"I will," I cried with an oath. "I'll lend you a hand as often as you like! What does it matter now? I've been in it once. I'll be in it again. I've gone to the devil anyhow. I can't go back, and wouldn't if I could. Nothing matters another rap! When you want me, I'm your man!"

The naming conventions for Montessori materials make them sound like really low-effort Saw traps. The Metal Insets. The Lacing Frame. The Sound Boxes. Like if Jigsaw was trying to wean himself off of murder but still couldn't give up puzzle abductions.

One of the funniest little moment in Sinners is when Pearline says Sammie seems like a nice young man, and he responds with “I ain’t always nice. Ain't that young either” and he looks like this –

[ID: A screenshot of a Tumblr post with the username cut off: "while im at it pregnancy isnt body horror either. a fetus is not a parasite like im sorry that its being forced on so many people but its just a medical condition and yes medical conditions can be scary but they are NOT HORROR". The post is reblogged by adelesbian: "Cancer isn't body horror. Necrotic tissue isn't body horror. Scar tissue isn't body horror. nothing the human body can do is horror. Like you can use horror to explore those feelings (Loss of control, loss of autonomy, etc) those conditions provoke but THEY are not Horror and You have got to remember that your immediate gut reaction of recoil is often lying to you and you have got to get over that". END ID]
I think that there's a very meaningful criticism to be made wrt body horror and how it often can handle disability or disfigurement in an extremely reactionary and prejudiced fashion but I feel like you've lost the plot if you can sincerely say shit like "cancer isn't body horror" like I dont know I think its pretty scary to have cancer. I dont feel like we need to defend the role of cancer as a natural process of the body. Like that's not comparable to people acting like a cleft lip or a guy in a wheelchair are spooky. Pregnancy is pretty scary too like even before the question of forced birth and other such social violence surrounding it are involved. I think you're sort of dancing around the fact that the human body does frightening things to us all the time and the question of what is "natural" should in of itself be actively questioned because sometimes "natural" things are... bad!
#it's almost as if nuance exists#to be clear#i have two benign tumors (that i know of) in my body#cancer/tumors are the ultimate body horror

Very late to the party, but that MA thesis on Jonathan and Mina's gender presentation that circulated on Tumblr some time ago (Jonathan, Mina, and the Holiest Love: Intimations of a virtuous queerness in Dracula (1897) by Viktor Karlsen Hessen) really is so, so good. From a deep dive into Jonathan as a Gothic heroine, complete with step-by-step comparisons with an actual Ann Radcliffe's heroine as well as the other female characters he's paralleled with in the text - Scheherazade and Lenore - to an exploration of how Mina's masculine traits are treated as positive throughout the novel and survive into the ending. Also, the author is very careful and rational when talking about Stoker's personal views and sexuality, neither jumping to conclusions based on a few facts nor disregarding those facts at all.
Also, there's a section comparing Mina to other female characters in Gothic literature who do not act in accordance with the Victorian gender norms but are punished for that - Helen Vaughan from The Great God Pan and Marjorie Lindon from The Beetle, and I personally am 1) always there for some The Great God Pan talk, 2) always there for dragging The Beetle.

People always have funny headcanons for what Jack was up to during the night with the Boys (tm) but my personal headcanon is that the joy he experienced that night brought around a worse kind of melancholy and self loathing the following week. The lack of recall on the phonograph because it's too personal to talk about. The next time he records and it will be only of Renfield, as if nothing else has changed at all.

[Video Description: A clip from The Simpsons. Flanders tosses a mattress out of a second floor window of the burning Simpson home. In the burning nursery, Flanders drags an unconscious Homer to the window as he says, "Dear Lord, may Your loving hand guide Homer to the mattress square and true!" With an effort he shoves Homer out the window. Homer falls directly onto the mattress, then bounces up and, with a little cry, crashes through a first floor window, back into the house. Flanders stares, then sighs defeatedly, saying "Okay." End Description.]

[ID: Gifs from Detroit: Become Human of Connor and Hank standing on a bridge in the snow. As Connor speaks, a notification shows Hank's approval going up. Connor's face is neutral while Hank looks at him in intense thought. Connor: "I'm whatever you want me to be, Lieutenant. Your partner. Your buddy to drink with. Or just a machine... designed to accomplish a task." END ID]
