alright, finished the second p3 movie like three days ago and i think i've finally had enough time to marinate on it that i can now write my thoughts down
first, that intro. i was definetly not expecting the intro to throw us into that scene like that. i had seen the yukari lovers arcana scene on youtube before, but i hadn't realized it was literally the opening lol. it was fine, pretty funny, but it was also fairly discombobulating to be thrown into it cold.
the junpei mind control scene was cringe-inducing and kinda unnecessary in my opinion. like, give my girl yukari a break okay?? i know she's the bod standard **girl** character in these movies but chill w/ the fan service okay? the fight scene was really good though, loved the collateral damage there.
second, beach stuff. honestly, i was not in the mood for the beach flirting shenanigans after that intro, also i wasn't sure if the transphobic scene that they got rid of in reload was in the movie, so i admittedly skipped past most of it until we got to aigis.
i can definitely see that they were leaning into aikoto w/ this movie, given makoto's reaction to her and the fact that aigis interrupted the shuyuka scene. potentially controversial opinion here as a shuyuka enjoyer, but i didn't mind it actually.
i consider makoto yuki (movie protagonist) to be a very different character from minato arisato (reload protagonist). i really like the aikoto romantic dynamic in the movies. i think makoto's whole thing about being afraid of attachments and losing the people close to him works well w/ aigis. i also hope that because of this shift towards aikoto, they'll leave my girl yukari alone fanservice wise going forward.
third, ken and shinjiro. i enjoyed the changes made to their dynamic and how there was a sense of betrayal from ken to shinji. in the game it felt a lot less complex and more dull, but here it's given the attention it needed to be impactful.
that plotline also works in tandum w/ makoto's fears about SEES disbanding and leaving him w/ nothing.
that said, it definetly threw me off when the timeline of events were so different from the game. which leads me to...
fourth, chidori. i...was not expecting the chidori and junpei stuff to be sidelined this much in this movie. chronologically, the jundori stuff happens before the ken and shinjiro stuff and i don't really like how they handled it.
i don't think it would have thrown things off that badly if they'd done the ken and shinjiro plotline in the third movie instead while dedicating the second to the jundori plotline. we barely got to see her, which is sad because i feel like junpei's arc about needing SEES to feel special could have worked REALLY well alongside makoto's similar feelings.
starting the third movie, i can see that their starting to flesh out the jundori plotiline but still. i would have preferred it in the second movie.
final thought, the art and animation stayed fairly consistent w/ the first so it's still alright.
