The horse customization seems like such a cool hobby!!! I’m going to have to start looking more into it

They have fun! Since people seem to find the fantasy ones are scratching a particular itch, I nabbed a few highly placed entries from Breyerfest competitions;

Third place in Breyerfest Best Customs 2024 (link to artist blog)

First place in the same competition was this hilarious pudgy vampire-pony, depicted in the act of bursting out of a structure:

And second was this crazy … rocking-horsefly? Fabulous.

It isn’t a customised horse, but quick respect to the winner of the 2024 Breyerfest Excellence in Tack Making class. This is an unaltered Breyer horse model, used to demonstrate mastery of handmade miniature tack. (Working miniature buckles are considered basic at this level; enjoy the CHAIN MAIL.)

I’m personally fond of the Performance categories, which depict horse-and-rider “in the act” of something. Here’s a lovely horse archer who won in 2024.

The 2025 Breyerfest just happened; here’s the 2025 winner and second place in Best Fantasy Customs. I love the sheer class of the monochrome unicorn.

I like the interactions in this entry that won the 2023 Best Custom, a mama winged horse and her babies from Storm and Steel Studio:

So yeah, they’re a fun little art form with an ambitious community. And despite having a long history (I mentioned the thriving zine culture of the 1980s, but didn’t mention that a lot of very early websites linked in with Breyer collection! The 2001-founded website Identify Your Breyer outlasted its founder, who died of cancer in 2021, but is still exactly the same, updated constantly and maintained by other hobbyists) and despite being highly skilled in talents that directly intersect with nerd spheres of influence (I love seeing wargaming/Warhammer/model train/D&D/kitbashing Boys crash into horsegirl painting tutorials and stumble out, muttering vaguely about adding horses to their next diorama) well, despite all that, Artsy Horsegirls Who Touch Grass are still oddly obscure to nerds. It’s only recently that really good video-influencers are breaking containment. And the general reaction seems to be a very charming: “goodness, we had no idea.”
