hello. :)
This is for my lovely König fanfic writers.
I’ve noticed some common mistakes with German pet names, so I would love to help you out and clear up some things (as being German myself).
Disclaimer: I have not studied the German language and don’t know all the grammar rules myself. It is simply my native language and I’m trying my best to put my basic knowledge into words.
Let’s start with "love". We all adore and melt upon hearing/reading it. In most cases, it is translated as "liebe", which isn’t entirely wrong. "Love" in German is indeed "Liebe", but it is not used in that particular case. It merely is the word for the feeling "love" itself. The correct way to translate "love" in terms of a pet name, would be:
"Liebes" - (feminine)
"meine Liebe" - "my love" (feminine)
"mein Lieber" - "my love" (masculine)
"Geliebte" - (feminine) most commonly used in marriage
"Geliebter" - (masculine)
Remember that in German, a noun's first letter is always written in capital.
Another thing to remember, is the possessive pronoun "mein" - "my". As you probably know, nouns have genders in the German language. Therefore, the pronoun adapts to its noun and changes in gender. Although not in every case. (Don’t ask me why. This language is getting on my nerves as well.)
"mein" - (masculine)
"meine" - (feminine)
Which concludes in "my love" changing, based on the referred person. Use "mein Lieber", when talking to/about a man and "meine Liebe" with a woman. Unfortunately, we don’t have a version for gender neutral people.
Other examples, in which the pronoun doesn’t change, no matter if you’re referring to a man or woman:
"mein Schatz" - "my sweetheart" (neutral)
"mein Engel" - "my angel" (neutral)
Other common pet names:
"Liebling" - "darling" (neutral)
"Maus" - "babe" (feminine)
"Schatz" - "babe" (neutral)
"Süßer" - "babe" (masculine)
"Süße" - "babe" (feminine)
"Liebster" - "beloved" (masculine)
"Liebste" - "beloved" (feminine)
I hope this was helpful and feel free to contact me, if you have any questions.
Lots of love!
