Lilith took the gun that lay in the snow, inspecting it she saw several scrapes against the metal.
“Shit,” Lilith’s voice echoed through the forest as she screamed. “Shit shit shit,” she grumbled as she panicked. Her brother was missing, probably dead, and she had no leads and now she would have to report to her parents that the mission failed and Malachi was missing.
Lilith threw the gun over her back, slinging the strap over her shoulder to keep it in place as she began her long trek home.
The journey was quiet, without Malachi there were no stupid jokes or humming of off-pitch tunes to fill the silence. The quiet journey she once begged for was now unsettling and uncomfortable. About a day of travel passed, hopping from cart to cart as she came closer to her home village. She finally found herself walking up the path to her family home. A large mansion-like home that sat empty for most of her childhood other than her parents, locked away in their own offices.
Lilith pushed open the large door and greeted with an empty grand entry hall. She let the door slam shut behind her, the sound echoing through the halls alerting everyone in the house to her presence. She let her body slump against the door as she sank to the ground. She looked like a mess, the bandages around her nose and neck bleeding through, her once tidy dark hair fell out of its bun and draped over her face as her coat and shirt had dried blood staining down from her injuries. Lilith hugged her brother's gun tightly as she broke down in silent tears.
“Malachi, Lilith!” The familiar shouting of her mother’s voice broke Lilith from her thoughts as she looked up to see her mother scampering into the main hall, her face dropping as she saw her daughter slumped against the door holding her son’s gun tightly.
“Lilith?” Her mother’s voice softened as she kneeled in front of the girl, “sweety where's Malachi?”
“I- I don't know,” her voice came out in soft mumbles as she spoke.
“What happened?”
“It was a trap,” Lilith sniffled as she spoke, trying to stop the tears from running down her face.
“What do you mean?” her mother's voice was gentle as her hands lifted the girl's face to look at her, “the client was confirmed, we checked everything.”
“I don't know what happened,” Lilith said, calming herself down as she looked into her mother's soft blue eyes, “it wasn't just one weak vampire- there were four of them, one had to be a noble. He was so strong, mom.” Lilith spoke as she let herself fall forward into her mother's gentle embrace.
“What happened to your brother?”
“He told me to run,” Lilith sobbed into her mother's shoulder, “he said he'd be right behind me- but when I got to the village I waited for so long and he never showed up. When I went to find him all I found was his gun.”
“How were there four? We confirmed the mission details with the client. Did you talk with the client?”
“Mom- everyone was dead, the village was empty.”
Silence took over the conversation which was quickly interrupted by heavy footsteps Lilith recognized as her fathers.
“Kathryn, what is it?” The man's voice boomed through the hall as he saw his daughter crying into his wife's shoulder.
“Aria just returned the other day, yes?” She asked him.
“I’ll go get her.”
“Aria will take care of these injuries while your father and I discuss what we will do. Ok?” Kathryn's voice was soft as she helped Lilith up to her feet, taking the gun that she held so tightly.
It didn't take long for the dark-haired man to run back in followed closely by a shorter brown-haired girl with a concerned look on her face as she saw her sister's appearance. Aria didn't waste any time before she quickly took Lilith’s arms guiding her to the younger girl's room.
“Lilith what happened? You look like shit.” The older one started unwrapping the bandages from around the girl's face and neck.
“I feel like shit,” She responded softly.
The girls sat in silence for a while as Aria tended to the wounds on her younger sister. Before bandaging them tightly so they could heal.
“You'll get some cool scars at least,” Aria hesitated before continuing, “want to tell me what happened?”
“It was an ambush- I was staying back and providing cover fire when I was attacked by the strongest one of the group. He managed to bite and scratch me, Malachi provided cover while I ran away. I thought he would be behind me but… He didn't make it.”
“Oh-”
“He can't be dead though,” Lilith said confidently, “he wouldn't die like that.”
“Lilith,” Aria rested her hand on the smaller girl’s shoulder.
“No- he can't be dead- I'll find him.”
“Keep saying that.”

Malachi charged at the vampire, slashing at him with his short sword as he yelled at him. Lilith fired, hitting the vampire several times catching him off guard as he focused on the sword slashing at his face.
“I must admit, your fighting styles complement each other well,” He said, jumping towards Lilith landing behind her his hand holding her jaw still as his breath fanned over her neck, which was still bleeding from the previous bite.
“Get away from my sister,” Malachi shouted, aiming his gun at the vampire.
The vampire tisked holding her tighter before speaking, “I wouldn't pull that trigger if I were you, you’d hit your dear sister.”
He grumbled as he lowered his gun trying to figure out a plan to attack. The vampire’s dark smile grew wider as his grip tightened around her waist as he pulled her chin upwards revealing the bite on her neck as he gently licked at the blood trickling down and staining the girl's white shirt.
“Your dear sister just tastes delightfull,” he smiled against her neck, “you must understand why I must keep her with me?”
“Shut up,” Malachi grumbled, lunging at the vampire with his sword. The sudden attack made the vampire drop Lilith to the ground as he grunted trying to avoid the boy's reckless attacks. Malachi backed off for a second seeing Lilith slumped against the ground, her hands holding the cut across her face as soft tears spilled from her eyes. His thoughts were conflicted but he had to protect his little sister.
“Lilith scatter!” He shouted firing a shot towards the vampire charging at him and pushing his gun out of the way before any bullets could hit him as he slashed his claws against the boy. Malachi’s screams were sickening as they echoed through the forest.
“Malachi!” Lilith screamed, pushing herself up to her feet as she watched her brother fall to the ground, his blood staining the white snow underneath him.
“Get out of here,” Malachi coughs, “I’ll meet you where we planned.”
Lilith fought in her mind wanting to help her brother but knowing she wouldn't stand any chance against him. She finally pushed herself to run away, her breath labored as the cold air hurt her lungs. She was running as fast as she could, she couldn't hear anyone following her so she slowed down as she approached the small town. Something was off, the streets were empty as the sun began peaking over the horizon. No smoke came out of the chimneys, there was no noise or bustle of horses anywhere.
It was eerily silent.
Lilith went to the first house she saw pushing the door open and it was destroyed; the second house she ran into was the same, and the third, and the fourth.
Every house was destroyed with the faint scent of blood.
“They attacked the town,” the girl mumbled as she searched the empty town, no survivors were left. The only thing left from these people were the now empty and destroyed houses. She pushed open the door to another house seeing it destroyed again she lost all hope.
“Malachi should be meeting me here though,” she let out an exasperated sigh before sitting on the ground and digging through her bag, “then we can report back to Mom and Dad.”
She pulled bandages from her bag and began wrapping her injuries. She hissed at the pain lingering in the bite on her shoulder, it was deep and would definitely leave a scar along with the deep gash across her nose which was dripping blood down her shirt. She moved to bandage the gash, stopping the bleeding before she went back to dig through her bag. She pulled out some flint and steel along with several crumpled-up pieces of paper, throwing the paper into the fireplace that still held some burnt logs. She began striking the flint and steel creating small sparks as she grumbled trying to get a fire to start. After several tries and many profanities, the fire started sending warmth through the room. The small girl relaxed slightly as she felt the warmth flood over her body.
Her body and mind were exhausted but she couldn't find it in herself to fall asleep, it was too dangerous. Malachi along with one of her enemies were out there somewhere she couldn't afford to go to sleep. So instead Lilith sat there watching, waiting, expecting her brother to run in boasting about how he had killed the beast.
But that never happened.
Instead, Lilith waited for hours, till the sun crested the horizon and the fire died out leaving her in the cold with the only warmth coming from her long coat which was stained with black powder and blood.
Lilith waited there for hours, her brother had to return.
There's no way he would die like this.
She finally pushed herself up off the ground before she walked outside, the sun high in the sky nearly blinding her sensitive eyes as she exited the home.
“It must be about noon,” She spoke to herself quietly, “he's probably hurt. Can't make it here.” Her voice was filled with concern as she looked out into the forest she had run from.
She approached the forest carefully, any vampires would have retreated before the sun came up but it still felt dangerous as she entered the forest. She came up to the cabin the vampires had been hiding out in. The only evidence of the fight is the white snow being stained with blood and black powder. Malachi was nowhere in sight of the cabin.
“Malachi,” Lilith shouted through the forest.
No response came back.
“Mal!” her voice became more desperate as she yelled. Still, no response came.
“Mal this isn't funny!” Lilith walked slowly through the trees searching for any evidence of her brother.
“Come on dude!” She shouted desperately, keeping back tears as she continued walking till she found something shining in the snow.
As she approached the item she dusted off snow from it revealing what it was.
A shotgun.
In the barrel was carved the Whitlocke crest and a name. The name of her brother, Malachi.
It was her brothers.

“Malachi, shouldn't we make a plan?” Lilith spoke, her breath forming clouds of fog in the chilly air.
“It's one guy why would we need a plan,” He spoke back, “two of us, one of him, sounds like a good enough plan to me.”
“I don't know dude.”
“We'll be fine. He's probably asleep anyways.”
“I guess you're right,” she said, looking at the watch that hung from her belt the sun would be fully set in one hour; “But just in case something happens-”
“Which it won't,”
“But you know I love my backup plans,” She quipped back.
“Yup,” He said, popping the ‘p’.
“Just in case, split up and meet back at the village. They will have to choose one of us to chase and we can both hold our own in a one on one.”
“Gotcha,” he held a thumbs up to her with a bright smile, “now we ready?”
“I guess.”
The two siblings approached the snow-covered cabin, surveying the area for any proof of life.
“This place looks desolate,” Malachi spoke, shuffling around the yard of the cabin and peering in through the half-broken windows.
“Maybe they got news of us coming and they ran?”
“Maybe, let's head inside; get some more information,” Malachi spoke while forcing open the door. The door opened with a squeak as dust fell from the frame. Inside the cabin, it looked worse. Furniture was knocked over, and covered in tarps and cobwebs.
“False report?” Lilith asked while dusting off a small picture frame.
“Probably, head back to the village to gather information?”
“What did I say before we even came in here?” Lilith said with a snarky tone.
“Oh shut up,” as Malachi finished speaking a loud creek sounded throughout the whole cabin.
“That wasn't us,” Lilith spoke softly, pulling her gun from her holster. Malachi didn't respond as he pulled his sword from his belt. The two carefully walked through the rest of the rooms clearing the whole place.
“There's nothing here,” Malachi said disappointedly.
“We didn't clear the perimeter so let's do that before we head out.” Lilith spoke, holstering her own weapon. The two walked out and carefully wandered the perimeter of the cabin and its land before stumbling upon something.
There, covered in snow, sat the entrance to a cellar. Malachi pried open the door, it opened with a loud clunk and revealed a dark tunnel.
“Ladies first,” He stepped to the side and motioned for Lilith to enter.
“What?” She responded shocked, “you have the short range weapon you go first.”
“I know, I’m messing with you.” Malachi climbed into the tunnel and carefully made his way deeper followed by the shorter sibling. “This is definitely it, Lil.”
“I have to agree so be on guard,” she whispered back, “being in this place makes it easy for us to get caught.”
“Then we'll just have to be fast.” The two made their way to the bottom of the tunnel to see a large poorly lit room. A few lanterns littered the room that was filled with blankets and pillows.
“Interesting layout,” Lilith said.
“Interesting indeed.”
Suddenly the silence was broken with a loud creak. It was the same loud creak that they heard earlier but this time louder, and followed by footsteps.
“They're here,” Malachi spoke softly, reading himself for the fight.
“Malachi, something is wrong.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Listen closely, that's not just one pair of footsteps.”
The two listened in silence, and sure enough, two, three, four. Four people walk towards them from different directions.
“Lil,”
“I’m on the same page.”
The two ran towards the tunnel, they couldn’t take that fight in tight quarters. As they ran, so did the footsteps, and they ran fast. Malachi got out first, he was always faster than Lilith, he was taller and had longer legs.
As she approached the door to the outside she felt a hand grasp her ankle, turning around she finally saw the face of her prey. Only she felt like the prey now. She froze at the look of the man grasping at her leg. He didn't look evil, other than the look in his eyes. He looked like just another man, with deep brown hair, pale skin, and deep burgundy eyes.
Lilith couldn't move as the deep red eyes pierced into her mind sending her into a frozen trance.
She was ripped out of the trance as Malachi pushed her shoulder down and fired his gun into the vampire's face. The smell of black powder filled the air, the strong smell of smoke and now blood was a nauseating mix.
“Lil!” Malachi shouted, pulling her backward, “let's go.”
Three more to go.
“Thanks,” She breathed out harshly.
“You owe me,” he laughed stiffly.
Two more crawled out from the tunnel after them.
“I take the one on the left, you get the one on the right?” Lilith spoke looking at the two in front of them.
“Sounds good to me.”
The two began fighting separate battles, Lilith used tree cover to stay at a distance whereas Malachi fought up close and personal. The two were doing well.
Forgetting about the fourth was their mistake.
Suddenly Lilith was tackled by a large body and pinned to the ground, her now smoking gun flying away in the snow. She yelped as her body hit the ground with a loud thud as she was pinned down by a large vampire, he looked the most sane out of the four meaning he was most likely the leader of this group. He had stringy silver hair that fell over his pale skin and bright red eyes that stared into the girl.
“Lilith!” Malachi shouted, turning around and seeing his sister on the ground under the beast.
Lilith pushed against the stronger beast as he smirked, “you're a lot weaker than the others, little Whitlocke.”
Malachi quickly slashed one of the beasts in half before he charged at the one pinning his sister just to get cut off by the other beast.
Lilith shivered as the beast got closer to her neck, “I wonder if you taste like your siblings little one” his breath tickled at her neck. His fangs glistened as he bit down on her shoulder harshly. Lilith reached down grabbing the small dagger from her belt and plunging it into his shoulder. He released her stumbling backwards hissing at the pain as he ripped the dagger from his shoulder.
“You taste even sweeter than your siblings,” The vampire’s face cracked into a wicked smile as he threw the dagger to the ground, “maybe I should keep you as a little trophy.”
Lilith turned, seeing Malachi fighting against the other beast. The girl ran towards her gun that lay in the snow, as soon as she grabbed it she turned and fired at the vampire chasing towards him. He dodged the bullet swiftly clawing at the girl's face before she could dodge. His sharp claws dug into her face creating a deep gash across her nose as she screamed falling backwards and clutching her face, the deep red blood splattered against the pure snow.
“You know, I was hoping for one of the others to show up,” He spoke walking towards the girl who lay on the ground clinging to her face, “but you are quite a surprise; who knew the Whitlockes had a little runt and another puppy running around. Let me introduce myself. My name is Athan. May I assume your's is Lilith my little runt?” He spoke harshly, grabbing her chin, wiping at the blood that trickled down her face, and licking it off his fingers.
Our conversation was cut off by a scream as Malachi sliced through the other vampire before staring daggers at the vampire holding his sister's face.
“I wonder if you taste the same,” He released Lilith's face standing up to face the taller twin.
“Back off my sister,” Malachi hissed at him.
“What a good protective pup,” He said with a sickening smile.
“Mal!” Lilith shouted to her brother, “do this together!”
“Yup,” Malachi said, readying his short sword as he stared at the vampire between them. Malachi charged towards the vampire.

A search for what is lost CH 1
CH 1- The Twins
AN- I've had this written for a while and in my head for even longer but here I am finally posting it so... take it... ANYWAYS ya this is a story written about an abandoned DND character that I still love but the campaign party disbanded after like two sessions so here I am not letting the character go to waste. This is going purely backstory for a while and not touch the campaign for a few chapters and once we do hit campaign I will not be using the other peoples characters instead I will have other abandoned DND builds of mine and will have a changed story line from the campaign we tried to play. (its gonna be similar tho cause that campaign was PERFECT for my character to show angst and backstory)
ALSO my family is pretty sure I'm dyslexic so forgive any mistakes k? TW- Guns, lost siblings, violence, blood, vampires, dnd nonsense, tell me if I am missing anything thnx I've never really done anything like this
Tumblr media
The Whitlockes: a powerful family of mercenaries that took jobs others shy away from. They were some of the strongest known mercenaries in the business. They specialized in beasts of the night, werewolves, vampires, and many more sentient creatures other groups did not wish to fight. To the public, the Whitlockes felt no sympathy for anybody or any creature that left people in fear. They even helped to create a new type of weaponry to complete missions faster and more efficiently. Using black powder and shrapnel, the father created a firearm that did immense damage to his enemies. The weapon was refined until the Whitlocke firearms were created, a line of weapons only carried by the family; their trademark.
In private they were a small loving family training each other to survive anything they were faced with.
They were well known, a family of 4 noble mercenaries for hire; the parents, Kathryn and Elijah, and two children, Aria and Dyer. Below all the public knowledge there were two more children, kept out of the public eye to keep them safe. A set of twins named Lilith and Malachi. The two twins could not have been more different. They looked the same however underneath eyes and hair they were nothing alike. Malachi preferred constant fighting training and loved talking to others. Lilith would rather sit in her family's library and research to learn more about her future missions. Neither of them was suited to go on missions alone. Malachi had proved to not think through plans and run ahead and Lilith wasn't strong enough to defend herself in a fight. Due to this, the family made a decision that they would be the first Whitlocke duo to fight together.
However, their first mission was delayed after more and more mission reports came back as either false calls or sabotaged missions. They decided that Elijah and Kathryn would stay at home full-time and train their youngest children. As the time for the twins' first mission approached the others continued coming back worse and worse from their own missions and so the hardest decision was made by the family.
They disappeared.
No longer did they take missions from anyone who came pleading for help, the only people who knew how to contact them were other noble families and royalty from the surrounding kingdoms. Even then, extensive research was done into the missions before someone was sent out. The twins were strictly trained and taught everything they would need to know. Elijah had made all his children firearms that complemented their own fighting styles, Lilith and Malachi were no exception. On their 18th birthday, the two received their weapons and on their 20th they received their first mission. Malachi received a firearm that fired a handful of small bullets in a large area, this paired with his close ranged fighting and sword skills. Lilith received a simple and small weapon that could fire six times before reloading to accommodate her weaker stature.
Their first mission was simple. A vampire living in the woods outside a smaller village, a job sent in by the Nobel in charge of the village. The two began their journey to the village shortly after their birthday. The cold weather nipped at their noses and fingers as snow started to peacefully fall along their path, the two could agree that winter had always been their favorite season. The peaceful ambiance didn't last long as Malachi started talking about whatever he could, the noise was nicer than the eerie silence as they walked. After several days of travel, they came to their destination.
“Almost there, Lil?” Malachi asked the younger twin.
“The village is just ahead, I can see the rooftops from here.”
“Perfect, now where is the beast!” Malachi said with excitement as he bounced a little, the snow under his feet crunching as he jumped
“According to the notes dad gave us, the target is actually living somewhere in these woods. Shall we go talk to the nobel in the village?”
“Na we can get this done easily,” Malachi stretched as he spoke, “we've been training for an extra two years and I’m ready to get some action!”
“Malachi, we’re supposed to confirm the mission with the client, get any new information, did you listen to anything mom and dad told us?”
“I did but is it really that necessary, I mean you know Aria and Dyer don't do it for these kinds of missions.”
“I guess,” Lilith replied hesitantly, “the target lives in these woods and has been attacking the local hunters, they have never entered the village which leads me to believe they are weaker; an easy hit.”
“Then let's get going!” Malachi shouted
“First, in case things go south-”
“Which they won't.” he cut her off.
“But just in case, split up and meet in the village center.”
“Gotcha!” Malachi seemed to speed up his walking as they searched the woods for any signs of life. The sun was beginning to set, coating the snow-covered forest in a golden blanket of light.
“Perfect timing, the target should be active right about now, stay on your toes.”
“Hear that beast!” Malachi yelled.
“Malachi!” She quipped back trying to shut him up.
“We're coming for you!” He smiled at Lilith, “the soon to be famous Whitlocke duo!”
“You really shouldn't have announced that we’re coming,” Lilith grumbled at the boy's actions which caused him to laugh.
“What Lil, you said yourself it would be an easy hit,” he said, “and I want a challenge.”
The sun set fast and now they walked through the dark forest. A rundown cabin appeared across the horizon as they continued.
“Think that's it?” Lilith asked the boy who was a few steps ahead of her.
“Only one way to find out,” Malachi pulled his short sword from his hip, leaving his shotgun slung across his back. Lilith rushed to catch up with the taller twin as he walked towards the cabin.
