PS5 Controller Patent Design
I know I may possibly be a little late to the party but I would still like to throw my opinion out there on what looks like to be the PS5′s controller based on a patent that was filed in Japan. Remember that everything I talk about below, is based purely on an unconfirmed controller design.
First though, let me just take a moment and say that it seems insane that we are even talking about the PS5. It seems like the PS4 just came out, even though it was really just over six years ago. I guess time flies when you’re having fun. I am kind of resentful to move on from the PS4 because of all the memories I have with it even though I have only had mine for what will be four years this Christmas. I am really hoping that the PS5 is going to be a banger.
It looks like the PS5 controller will be very similar to what we already have with the PS4′s controller. However, there are a few changes. The major difference is that Sony has decided to do away with the light bar, which I’m sure many will appreciate. There were a lot of people complaining that the light bar drained the battery too quick, even with the adjustable settings that allowed people to change the brightness of the light bar. So it looks like Sony listened to their fans on this one. Another difference is that the DualShock 5 (This isn’t the confirmed name of the controller. I’m just going to take a gander and say that will be the name of it, based on past controllers) seems to be slightly bulkier, particularly the grips. The grips are wider and more rounded, compared to the slimmer, more pointy grips of the DualShock 4. Another difference is that there is a new USB-C port on the top of the controller, which will be used for charging (the DualShock 4 had a Micro USB port if you’re wondering). The joysticks also look like they are going to be a bit shorter and closer to the controller. On the bottom of the controller there is a rectangular strip that stretches around to the back of the controller, which I am not exactly sure of the purpose. That could possibly be where the headphone jack is, as I do not see one anywhere else on the controller in images of the design. On both sides of this rectangular strip there is two circles, which could also be ports and have some use to them. Lastly, a minor difference I spotted is that the front of the controller is completely covered by a shell. The two shell pieces fit together at the bottom of the grips.
Personally, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best, I give the controller a 9. I love that they decided to keep the overall design of the DualShock 4 and not make any major changes to the structure. I believe that widening the grips can only give positive results as it allows more room for people to get their hands fully on the controller. Sometimes, I did experience the issue of not being able to get my fingers comfortably around the grips of the controller. In addition, it’ll help the people out there that suffer from sweaty palms while having an intense session of gaming. I also like that they decided to change to the USB-C port. It is designed symmetrically. That means that it can be plugged in from either way and you don’t have to figure out how to plug up the controller in low-lighting situations like we had to do with the PS4 controller. This cable carries a lot more power too, so that means the PS5 controller should be able to charge more quickly and efficiently. My one main critique about the PS5 controller is that the light bar is gone (unpopular opinion, I know). I enjoyed the light bar on the controller as it would change colors sometimes, based on the game that was being played. It could change colors based on a situation that may have been happening. For example, in Grand Theft Auto V, the controller light would be the color of Michael, Franklin, or Trevor’s character color. Michael’s is blue, Franklin’s is green, and Trevor’s is orange. Another cool feature with the light bar is that if you got a wanted level and the police were after you in-game, the controller’s light bar would flash between red and blue. I wish that they would have included the light bar on the DualShock 5, but given people the option to turn it off. That would please the people who are a fan of it and the people that didn’t like it and said that it drained the battery. I turned the brightness of the light bar on DualShock 4, to dim, to preserve the battery. I will say that the light bar definitely makes a difference with the battery, but if you turn the brightness down, I think it is okay to have.
So that is what I have to say on the PS5′s controller design. If you want to see more angles of the controller’s design than what I have below, visit the link I have attached, where The Verge have a slideshow with more images.

About Me
I thought I would introduce myself for my first post, before jumping into the nitty gritty of my brain about what I love the most...video games.
My name is Neil. I am 15 years old and currently still in high school. I have two pets. One of them is a dog named Bella and the other is a goldfish named Zed. I am currently planning on pursuing a career in gaming journalism. Starting in first grade, I always said that I wanted to be a meteorologist and I stayed true to that until the last few months when I decided that I would most likely be better off pursuing a career with something that is related to sports or video games since I am constantly keeping up with these things.
Speaking of sports, my favorite teams are the Washington Redskins, Miami Heat, and North Carolina Tar Heels. However, for this blog, I am going to keep it to video games since I am able to write about these anytime of the year, whereas sports can be a little difficult to talk about in the offseason, at times. Don’t be surprised if you see a few references to something in sports though.
So back to video games. I have a passion that runs extremely deep for them. I have been playing them since I was about 6 years old. My favorite video game of all time, of the ones that I have played, is Red Dead Redemption 2. It is nearly a tie with Red Dead Redemption (2010) because I loved John Marston so much and I played the online a lot too. My second favorite game is probably Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, on the PS2. This is one of the very first games that I remember playing.
Anyways, I think that is a good bit of info about me for now. Better save some of this for my blogs that I will be writing. I will try to write at least 2 per week but I am usually pretty busy Monday-Friday, dealing with schoolwork.
