My exhibition idea
Following on from looking into the Venice biennale, we as a group were asked to work in pairs or alone to create an ambitious proposal for a social project or exhibition. This had to be related to one or more of a range of themes consisting in; nationalism, identity, boarders and belonging. As money was no object within this task I chose to base my proposal around the idea of belonging.
In my opinion everyone belongs somewhere in the world. Although for some people it is a lot harder to find where they belong than it is for others. You can be in a room full of people you love and love you but still not feel like you belong there or are even wanted. Anything can happen in someone life that can affect the way in which they feel that they belong somewhere. I have decided to propose a idea where an exhibition is held within an abandoned warehouse in various locations across the UK. Within this different scenes are held for different locations in which people feel they belong. For this exhibition people can bring along something to add to the settings to make there place on which they feel the belong within and change the way in which the exhibition looks and the impact it could have on future viewers. For this I feel I would use both established artists and new emerging artists to put this exhibition together in order to help people make there mark on the world.

During a Monday morning session we was shown photographs of the 57th biennale. We as a group had a discussion about what the biennale was and what could be found there. I found this very interesting as I feel that this is a very different and unique way of being people within the art community together from all over the World. People from all over the world go to visit the many pavilions in which the art is displayed within in many different ways. There is no limit of what art can be found as this event holds work from different cultures and religions from across the globe. Personally I loved that this event allows members of the public to interact and change different pieces of work. I love the idea that anyone can add there own personal touch to a piece and make an impact which changes the piece to how it would have been seen before it was installed within the pavilions.

Infographics is when both information and images are combined in order to give an message. It is commonly used in order to send an important message to the audience. A clear example of this is on cigarette and tobacco packets. Infographics are used for this in order to ensure that members of the public are aware of the dangers of smoking and also to put people of smoking to begin with. I have decided to create my infographic designs based around the idea of smoking as many members of my family smoke so it is something that I can relate to in many ways. Above are of two different designs that I have created for the stop smoking infographic. I have used different types of text within these two designs to try and create different impacts for the audience.

Another exhibition that we were asked to look at was was one by the artist Clive Barker. The exhibition entitled Clive Barker: pop art sculpture was one that we as a group looked at on the same day as the Micheal Lyons exhibition. This was very different work as although it was made using similar materials, there is a completely different finish to the work.

As part of this module, we have had to too take various trip to our local art gallery in order to gather so primary research on artists that are relevant to the theme of ‘identity’. Micheal Lyons was one of the artists that had an exhibition open at our time of visit. This was entitled- Micheal Lyons: full circle. As an artist he uses many different materials to create his work. As he is a sculptor, he creates his work with materials such as Steel, bronze, plaster, wax and clay. Some of the work that was on display didn’t interest me very much as although I am a fan of working with clay and ceramics, working with steel and bronze is not something that I feel I would enjoy doing. I did enjoy drawing one of the pieces that was on display within the gallery space as it was very unusual and I feel that the unique design got my attention very quickly.

Following on from the bob and Roberta research I decided to create a placard using his style and his idea of talking about something that is important. I can up with a range of different idea but ultimately I decided to use mental health as my topic. I chose this as I know many people affected with mental health issues and I feel that it is something that people generally fear and I wanted to break that stigma. I decided that the use of colour within this is very Important so I decided that the main reasons about the poster should be in black and a different font to the rest of the board. In this case the words ‘mental and ‘not’ are in bold as I feel that these are the most important.

Bob and Roberta Smith is another artist that uses text to create new and In some ways controversial pieces of work. He creates art in the form of placards and bases them around things that are within the media and are prominent in the news. I have used this artist as inspiration in order to create my own placard.

Within the identity project we have come to a stage in which we have started to look at how text is used within artwork. Barbara Kruger is an example of an artist in which uses text in her work. She as an artist typically uses very little colour. In cases where she does this is only to have an impact on her work. This is shown within the piece that is show on the left above. She uses very topical subjects within her work in order to get people talking and create an impact on the audience.

Composition
During a Monday morning seminar we as a group had a session about how important composition is in the process of photography. We learned how important it is to focus on the position in which a photograph is taken and learned some basic rules that should be followed in order to ensure you get the prefect photo. These rules consist of; rule of thirds, strong lines, composition for depth and looking space.
The rule of thirds is a process that is used in many different things you see everyday without knowning. This is a process that consists of dividing an image into nine equal parts. This is used in order to ensure that the main focus of the image is in a dominant place. For example with the bbc, the logo is directly in the middle of the screen therefore making the main focus. Strong lines are used in order to give the viewer something to follow. This is important as it ensures that it gains the viewers attention. Composition for depth is the process of ensuring that the main subject is larger than the background. This could also be when the use of repetition is used in order to emphasise the scale of the piece. Looking space is a very important process that is used especially for television. This is so that the space doesn’t looked cramped and everything is shown in the image that is meant to.

Writing within art
There are many different ways in which writing can be used within art. Many artists use sketchbooks and portfolios in order the create designs and take notes in the process of making a new piece. Blogging is another way in which artists write and explain the ideas and processes when it comes to creating new pieces of work. This format allows the artist to gather opinions of others and learn ways in which they can improve. This in my opinion could be better for working artists as they can find out what there fans want from them and find out how they are making an impact.
One place in which I feel too much information can be inappropriate is within an art gallery. I feel that in a gallery the viewer should be able to make there own opinion of the work and try and decide themselves what they think it could mean. A brief description is helpful but too much information about the reasons behind creating the piece could have a huge impact on how the viewer sees the piece.

Continuing with the mapping theme I created two other different pieces based on this idea of identity in journeys. The piece on the left is one in which I created using graphite shavings and smudging them into the page to create a dark background. I then uses an eraser to remove this in some places to create a small map of my local area. The piece on the left was created using a map that I found at home. I used a biro to create a self portrait within the map leaving the streets within the piece. This was to show that different journeys can have an effect on where you go in life.

Mapping is another important aspect of identity. Where you live and places you go are an important part of what makes you. As a group we created a piece where we all had our own space on a large spread where we were asked to create a visual drawing of our journey that we take into university. For this I did a quite detailed map of the area in which I live. I did this as this is an area in which I have spent most of my life and I felt that this was the easiest part of my journey to map. After I draw so far up of my journey I decided to change the amount of detail that I was adding to the map as I didn’t know much past a specific point due to not always paying attention to my surroundings. This task has made me realise that I should pay more attention when I am out and about and realise that it should appreciate the whole journey and not just pay attention to what I know.

For this module I have been required to create a range of collages based around the theme of identity. The college shown above was one in which I created around the idea of emotions. I used wallpaper within this piece to show how something so simple can create a range of different feelings such as happiness and sadness. The wallpaper that I have used in this piece is something that is very important to me as I had both happy and sad memories to me.

During welcome week on the foundation year course we undertook a variety of different tasks. During this week we went on a trip to the local art gallery. We were asked as a group to go and have a look around the gallery and find pieces of work that we found both interesting and inspiring. I have selected a few pieces of work that I found within the gallery that I found both interesting in the plan behind them and through the use of materials that have been used in order to create the piece. I have also found pieces that I also liked the look of as well as the way in which it has been displayed. The two pieces that I feel are my favourite after i had finished looking around the gallery are both created out of very unconventional art materials. These are both the pieces entitled ‘seed plan’ and ‘the best of times’. I liked the piece entitled ‘seed plan’; both for the artists meaning behind creating the work as well as the detail used into creating the piece. The piece was made in celebration of the lift on the one child policy in China, therefore it is based on the idea of growth. The piece entitled ‘the best of times’ is based on changes through times and in my opinion I feel that as time progresses everything will always change and I feel artwork is the best way in which to capture time as it changes.
