Puffs of air caress her cheeks as he speaks down to her, at her, warning her of the dangers the wasteland is guaranteed to bring her. Robbed of what she's not sure. Her pipboy is of value, but would the people on the surface know how to use it? Dragged and murdered, of course, that's been established the many times they nearly died by things less vengeful than humans.
He doesn't get it, because she thinks he's never seen it.
The sterile death of it all.
Tumblr media
"Down there you just wait for it. Maybe it's a little safer, sure, but it doesn't stay that way. They don't even tell us there are people like you up here."
Shoulders dropping with defeat, Echo drops her chin and shakes her head, fidgeting with the pipboy on her wrist to disengage it.
"Forget it. Take my place. Go down to the damn vaults for all I care and say it was my dying wish, but I know what's worse."
HE SEES HIS OWN REFLECTION when he looks at her, hypocrisy like a slow-rising steam, threatening to flay at his skin, burn him alive.
He was born there — just as Echo was — a palpable secret about being designed within a box, pushed and flattened into a mold the shape of a scientist. It was all they told him, all they wanted him to be, writing rules and logic and the Vulcan way invisibly into his skin, his DNA.
But looking like them, talking like them did nothing. For all the books and numbers and finite mathematics he could assimilate in a vault of steel, he never belonged to them.
Or with them.
But down there? You’re nothing.
—abomination.
He didn’t know any different until his mother couldn’t take it anymore. She was wrong about the vault. Then she was wrong about the wasteland, too.
Tumblr media
“ There is nothing civil, here. ” He intones in her face, inches, centimeters from the fire in her eyes. Burn, then. Take me with you, his own say, as Spock’s hands clench into fists, “ And you will die in it — dragged and robbed and murdered — like everyone else. How is that any such improvement? ”

"I'm asking you to trust my judgement - to trust me."
Trust. The word nearly makes her bare her teeth. They have grown together in what little time they've had as colleagues -- as crew. His crew, to be exact, ensuring she protects his back just as easily as he protects hers as her captain.
Hers; funny, to think she can own something at all.
He could just as easily demand it -- command it, as her superior, to put her faith in the fact that his insane plan has any validity at all. Her job is to make sure he ends up in that damn chair at the end of this mission, another dicey victory under his belt. Her job has nothing to do with feelings or beliefs but absolutes and violent certainty.
Yet he asks. Of her, he asks for something that isn't tangible, that he cannot hold beyond her word, and she wants to hate him for it.
Echo's hand hasn't loosened its grip on his bicep trying to keep him close to her, safe -- if anything it tightens, vice-like with a hint of worry. Should she give into the choice of fully trusting James Kirk without the safety net of a back-up plan, then his presence will linger in the back of her skull.
Her hand relaxes until it falls, dissolving the tether. Resignation.
Tumblr media
"...just don't go where I can't follow," is all she replies.

"Why couldn't you trust me?" - College AU!
Yes, why? Chewing on the inside of her cheek, she sits with him at their usual spot. To think they've evolved to even having a usual spot at all -- and she's even happy to sit on the hood of his car overlooking the suffocating city below -- ought to be madness.
Yet somehow Sulu is the calm, before and after all the storms.
"That's actually the problem," she states, turning a cheek to look him in the eye. "I do. Trust you, I mean, but... I had to do it on my own."
Tumblr media
Right some wrongs, fudge a few numbers, so he wasn't the only one pulling his weight anymore in this never-ending partner project.
"If I asked for your help, then you'd just be doing more of the same shit you've been doing. I had to do some of the work on my own." After a beat, she shrugs a shoulder. "I don't think I did half bad, if you really want my humble honest opinion."

"What's the matter? You do trust me, don't you?"
"I'm asking you to trust my judgement - to trust me."
"Why don't you trust me anymore?"
"Do you know what it's like not to be able to trust your own eyes?"

"You've become awfully trusting for a man wanted by the FBI."
"I don't trust anybody."
"The person to fear the most is the one to whom you gave all your trust."
"You have an honest face."
"I think I can trust you to be fair and honest. Perhaps you haven't been here long enough to be corrupted."
"I can't trust anyone or anything these days."
"I know this doesn’t come naturally to you, but you want my help, which means you need to trust me."
"You must learn to reject trust."
"You always trust me. Big mistake."

"How long are you going to refuse to trust me?"
"Trust me, this is for your own good."

"Is that what you think it is?"
Over his observation, she speaks with shock. Not surprise, no, because this feels on par for her companion to misalign her desires with something so selfish. Then again -- he isn't wrong.
The apron never fit quite right, the shoes a little too big at her wedding day. She faltered in heels. It was one domino after another, and she took it as a fated sign.
"There was nothing civil about that place. It's so easy for you to say, living up here. You have an entire wasteland to pluck away at," she argues, not bothering to back away; not bothering to care.
"But down there? You're nothing. A body to house the next generation that's going to repopulate Earth and magically heal how fucked people made it."
From this proximity she sees the lines of his face, the specks of color in his eyes.
Tumblr media
"It was a cage, Spock. A steel cage, with one way in and one way out. By all means, I'll take you to them if you wanna live in one so goddamn bad."
PRIDE IS NOTHING MORE THAN false courage without long term solutions. What Echo preaches is only a dare, wanting, seething for more; to prove herself when the wasteland delivers more than the simple cruelty of a harsh sun and the ticking of never-ending radiation.
Spock can see it in her eyes, the breadth of light that has never truly been stolen. It burns a heat in his gut, flares and stutters out the ravenous beating of his heart. She knows not death, but violence, not the loss that has been pillaging turning his innards into stone like a poison.
Spock breathes out, bares his teeth. He should not — he cannot — contend with her ignorance any longer.
Why should he?
Why does he keep her here; why does he remain when he has lost sight of whether she is giving or taking from him.
“ You run from boredom, ” he snipes, meeting her where she's come so close to his toes, her breath hot on his face, " Civility. And for what purpose? To feel some sensation of livelihood that you could not achieve as a housewife. Do you wish to be applauded for escaping the mundane? ”
Echo’s motives are selfish. And yet — begrudgingly — the same qualities of those horrendously survivalist in the wasteland.
Tumblr media
“ You care but for yourself. ”

@protectxthem / [ soothe ] sender kisses receiver to stop them from shaking (Uhh Fallout verse)
She had to. That's what she has to keep telling herself, over and over, as she watches the light fall from a stranger's eyes. Echo could have waited for Cooper to arrive, but there was a moment of fight or flight -- and deep down, she knew the stranger pretending they hadn't shown up at their camp on purpose couldn't be trusted.
The vault dweller barely realizes her limbs are shaking as she stares at what she's done, the bounty hunter's voice all but a fishbowl dream to her. Even when he steps in front of her, she doesn't quite hear what he's saying. All she knows is that she's stuck. Stuck with no way out, stuck with the idea that she didn't give someone the benefit--
Silence.
Brow furrowed, Echo only realizes a second too late that something marred touches her lips. Cooper -- everything in her mind blanks when he pulls away, her expression unable to hide her surprise.
"...the hell was that for?"

What has been the biggest mistake you’ve made since you started RPing?
I've been rping for over 20+ years so I've had my fair share of blunders. I think ultimately my greatest mistake is/was not being firm on my own boundaries. I used to keep the peace (ie not blocking people, not having very hard lines I do not cross, etc) only to realize it ruins your own peace.
People are going to do what they want, everyone has favorites even if they say they don't and you're not always going to click and vibe with every mun you follow, so enforcing boundaries and sticking to them for your own enjoyment versus worrying if you'll piss off or send someone else into a tizzy is key.
questions often left unanswered. /

Without naming anyone, have you ever refused/simply avoided another RPer in the fandom because of things you’ve heard others say about them, or because of their popularity? If so, why did you feel the need to?
You can usually figure out someone's personal character through scrolling the first five pages of their rp blog, self-proclaimed popular or otherwise, so yes. I'm lucky, though, because I write a relatively fandom-hopping original character (and female at that) so I fly under the radar of most people I'm avoiding anyway.
