switch gears from the beach to the pool in our backyard for the afternoons. You can still hear the waves crashing only a few yards away. Here is how it’s done: 1. keep your legs wrapped around the board, 2. flatten out underwater and 3. commit to using your arms to create enough momentum to rise above the waterline. Easy right? The Take-Off and Check In: Hawaii, Maui arrival in fast forward - You board the plane, and realize the huge amount of planning, testing and packing necessary to get to Hawaii. 5hrs later, the ocean reveals the islands… and you can already feel the wind blowing the plane around. We run to the ocean, waves crashing and jump in! We relax at the pool, which is on the beach and take a moment to check out the rocks along the shoreline. Start to Finish: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/workouts-by-muscle-booster/id1446447749 A few of you have reached out for training ideas on a busy schedule. I discovered a few ways to stay in shape while working crazy hours on set, traveling and still getting in what you actually like doing. You can use your phone through the “Muscle Booster” app to get a rhythm, and then make your own workouts really easily with and without weights or a gym. This sounds like a fitness commercial, I know… but after trial and error, your “program” comes to life. This is for men and women, obviously with different goals. This can be the foundational workout (2 times a week) or the whole workout (3 times a week). Compare: 1. Warm up (everyone forgets this part and it’s not stretching) ½ to 1 mile on the treadmill or walking - needs to be at 3.5 or slightly faster to truly warm up. But long steps and get the blood pumping; (10 min) 2. Stretch - go from feet to head / legs, hips, back, shoulders, arms, neck to fingertips; (5 min) 3. Core - choose a core workout either 10, 15 or 18 minutes. You can choose beginner, intermediate or advanced either in the app or online; 4. Next you can choose and focus on a specific area (arms, back, shoulders, legs, supersets,etc…) online or in the app depending on your weekly workout (15-20 min); 5. One last 5 minute cool down on the treadmill and you are done! Most know about nutrition but this app also provides recommendations, recipes and even a calorie counter so you can see it all in one spot. No joke… I do this randomly each week (1-3 times) and it’s legit. When I started, I tried it out and then ended up going back to get more workouts. Let me know if this helps! Next workout is on me!
