i think a LOT of the Clint hate stems from the fact that socially awkward characters are so often played up as being cute and quirky. then, people who are socially awkward themselves and try to make it something to be proud of instead of trying to improve their social skills can't stand being reminded that it's called being "awkward" for a reason. it's not cute and charming in real life, it's uncomfortable!

Clint is a good representation of actual sad, lonely outcasts, and i will die on this hill. people are so quick to see "awkward, self-conscious lonely adult man with poor social skills" and jump to "incel", when that's a completely separate thing. Clint is harmless, he's just depressed and inept. he's one of those people who seriously needs a friend to call him out when he says something dumb.
