Sonadow one shot number 28: I Held My Breath
I held my breath 'til I turned blue.
Not from running. Not from holding it for a challenge or a stunt.
But because I thought maybe—just maybe—you'd notice me.
Among all the grays in your world—cold concrete, quiet glares, silent sighs—I wanted to be a color that made you stop and look.
I wasn't sure when I started feeling like this. Maybe it was during one of our fights, when your eyes held more pain than fury. Maybe it was in that split second between dodging a Chaos Spear and realizing you never really aimed to hit me.
You always acted like I was just noise.
A distraction.
A blur.
But I saw how your eyes lingered, like you were trying to memorize the way I moved.
Like you were afraid I'd vanish the moment you blinked.
So I kept showing up.
Louder. Brighter. Faster.
Anything to keep your attention.
I joked, I teased, I laughed like I wasn't aching inside.
I smiled like I didn't feel invisible to you most days.
And every time I left, I'd wait for you to say something.
Anything.
But you never did.
So I held my breath.
I held it through the silence.
Through your cold shoulders and sharp words.
Through the aching nights I couldn't sleep, wondering if I was enough.
Wondering if I was too much.
Maybe that's what love is for someone like me—trying so hard to be seen by someone who only looks at shadows.
But one day, you looked at me differently.
You didn't speak. You didn't move.
You just... stared.
Like you finally saw what I was trying to say all this time.
And for a moment, I felt like the color you needed.
You reached out, your fingers brushing mine.
No bravado. No smirk. Just quiet understanding.
"I didn't think I was allowed to want this," you whispered.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
So I just leaned in, forehead against yours.
"I turned blue for you, you know."
You let out a breath, the tiniest smile tugging at your lips.
"I noticed."
And in that moment, I didn't feel like I had to hold my breath anymore.
Besides, I think blue is your favorite color anyway.

The One That Swam Away one shot mini series
I'm soo invested in this AU now folks, so expect the next few parts of this new mini series rather quickly, I'm having a blast writing it. I never used to like Mermaid AUs cause they just seemed weird to me, but now...oh boy, I love it.
***
The sea was calmer than usual, and Sonic hated it.
No wind in the sails. No storm on the horizon. No tension in the ropes. Just... stillness. The kind that made his fur itch.
He leaned over the edge of the Starfall, one gloved hand clutching the weathered railing while the other dangled lazily over the waves. His emerald eyes squinted at the water, watching how the sun broke into shimmering pieces on the rolling blue. It was too quiet. The rest of the crew was below deck, either dozing in hammocks or playing cards, but Sonic had never been one to sit still.
Not when something kept showing up in the water.
He'd seen it three times now.
Once at dawn, once during a fog that had rolled in like a ghost, and once—just last night—beneath the moonlight, slicing through the water like a living shadow.
A fin, black and sleek. A glint of crimson. A shape that was almost too fast for the eye.
Too graceful to be a shark. Too big to be a dolphin. And way too curious for its own good.
Sonic tapped his foot restlessly, then looked down again. "Alright, fishy," he muttered under his breath, "you gonna show up today or what?"
There was a sudden bloop, a flicker beneath the surface, and Sonic's heart jumped. He straightened, eyes narrowing.
There—just beneath the hull—a long, sleek tail flicked upward before disappearing into a trail of bubbles. Black. Smooth. Almost like obsidian. Sonic caught a flash of red... fins? Eyes?
He wasn't sure.
"Hey!" he barked, half-laughing, leaning over the rail. "You again! Come back here!"
Nothing. Just ripples.
"Always runnin'," he murmured, lips tugging into a grin. "You think you're fast or something?"
He scanned the water again, but the creature—whatever it waswas gone. Slipped back into the deep.
Sonic sighed and leaned back from the rail, folding his arms behind his head.
"Well, that makes four times," he said to no one. "And that wasn't a fish. Or if it is... it's the coolest damn fish I've ever seen."
***
The Starfall wasn't the biggest pirate ship on the seas, but it was the fastest—and that suited Sonic just fine.
A lean, double-masted schooner with dark sails and silver trim along the hull, it had a sharp profile that cut through the ocean like a blade. The ship's figurehead was a winged star, partially chipped at the edges, but still gleaming with old gold leaf. She creaked like she was alive, whispering secrets in the wind.
Sonic had been a part of the Starfall's crew for a little over two years, mostly as a scout and lookout—though when things got hairy, he was the first overboard and onto enemy decks. He was the fastest on the ship (by far), and while he didn't always follow orders to the letter, the crew trusted him when it mattered.
He'd climb the rigging in record time, leap from the crow's nest to the deck without blinking, and outrun cannon fire if he had to. But lately, even the thrill of raiding trade vessels or escaping the Navy felt... dull.
Maybe that's why the creature intrigued him so much.
It was new. Mysterious. Fast.
And watching him.
Captain Knuckles the Dread didn't know about it—not yet. The Captain had eyes like a hawk and instincts sharper than a dagger, but he didn't believe in "sea myths" or "merfolk tales." He believed in maps, gold, and leverage. In that order.
Sonic had thought about telling him once... but then decided against it. He couldn't explain it, but some part of him wanted to keep this to himself.
At least for now.
So he started finishing his duties early.
Sails trimmed? Done before the sun hit the crow's nest.
Deck swabbed? Ten minutes flat.
Cargo inventory? He memorized the count faster than Black Rose could double-check it.
Every time he wrapped up his tasks, he made his way to the edge of the Starfall, the same spot near the stern, where the shadows fell thickest over the water. And every time, he had a little pouch slung at his side, filled with tiny silver fish he'd swiped from the kitchen barrels.
He called it "bait," though he never used the word out loud.
Each fish he tossed into the sea, he did it slow and casual—like he wasn't expecting anything. Like he wasn't watching the water with bated breath and wide eyes.
Plip.
One fish.
A pause.
Then a streak of black beneath the surface, a blur—and snap!—the fish vanished with a violent ripple. Gone.
"Just like a shark," Sonic whispered, eyebrows lifting. "A weird, red-eyed, speedy shark..."
But he knew it wasn't.
Sharks didn't move like that. Sharks didn't hover just out of reach, circling the ship in silence. Sharks didn't have shoulders. He was sure he saw them, last time. Barely—outlined against the glimmer of the moon—but there.
He kept feeding it. One fish at a time. Sometimes it didn't show. Sometimes he tossed the whole pouch and got nothing but seafoam.
But other days... it came in close.
Once, when the sun was setting behind a fogbank and the whole ocean had turned gold, Sonic had leaned over the rail and seen something directly beneath him, hovering still. Just a shape. Silhouetted.
A figure with arms. Quills. A long, smooth tail that curled lazily behind it like a banner in the breeze. Watching him.
Sonic didn't move. He didn't even breathe.
But then, just as quickly—it darted away.
"Always runnin'..." he murmured again, dragging a hand down his face. "Why do you keep runnin'?"
The next night, Sonic didn't go to the railing.
He went below deck.
Past the hammocks and the crates of stolen goods, past the rum barrels and locked treasure chests. He ducked into the narrow corridor that led to the crew's shared library—if it could be called that. Really, it was a collection of mismatched books crammed into a shelf nailed to the hull. Salt-warped pages, broken spines, ink faded with age and moisture.
Most of the crew ignored it. But Sonic had learned to read during his time on the Starfall, and once the mysterious creature showed up, he found himself flipping through old sea journals and weathered bestiaries more and more often.
Tonight, he grabbed three.
He flopped onto the crate that served as a makeshift bench and cracked open the first one, titled Beasts and Terrors of the Endless Sea. The illustrations were crude, but some of them made his quills stand on end—scaled serpents, glowing-eyed leviathans, things with teeth for fingers.
But none of them matched what he saw.
Next, a thick, dusty volume labeled The Forgotten Races: Myths and Monsters. He paged through drawings of kraken, sirens, and creatures of the deep. One section caught his eye—half a page sketching out a silhouette that looked eerily familiar. Humanoid. Long tail. Red eyes. Sharp fins where ears should've been.
The caption read:
The Abysskin
Said to dwell where the ocean is blackest. Some claim they were once gods. Others, cursed royalty. Rarely seen. Always watching. Dangerous. Fast. Intelligent. May appear curious, but do not mistake that for kindness.
Sonic stared at the sketch for a long moment, thumb grazing the lines.
"...Abysskin," he repeated, trying the word out on his tongue. "Is that what you are?"
He leaned back against the wall, brow furrowed, the book still open in his lap.
Dangerous. Fast. Intelligent.
"Well," he said, chuckling to himself, "you got the fast part down."
He closed the book gently, hugging it against his chest as the Starfallrocked with the rhythm of the sea.
***
The next afternoon, the Starfall docked at a bustling port city—white stone buildings stacked like dice, gulls crying overhead, and the stink of fish and salt thick in the air.
Knuckles the Dread had sent the crew off with a flourish and a purse of coins to "blow on anything that doesn't talk back." Sonic had nodded, agreed, and then vanished the second his back was turned.
He didn't want drinks or dice or drama.
He wanted answers.
Which is why he now found himself crouching like a lunatic behind a big boulder at the far end of the beach, arms full of fish, and whispering like a madman.
"C'mon, shadow-fishy... I brought snacks. You like snacks, right?" he called softly, tossing a small, glistening sardine into the shallows with a dramatic plop. "Premium stuff. Stole it straight from our cook. Risked my tail for this."
The water rippled. Sonic's ears perked.
A flash of black. A flick of red.
Then—nothing.
He narrowed his eyes. "I saw that."
He reached into his pouch and tossed another fish. Then another. He even tried wiggling one dramatically like some kind of sea siren.
"You're just playin' with me now, huh? That it? Think you're clever?" He pointed to the water accusingly. "Well, joke's on you! I read books last night. I know what you are. You're an Abyss-somethin'. I studied! That makes me the smart one now!"
He waited.
The water stilled. Not a single wave broke the surface.
Sonic blinked. "...You're not gonna show up just to spite me, are you?"
Suddenly, a small splash behind him made him whirl—and trip over his own feet. He landed on his back with a yelp, arms flailing as a trail of fish rained down onto his chest.
By the time he sat up, soaked in salt and seaweed, there was nothing but a few missing fish and the sound of laughter—quiet, low, and very amused.
Sonic froze.
Laughter.
His eyes darted across the beach, then out to the water.
A sleek, black tail slid back into the waves with a gentle flick.
"You little—!" Sonic scrambled to his feet, flinging a fish after it like a thrown gauntlet. "I knew you were messing with me!"
The fish splashed down harmlessly.
The only answer was a ripple, almost smug.
Sonic threw his arms up, grinning despite himself. "Oh, you think you're so funny. Fine! Be like that. I'll just sit here until you come back!"
He did.
For two hours.
Got sunburned, bit by a crab, and possibly peed on by a seagull.
The Abysskin never came back.
But Sonic swore—as he limped back to port, shoes full of sand and pride thoroughly dented—that he saw glowing red eyes watching him from the surf. Laughing. Again.

Sonadow one shot number #27: Cream’s Tea Party
Cream's bedroom was like a pink and yellow glitter bomb had exploded. Plushies and dolls lay scattered across the floor, some with hair so matted and tangled it looked like they hadn't seen a brush in a millennium. The curtains were drawn, but the sun still found a way to stream in through the gaps, casting a warm glow over the chaotic space. Cream's closet was jam-packed with princess dresses and fairy tutus, all in a delightful array of pastel shades. Her bed was a four-poster, the canopy adorned with pink and white lace, and it looked like the kind of place a real-life princess would sleep in. On the bedside table, there was a delicate teapot with a chipped spout and a collection of mismatched teacups.
"Wow...uh...this looks nice." Sonic said nervously, side-stepping a pile of plushies to avoid a trip hazard.
"Welcome to my tea party!" Cream exclaimed happily, motioning to a white table in the corner near a beige reading nook, covered with a pink tablecloth and set with dainty sandwiches and an assortment of sweets. "I knew you two would come!"
Shadow grunted a response, glaring at a princess doll that looked like it was glaring back at him. He was not thrilled to be here, but he always had a soft spot for the little rabbit. Naturally, Cream knew he'd do whatever she wanted, so the second she asked, he couldn't say no. Sonic, on the other hand, while he did enjoy and adore Cream like a big brother would, tea parties weren't exactly his scene. But Cream had a magical ability that even the fastest hedgehog couldn't outrun—persistence.
"Thank you both for coming over, she was really looking forward to this," Vanilla, Cream's mother, said as she set down a tray of freshly baked scones. She shot a knowing smile at Sonic and Shadow before retreating to the kitchen, leaving the unlikely trio to navigate the sea of frills and lace.
"Okay, let's get this started." Sonic said, rubbing his hands together with feigned enthusiasm as he sat down in a chair that looked like it was made for someone a quarter of his size. It creaked precariously beneath his weight, but Cream was too busy shoving Shadow into the seat beside Sonic to notice.
"This is Mr. Elephant, he'll also be joining us today!" Cream announced, placing a plush elephant with a bow tie in a chair opposite the two hedgehogs. "And this one is Miss Kitty!" She set down a feline doll with a pink bonnet next to Mr. Elephant. "She has a crush on Mr. Doggy, but she's too shy to tell him!"
"Ah, well, that's not good." Sonic chuckled, trying to keep the conversation flowing as he eyed the plate of sandwiches. They were meticulously cut into triangles, with the crusts removed, just like a proper tea party should have.
"Mommy made super yummy food for the party, because I wanted this to be the best tea party ever!" Cream said with a proud smile, her cheeks flushing with excitement.
"Do you happen to have bigger chairs?" Shadow grumbled, his legs sticking out awkwardly from the chair. He shot Sonic a look that clearly said 'I told you so'.
"No, these are the chairs you have to use at a tea party," Cream said firmly, pouring imaginary tea into a cup that looked like it could hold no more than a mouthful. She placed the teapot back on its stand with a clink, then proceeded to add a spoonful of imaginary sugar to her own cup. "Introduction time! Mr. Elephant, you go first!"
Sonic and Shadow sat in silence as they stared at the elephant plushie, as he introduced himself to the empty chair next to him. Cream's eyes sparkled with excitement, fully invested in her fantasy.
Sonic and Shadow sat in silence as they stared at the elephant plushie, as he introduced himself to the empty chair next to him. Cream's eyes sparkled with excitement, fully invested in her fantasy. Sonic and Shadow exchanged a glance that screamed 'we're in for it'.
"Alright, now Miss Kitty." Cream said, turning her attention to the feline doll. "What's new in your life?"
Miss Kitty remained silent, her plastic eyes staring straight ahead, like a zombie at a buffet. Sonic leaned over and whispered, "Maybe Miss Kitty is just really into the whole 'mysterious' vibe."
Cream giggled and nodded. "Heh, yeah, Miss Kitty is always so mysterious!" She took a dainty bite of a sandwich, her cheeks bulging slightly as she chewed. "Your turn, Mr. Sonic!"
"Oh...my turn? Uh...." Sonic stalled, looking at the toys surrounding him as if searching for inspiration. "Well, I've been, uh, really into...uh...running lately," he said, trying to keep a straight face.
Shadow snorted. "Brilliant, Sonic. Keep it riveting."
Sonic shot him a look but continued, "Yeah, you know, just...speedrunning through loops and collecting rings. It's all the rage in the...uh...hedgehog community."
Shadow rolled his eyes.
Cream giggled again, her eyes wide with wonder. "Wow, that sounds super fun!" She took a pretend sip from her teacup, the pinky of her left hand raised elegantly in the air. "Your turn, Mr. Shadow!"
Shadow huffed, crossing his arms. "Shadow."
"That's...it?" Sonic smirked, raising an eyebrow.
"What more do you need?"
"Oh, I dunno, maybe tell us what you've been up to, Mr. Shadow?" Sonic chuckled. "You know, aside from your usual brooding and fighting evil."
"Mister Shadow is super strong!" Cream said to Mr. Elephant and Miss Kitty, her eyes shining with excitement. "He saves everyone all the time!"
Shadow chuckled, a rare sight, and leaned back in his chair, which protested with a series of squeaks and groans. "Well, if you must know, I've been tasked with new assignments from G.U.N. It's top-secret, though. Can't say much."
"No, no, Mister Shadow. You run a cute flower shop that only sells black roses!" Cream exclaimed, clapping her hands together. "And sometimes lavender and daisies, too! You love flowers, so you opened up your own shop!"
Shadow blinked. "Uh...what now?"
"And Mister Sonic has a secret garden where he grows the fastest carrots in the world!" Cream said with a grin, her imagination clearly running wild. "These carrots are super fast and have little legs so they can run away when you want to eat them!"
"Ooh, that sounds cool!" Sonic laughed, leaning forward. "But what happens when someone actually wants to buy one?"
"They race you to the checkout, of course!" Cream said, her eyes lighting up at her own ingenuity. "You have to be super quick to catch them!"
"Oh, cool!" Sonic grinned, then reached for a finger sandwich. Cream slapped his hand away, and he yelped, "Hey, what gives?"
"It's not sandwich time, I didn't ring the bell!" Cream said sternly, holding up a small, gold-painted bell. It tinkled gently as she set it back on the table. "We must wait for the proper moment!"
"Yeah, Sonic." Shadow said sarcastically, "It's all about the etiquette at a tea party." He leaned back in his chair, which emitted a series of alarming squeaks. "You wouldn't want to break any rules."
"Well, you're about to break that chair."
"I'll break your nose."
"No arguing at a tea party!" Cream said, ringing her bell quickly. "No arguing."
"Shads started it." Sonic muttered, rubbing his hand.
"No, bad Shadow, no fighting!" Cream said with mock sternness, pointing her index finger at the two of them. "Drink your delicious tea!"
Shadow reached for his cup, raising a brow. "These are empty-"
Sonic elbowed him gently. "Just go with it, man." He took a pretend sip from his own teacup and gave a dramatic 'ahh' of satisfaction. Shadow sighed and mimed drinking his tea as well, the three of them sitting in an awkward silence that was only pierced by the occasional giggle from Cream as she whispered secrets to Mr. Elephant and Miss Kitty.
"Is it good?" Cream asked hopefully, leaning forward in her chair.
"Super good." Sonic grinned, his tail wagging.
"Yes, it's...satisfactory." Shadow nodded, his expression stoic.
Cream giggled, her cotton tail waving back and forth with excitement. "Okay, now it's time for....oh!" She gasped like she just remembered something incredibly important. "Oh no! I forgot the pizza rolls!"
She scurried out of the room, leaving her two guests looking at each other in bemusement."This is ridiculous and a waste of my time." Shadow grumbled, shifting in his seat. The chair looked ready to collapse under his weight, but somehow it held on, much to Sonic's amusement.
"Yeah, but she's just a kid, I mean, you can carve out an hour for this, right?" Sonic said, trying to lighten the mood. "Besides, you know you enjoy spending time with her."
"I suppose I do, but only because she's the only one who can get me to do things like this," Shadow grumbled, his stern gaze softening slightly. "But I draw the line at pretending to eat invisible food and drink invisible tea."
"You just didn't have a fun childhood." Sonic said as he pretended to sip loudly from his teacup. "This is what normal people do."
"Normal people pretend to suckle at invisible teacups?" Shadow raised an eyebrow at Sonic.
"Yep."
"I'm glad I am not normal."
"I'm back!" Cream's voice sang out, and she reentered the room, her arms loaded with a plate of steaming pizza rolls. She carefully placed them on the table. "Mommy says they're still super hot, so don't burn your mouths!"
"How long do you suppose tea parties are supposed to last?" Shadow whispered to Sonic.
"As long as Cream wants it to." Sonic whispered back, popping another pizza roll into his mouth, the cheese stretching like warm, gooey strings. "Mm, these are pretty good."
"Okay, finger sandwich time!" Cream rang her bell with a cheerful tinkle.
Sonic grinned and grabbed a sandwich, only for Cream to yet again stop him to correct his etiquette. "No, Mister Sonic, you gotta use the teeny tiny forks!" she exclaimed, pointing to a set of plastic forks that looked like they were made for a doll.
"Those look like a crumb would break them," Shadow muttered, gingerly picking up a fork with his thumb and forefinger, eyeing it as if it were a dangerous weapon.
"They're for the dainty bites," Cream said, her eyes shining with excitement. "See?" She demonstrated, delicately balancing a triangle of sandwich on the tiny tines. "It's part of the tea party experience!"
"Yeah, Shadow, it's for the experience," Sonic teased, waving a minuscule fork at him. He took a dainty bite of his sandwich, exaggerating his chewing motions for Cream's benefit. She clapped her hands together happily.
"Oh, new game! Mister Sonic, you can be the wife and Mister Shadow can be the husband!" Cream exclaimed giddily.
Sonic spat out his imaginary tea, choking on pure shock. "W-what?"
"Excuse me?" Shadow asked, tilting his head.
"Yeah!" Cream beamed, her eyes wide with excitement. "A husband and wife! Mommy says that a husband and wife do stuff together, like kissy-kissy and hold hands!"
"Uh..." Sonic slowly looked over at Shadow, who gave him a look that said 'don't you dare'. "Okay, so...how do we play?"
"Kiss!" Cream giggled, holding her cheeks as she watched Sonic and Shadow's stunned expressions.
"I...uh...well...." Sonic stuttered, his cheeks turning a deep shade of crimson as he glanced over at Shadow, who looked equally horrified at the prospect of playing pretend couple with him."No, it's just pretend." Cream said, as if that would make it any less awkward.
"Oh, I feel so much better now." Shadow deadpanned, setting down his teacup with a clank.
"Cream, uh...maybe we should stick to something a little less...personal," Sonic suggested, giving a nervous laugh.
"I wanna play pretend couple," Cream insisted, her eyes wide with hope. "It's fun!"
"Well, I'm not really into the whole 'kissy-kissy' thing," Sonic said, looking anywhere but at Shadow. "But we can pretend to be friends, right?"
Cream shook her head firmly, her eyes wide with disappointment. "No, Mister Sonic, you're the wife!"
"Why am I the wife? Make Shadow the wife!"
"I'm far to masculine for that," Shadow said, his voice gruff.
Cream pouted. "But it's just pretend, come on! One kissy!"
"But...what about Miss Kitty and Mister Elephant? Surely they don't wanna see that," Sonic said, sweat forming on his brow as he looked for an escape from the situation.
Cream grabbed said plushies and turned them around, facing the wall. "They won't see a thing," she said, her voice filled with mischief. "They're busy planning their own wedding!"
"Wait, I thought the cat had a crush on the dog..." Shadow said, looking between the two plushies.
"You actually followed that story?" Sonic whispered to Shadow, his eyes wide with amazement.
"Shut up."
"Mister Sonic, you married Mister Shadow, but are angry because Mister Shadow is always busy with his work at the flower shop and never takes you on dates," Cream said, her little paws clutching her chest in a dramatic fashion. "And now Mister Sonic has to confront Mister Shadow and ask for some love!"
Sonic gulped, slowly turning to look at Shadow. "Uh...how dare you...um...dear?" He said awkwardly.
"I...apologize for neglecting you...my dear," Shadow said through gritted teeth, choking out the last word.
"You should really...uh...show more love...and uh...take me to more places?" Sonic continued, trying to keep his voice steady as he played along.
"I agree...dear," Shadow said, his voice laced with reluctance. "You are....ugh...right. I should make more time for you." He took a deep breath, visibly steeling himself for the next part. "How about a...a picnic next week?"
"I think a five star restaurant would be more appropriate, don't you, darling?" Sonic quipped, giving a wide grin.
"Expensive as always, I see? Well, I can spare the time for that," Shadow said, his voice as flat as a pancake, but the hint of a smile playing on his lips. He stabbed a pizza roll with the play fork and held it to Sonic's mouth. "Here, my love, let me feed you."
Blushing like a tomato, Sonic opened his mouth to accept the pizza roll. "Thanks...lovely?"
"Awwwww!" Cream squealed with delight. "You two are so sweet! Do more!"
"Like what?" Shadow asked, his smirk growing slightly as he watched Sonic's squirming.
"Oh, I know!" Cream clapped her hands together. "You could pretend to dance together!"
"Dance?" Sonic repeated, looking at Shadow with a hopeful glint in his eye. "I can handle that."
"I can wear my tutu now!" Cream hurried over to her closet and pulled out a small, pink tutu, slipping it over her head. She twirled around, the frills fluttering, and looked at Sonic and Shadow expectantly. They both gave stiff thumbs-up.
"I have music, too!" Cream exclaimed, her tail wagging with excitement as she dashed over to a pink boombox that matched the rest of the room's decor. She pressed play, and a bubbly, whimsical melody filled the air, sounding like an opera classic remixed with a children's TV show theme. She hurried over and grabbed both their hands, pulling them up from their chairs. "Everyone dances at tea parties!"
"They do?" Shadow questioned before Cream shoved them together, their noses almost touching as she placed their hands in the proper dance position.
"You have to dance super fancy and stuff, like you're rich!" Cream exclaimed, demonstrating with a wobbly twirl, her long ears flapping with the force of her enthusiasm.
"Well, since I'm just the little wife, you gotta lead, Shads." Sonic grinned, wagging his tail.
Shadow glared at him but took the lead with a dramatic flourish, his movements surprisingly graceful despite his initial protests. He held Sonic close to his chest, their hands awkwardly intertwined as they began to move somewhat in time to the music. Sonic tried to follow along, his laughter echoing around the room as he attempted to mimic the fancy footwork Cream had shown them. Cream herself was dancing flamboyantly, her tutu bouncing around her as she twirled between her guests.
"Well, you had a change of heart, huh?" Sonic said flirtatiously, winking at Shadow as they stumbled through a clumsy waltz.
"Don't get used to it." Shadow dipped Sonic down dramatically, then brought him back up, the corners of his eyes crinkling slightly. "This is all for Cream's enjoyment, remember?"
"Ya look like you're enjoying something." Sonic teased, trying not to step on Shadow's shoes.
"Am I not allowed to enjoy something?" Shadow smirked, leaning closer to Sonic's ear, making him jump slightly.
"Don't get too into character now," Sonic whispered back, his cheeks flushing as he stumbled over the steps.
"Is my wife shy?" Shadow taunted, spinning Sonic around.
"Is my husband trying to kill me?" Sonic quipped, gripping onto Shadow tightly as they danced.
Shadow's smirk grew wider. "Perhaps you should've chosen a less dangerous partner, dear."
"I would have, but Mister Elephant was already taken," Sonic retorted with a sly grin.
"Oh, very funny, Mister Sonic." Shadow rolled his eyes, but he pulled Sonic just a bit closer, his hands holding onto the hedgehog's waist firmly to keep him from falling over.
Their noses were inches from touching, and for a brief second, Sonic thought they were going to kiss for real, and he wasn't entirely sure if he would have stopped it if they did.
"My turn to dance with Mister Shadow!" Cream's voice startled them, breaking the tension. She tugged at Sonic's arm, her eyes wide with excitement.
"Oh, what a shame," Shadow said, his smirk not quite reaching his eyes as he released Sonic and offered his hand to Cream. "But if the lady insists..."
Sonic took a step back, allowing Cream to take his spot. Shadow took her tiny hands into his and began to dance with her, her small frame barely reaching his waist. She giggled and twirled under his lead, the tutu spinning around her like a cloud of cotton candy. Sonic could see Shadow smiling as he dipped her dramatically, her giggles filling the room.
Vanilla poked her head into the room, a smile forming on her face. "Oh, how sweet, you're all dancing!" She clapped her hands together and snapped a few photos with her camera. "Cream, you're growing up so fast!"
"Mister Sonic and Mister Shadow are married and they danced real close!" Cream explained happily as Shadow twirled her around.
"Oh...really?" Vanilla looked over at Sonic as if for confirmation, and he shrugged with a sheepish smile, as if to say, 'what can you do?'

Sonadow one shot number #26: Dear Faker
Dear Faker,
I...this may be the most ridiculous mode of communication, but somehow it feels like the only way to get this off my chest without turning into a blubbering mess. I'm only assuming you know how to read, but if you don't, well, you've got a couple of smart pals that could help with that. Anyway, let's get to the point before I lose my patience with this pencil and paper.
I always thought you could never understand me. But somehow, you've managed to surprise me by knowing everything about me. To the smallest details, like how I prefer my coffee made and the secret spot where I hide my rings so you, in particular, don't get your sticky paws on them. You even managed to hold onto that one thing I said to you once—about wanting to be like you. How does that stupid brain of yours even remember that?
You're an idiot, but I'm sure I've told you that a thousand times before. Yet here I am, writing like a lovesick puppy to the very person who'd laugh in my face if he knew the truth. But what's a little humiliation when it comes to the blue blur? Right? The truth is, I've had a crush on you for as long as I can remember. It's like a never-ending loop in my head—seeing you save the day, hearing that cocky laugh, feeling that electric rush when we race. It's all so...infatuating. And maybe it's because of our history, or the fact that we're opposites, but something about you just makes me...feel.
I hate how you do this without even trying. Me, the stoic and solitary Shadow, brought to my knees by the mere thought of your smug grin. But here I am, spilling my guts onto these pages like some kind of emotional wreck. It's a good thing you can't hear me, because I'd never live this down if you did.
I highly doubt you can reciprocate these feelings, and that's okay. I mean, why would you? You've got a whole world to save, a bunch of friends who actually like you, and a fan club that spans across dimensions. But for the sake of my sanity, I had to get it out. I can't keep pretending to be the brooding anti-hero when all I want to do is hold your hand and tell you that you're not so bad—for a hedgehog, at least.
I suppose this makes me a coward for not saying it to your face, but that's a risk I'm not willing to take. You see, I've seen the way you look at me, like I'm some kind of puzzle you need to solve. It's like you're waiting for the moment I crack and reveal my true colors, which, spoiler alert, are probably just going to be more black and red. I have secrets, but just because I like you doesn't mean I'm going to spill them all. You're not that special.
The point of this stupid letter is to tell you that I like you. I don't know why, to be honest. Maybe that smile you flash when you beat me in a race or the way your spikes bounce when you run. It's like you're living in a perpetual state of happiness, and it's infectious. Even when I'm grumbling about how much I hate everything, you still find a way to make me crack a smile. And it's not fair. I'm not built to handle this kind of...whatever this is.
But Maria always used to tell me to hold on to what makes me happy, even if it's just a fleeting moment. So here I am, holding onto this feeling, hoping it'll be more than just a fleeting moment. Maybe I'm delusional, but I can't shake the thought that we could be something more than just rivals. That maybe you feel the same way.
I expect you to laugh at this and not take it seriously, as you do everything else. But let's pretend for a moment that you do. What then, Sonic? Would you run away from me? Maybe, maybe not. But I'd like to think you'd at least acknowledge it—that you'd look at me with those piercing green eyes and maybe, just maybe, see that I'm not the heartless monster everyone thinks I am.
You're different. You must know that by now. Annoyingly optimistic and oblivious to everything but your own goals. Yet somehow, you've managed to wiggle your way into my heart. It's like you have some kind of homing device for emotional landmines, and you've stepped right on the one I've been trying to avoid my whole life. But, as much as it pains me to admit, I don't hate it.
Do you recall that time you had me over to watch some movie I really didn't enjoy but sat through because I knew you'd be there? That was the first time I realized I could tolerate you for longer than five minutes without wanting to throw you into a pit of lava. The way your laugh echoed through the room, how your eyes lit up when you talked about something that excited you, it was all so...human. I've never felt more like a robot in my life, trying to understand the complexities of your emotions. I was built for war and destruction, yet here I am, swooning over a hedgehog who can't sit still for more than ten seconds.
The day that I met you, the world had just spit me out like a rotten fruit. You looked at me and didn't see the weapon that I was. You saw a friend—maybe even a little bit of yourself. And for once, I didn't feel like the outcast that everyone feared. You made me feel like maybe, just maybe, I could be a hero too. But I was too stubborn to let it show. I had to be the cool, mysterious one. The one who didn't need anyone. But you saw me for me, Sonic. And that's what makes this whole situation even more pathetic.
I can vividly remember that one time you begged me to teach you how to skate like I do. It was like watching a tornado trying to glide on roller skates—utter chaos. It was embarrassing for you, sure, but the way you kept getting back up, with a grin on your face, it was something. Something that made me feel...less lonely. Less like the monster I was created to be. And every time you stumbled, I found myself reaching out to catch you, not because I felt pity, but because I didn't want the moment to end. Or the time I was swallowed in my misery for Maria and you came to my room and just went on and on about your adventures in the city. I didn't want to listen, but you didn't care. You talked and talked until I felt...better? Or somewhat better. Or the time we adopted that little Chao that had mistook me for its mother, and you were so eager for us to be its parents. It was ridiculous, but the way you looked at me, with those hopeful eyes, I couldn't say no.
And I did lie to you that time you made me try a chili dog, saying I was uncultured for not liking it. I told you it was delicious...but really, I felt like throwing up. I'm not apologizing for it. Yet, I didn't want to disappoint you. Because somehow, your approval had started to matter. Maybe it was because no one else saw past the surface, or maybe it was because I knew deep down that you didn't care if I liked chili dogs or not—you just wanted me to experience something new. To live a little. And that was more than anyone had ever given me before.
Don't go spewing all of this to your little friends, okay? I don't need Knuckles teasing me for eternity or Tails trying to play Cupid with his inventions. This is between us. Or, well, it's not even between us since you're not actually here. But you know what I mean. I...adore you, yet I don't want anyone else to know. I can't have them looking at me with those pitying glances or treating me differently. I need to keep my edge. It's all I've got.
I still think you're stupid for always running headfirst into danger without a plan, but I admire it too. You've got a heart made of pure gold, Sonic, even if it is buried under that smug exterior. And maybe, I'd like to explore what it's like to be a part of that world you live in—where the sun is always shining and the air is filled with the scent of adventure. To not be feared, but liked. To not be the shadow, but to stand in the light. Ugh, that sounded way too mushy, even for me. But I really would like to know what it's like to hold your hand, to hear you laugh without the sound of explosions in the background, to just...be with you.
Don't think this is some love confession or a cry for help. It's just me acknowledging the ridiculousness of my own heart. You're a moron, for crying out loud, and here I am, a being created for war, confessing my feelings like a teenager in a melodrama. But you know what? I don't care. Because maybe you'll read this and understand. Maybe you'll get a glimpse of the mess that's going on in my head—a place no one else has ever cared to look.
I've watched you from afar for so long, Sonic. Your boundless energy and endless optimism are like a siren's call, luring me into a world I never thought I could be a part of. But every time I start to feel like I belong, reality crashes down, reminding me of who and what I am. The Ultimate Lifeform. The Shadow of your existence. The one who's always there but never truly seen. But when we're together, racing side by side, I feel like I can shed that heavy cloak of darkness and just be...me.
But what is me? A copy, a weapon, a rival? Or is there more to Shadow than what everyone sees on the surface? Can I be more than just a shadow? Can I be...loved? It's a concept that's so foreign to me, yet every time I'm with you, it feels like it's the most natural thing in the world. And that scares me. Because if I let myself believe that, then what happens when you find out the truth? The real truth, not the one I've constructed to keep people at bay. The one where I'm not just a hero with a tragic backstory, but a monster with a heart that's been torn to shreds.
Maria was all I had, but I lost her. What if, the second I get attached to you, the same happens? Can you imagine the destruction I'd cause then? It's not just me I'd be dragging down, but the whole world with me. Maybe that's why I've held back, why I've kept you at arm's length. But it's getting harder, Sonic. Every time you save the day, every time you make me laugh, every time you touch me, it's like you're carving out a piece of the ice around my heart and leaving a warmth in its place. It's terrifying, but it's also...comforting.
This pencil is irritating me, so let me cut to the chase. If, by some miracle, you do feel something for me, I'd like to know. Maybe we could, I don't know, go on a date or something? Just the two of us, no rings to save, no Eggman to thwart, no existential crises to deal with. Just a simple day out. It doesn't have to be grand. We could just grab some chili dogs—though I'm never eating one again—and go to the park. Or maybe we could visit that place where we had our first race, the one before you knew who I was. Before the world painted us as enemies.
I don't love you...I like you. There has to be a difference, right? I mean, love is for those sappy romance comics that Rose reads. This isn't love. It's just a weird kind of like. But if it is love, I guess I'm in uncharted waters here. I don't do love. I don't even know if I'm capable of it. But I can't help the way my heart races when you're near, or how I feel when you win a race and I'm stuck in second place. It's like a knife to the chest, but a knife made of pure lightning. And it doesn't hurt, it just...electrifies me.
I need to stop writing, my damn hand is cramping up, but there's one last thing I need to say before I seal this envelope with all the dignity I can muster. I know what you're thinking—what's the point of all this? Why bother with the brooding Shadow when you have a whole cast of eager admirers? Well, I don't know. Maybe I'm just tired of being the side character in everyone else's story. Maybe I want to be the hero for once. But the only way I can do that is if you know the truth. If you understand that I'm more than just a shadow, that I have feelings, that I'm...human. Well, close enough to one.
Take this however you want, Faker. Throw it away, laugh at it, or keep it as a trophy. It doesn't matter to me. But just know that I've said it. The mask is off, the walls are down, and I'm laying it all out there for you to see. Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not is entirely up to you. But remember, I've been watching you from the sidelines for years, and I've learned one thing from all those battles and adventures: the bravest thing you can do is face your fears.
Or just not be a wimp in the first place.
Sincerely...no, not sincerely, because that's not who we are, right? We're rivals, not lovebirds.
You know what....
Love, Shadow.
No...just Shadow.
From Shadow.
Sonic smiled, his tail wagging.

Sonadow one shot number #25: Late Night
Sonic hummed to himself as he walked into his apartment, swinging his keys around his finger. The door swung open with a familiar creak, and he stepped into the comforting embrace of his own space. The smell of last night's pizza still lingered faintly in the air, but it was overpowered by the scent of rain-soaked earth that had followed him in. He tossed his coat over the arm of the couch, the water droplets leaving dark spots on the fabric.
The moon sent a soft, gentle glow through the kitchen window, displaying the mess he had been pretending didn't exist since this morning. Dirty dishes towered in the sink, a mountain of them, a reminder of his solo dinner party for one. The fridge hummed a low, sad song of emptiness. He hadn't done groceries in a while. Sonic sighed, his stomach rumbling a protest at the sight. He'd have to settle for the leftover pizza again. He walked over to the counter and grabbed a plate, double checking to make sure it was clean, and sliced off a generous piece. The cheese stretched out like a rubber band before snapping back into place with a satisfying sound.
The living area was no better than the kitchen. His favorite blue couch, which had seen better days, was buried under a sea of game controllers, comic books, and a week's worth of discarded clothing. Sonic stepped over a pile of laundry, feeling the soft squish of a forgotten sock under his shoe. He flipped on the TV with the remote, letting the blue light wash over the room as he sank into the couch, plate in hand. The local news was on, something about a string of burglaries in the neighborhood. He took a bite of the pizza, the cheese sticking to the roof of his mouth.
The doorbell rang, and he froze. Should I get it? It's late. Maybe it's a neighbor who needs help with something? Sonic's curiosity got the better of him. He wiped his mouth with the back of his gloved hand and headed towards the door, plate still in hand. Peering through the peephole, he saw...no one? That's odd. He looked around, but the hallway was empty.
Why did I forget that pranks exist? Sonic thought to himself as he shuffled back to the living room.
"Sonic."
Sonic screamed, jumping out of his skin. He flung his plate out of pure fear, sending the pizza flying across the room where it splattered against the wall. His heart pounded in his chest like a drum.
None other than Shadow stood in his living room, his red eyes glowing in the darkness of the room.
"SHADOW?! How did you get in here? What the frick are you doing here?!"
"You left your window open," Shadow said matter-of-factly. "You should be more careful."
Sonic blinked. "I know I should close my window, but you can't just break into people's houses!"
"It's not breaking in if you didn't lock it," Shadow said, taking a step forward. "This place is filthy. I can assume you have an entire new ecosystem living inside your walls."
"It's not that bad," Sonic said defensively, though the pizza slowly making its way down the wall begged to differ. "How did you even know where I lived?"
"I followed you." Shadow said, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
Sonic blinked. "You followed me to my apartment to jumpscare me?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"I wanted to see you."
"....are you drunk, Shads?"
Shadow hesitated for a few seconds too long before scoffing dramatically. "The Ultimate Life Form does not-"
"How many fingers am I holding up right now?"
Shadow squinted. "....six."
"Trick question! You're drunk!"
Shadow looked almost offended before suddenly hyperfocusing on something on the couch. He leaned over, grabbing a single glove that had been abandoned there. He stared at it for a few seconds, as if he didn't know what to do with it. His eyes flickered between Sonic and the glove.
"....I like your hands."
Sonic flushed, feeling his cheeks turn pink. "Uh...thanks, Shads. You want to sit down?"
"Do you have food?"
"Well, I did, before you scared it into the wall. Ask the wall if it was good, I guess."
Shadow frowned, and then turned on his heel towards the kitchen. Sonic followed, curious to see what he was up to. Shadow pulled open the fridge, staring inside like a man lost at sea who had just discovered land. His eyes were wide with awe and confusion. Sonic winced as he watched him reach into the back of the fridge, pulling out an old takeout container.
"If I open this and I see mold, I'm throwing up," Shadow threatened.
"I...can't really promise that," Sonic said awkwardly.
Shadow popped the lid off, and Sonic watched his nose wrinkle in disgust.
"That's gross," Shadow said, slamming the lid back on.
"Okay, so I forgot about one takeout container. What are you going to do about it?"
Shadow huffed, looking around as if trying so hard to find something to occupy his time.
"How many drinks did you have, man? Did Rouge get you drunk?"
"Rouge has a higher tolerance than I do," Shadow said. "And I've had four. No...five....no, that doesn't sound right."
"Shads, I think you should-"
"Shut up, I'll get there, give me a minute. I know I had more than..." He stared off into space for a solid five seconds. "ten."
"Ten? Dude, how are you not passed out right now?"
"I'm better than most at holding my liquor...however, I am seeing two of you."
Sonic rubbed his eyes. This was definitely the weirdest visit he had ever received. "Are you okay?"
"Yes. I'm fine. I wanted to see you."
Sonic felt his face flush again. "Well...here I am. You've seen me."
Shadow stared at him for a few seconds, then chuckled. "Have you always been this funny?"
"Uh...I like to think so..."
Shadow fell silent, just looking dead in Sonic's eyes. Sonic froze, staring back out of sheer bewilderment. What is he doing? Sonic's heart was racing, unsure if he was about to be complimented or criticized. Or was this a new type of staring contest? Are we about to fight? Is this like a final boss battle in a game where we have to stare each other down before the actual fight begins? I'll stare right back, mostly out of fear.
"Wanna do it?"
Sonic blinked, his brain processing the words.
"Excuse me?"
"Do you want to do it?"
"Repeat that?"
"You. Me. Sex."
Sonic stared at him. The room was quiet, save for the muffled sounds of the news broadcast still playing in the living room. It took every ounce of willpower Sonic had in his body to not laugh. He knew if he did, he would never hear the end of it from Shadow.
"Are you asking me to have sex with you?"
"No, I'm asking if you want to have sex with me. There's a difference."
"Ah yes, thank you. Very kind of you to explain."
"Do you want to?"
"Do...you want to?"
"I believe so."
Sonic tried so hard to keep a straight face, but his mouth was twitching with a smile. "Oh, you believe so?"
"Yes."
"Do you not know?"
"I know."
"Then what's the answer?"
"Yes."
"Yes...to what?"
Shadow suddenly looked confused, his eyes flickering back and forth as if trying to recall the question. Then it clicked in his brain. "Sex. Yes, sex."
"You want to have sex with me. Me. Me, Sonic the Hedgehog. Not Amy, not Rouge-"
"No, not them. I want you."
"Me? Sexually?"
"Yes."
"So you're attracted to me? Romantically?"
".....what was the question?"
"Dear chaos, uh....well, you're drunk, so....technically I shouldn't-"
"Took too long, answer's changed," Shadow said, looking around for another distraction.
"No, no, wait-"
"I'm bored of you now."
"Oh, that's just rude."
Shadow stepped closer until his and Sonic's chests were almost touching. Sonic felt himself flinch, but he didn't move back. His heart was racing. Shadow leaned forward, and for a brief moment, Sonic thought he was going to kiss him. He even mentally and physically prepared himself for it.
Instead, he reached over Sonic's shoulder and grabbed the plate on the counter, and then walked out of the kitchen without a word.
"Shadow!" Sonic called after him, feeling somewhat offended.
Shadow was already eating whatever he had stolen off the plate, chewing loudly as he wandered over to the couch. Sonic followed, watching as Shadow kicked a pile of clothes to the floor to make room for himself. He immediately changed the channel on the TV, flipping through nearly everything before settling on some nature documentary Sonic had saved. It wasn't that he was interested in documentaries, it was just nice background noise while he played games.
"Hey! I was watching that!"
"Not anymore."
"How cruel. I have cable, you know. You don't have to settle for nature documentaries."
"This one's about sharks."
Sonic shrugged, unable to argue with that. He watched as Shadow picked up one of his game controllers, turning it over in his hands before dropping it.
"What are you doing?"
"Entertaining myself."
"Well...I could just put a game on if you want, I got-"
"No."
"You're gonna sit there and do nothing?"
"I'm watching TV."
"You could talk to me. Get to know me a little."
"I already know you," Shadow said, not taking his eyes off the screen. "You're annoying."
Sonic couldn't help but laugh. "I know you're drunk, but that's still a little uncalled for."
"Shh, the sharks are talking."
Sonic only felt a little concerned as he slowly sat down beside Shadow on the couch. He kept silent as Shadow hyperfixated on the sharks swimming across the screen. He looked like a child at the zoo for the first time. Sonic felt his mouth twitch with a smile. The moon reflected off his quills, giving him an almost ethereal glow.
"Hey, Shads?" Sonic asked, scooting closer.
Shadow grunted in response.
"Is it weird that I find this cute?"
"The sharks?"
"Uh, no, not the...not the sharks, Shadow."
"I don't know why you'd find sharks cute. They're deadly, ruthless predators. They have many rows of sharp teeth. They're basically living weapons."
"That's not what I...nevermind. What I'm trying to say is, I think you're cute. Is that weird?"
Shadow was silent for a few seconds. Then he snorted, looking away from Sonic. "You think I'm cute?"
"Yeah," Sonic said softly. "You're very cute."
"You're a moron."
Sonic laughed. "Maybe so. But I mean it. You're adorable. I can't believe I never realized how much I wanted to kiss you."
Shadow suddenly went quiet again, his gaze falling onto the carpeted floor. The TV buzzed quietly in the background. Sonic felt himself blush, realizing what he had said out loud.
"What I mean to say is-"
Shadow's hand pressed against the back of Sonic's neck, pulling him into a sudden, unexpected kiss. Sonic's heart leapt up into his throat, and he couldn't breathe. Shadow's lips were soft, tasting faintly of whiskey and peanuts. His grip was like a vise, almost like he was trying to anchor himself in reality through the connection. Sonic reached up to hold Shadow's face, kissing back just as deeply.
And then Shadow pulled away, turning his attention back to the TV. Sonic blinked, almost feeling hurt.
"What....care to explain?"
"You said you wanted to kiss me. So I did. That's what you wanted, right?"
Sonic stared at him for a few seconds. Then he chuckled. "Okay. Yeah, sure. That's what I wanted."
Shadow smiled at him, just slightly, and then turned back to the TV. Sonic shifted so his back was pressed against the arm of the couch, one leg dangling off the side and the other bent at the knee. He stared at Shadow, watching his eyes flick back and forth across the TV, his ears twitch with interest at every sound. It was oddly endearing, and Sonic found himself wondering if this was all because he was drunk or if he wanted an excuse to visit.
Shadow must have senses that Sonic was staring at him, because he reached over and grabbed Sonic by the face, turning his head to face the TV. "Watch the sharks."
Sonic grinned, reaching up to grab his hand. "You sure do like sharks, huh?"
"They're fascinating creatures."
"Do you want to watch a movie about sharks instead of nature documentaries?"
"No."
"What do you want to do?"
"I want to watch the sharks."
"And to think, just a few minutes ago, you wanted to do me."
Shadow scoffed dramatically. "I am not that easy, hedgehog."
"You're the one who asked me to have sex with you."
"Ssshhh..." Shadow placed his finger to Sonic's lips, shushing him. "Shark talk."
Sonic rolled his eyes, smiling. "You're something else, Shadow."
Shadow ignored him, turning back to the TV. Sonic watched him for a few minutes, finding himself oddly content just to sit there and watch him. The way the TV light flickered across his face, illuminating his features like a spotlight. He watched the way his eyes moved, the way they softened with each new revelation about sharks. How the corners of his mouth twitched with a smile at the thought of these deadly predators. He looked so innocent, so genuine. Sonic had never seen him like this. He had never seen Shadow this relaxed, this calm. Shadow had a talent of always being prepared for any possible situation, any possible fight, any possible danger.
But here he was, on Sonic's couch, watching a nature documentary about sharks with the most adorable expression on his face.
"Hey Shads," Sonic said softly, scooting closer.
"What?" Shadow muttered, not taking his eyes off the screen.
"Can I kiss you again?"
Shadow blinked, looking somewhat surprised by the request. He kept his eyes on the sharks, as if he'd miss something if he turned his head. "Yes.
Sonic leaned forward, pressing his lips against Shadow cheek. Shadow stiffened, his breath hitching in his throat. Sonic felt his heart flutter at the sound.
"Did you like that?" Sonic asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"I did."
"Can I do it again?"
"Yes."
Sonic kissed him again, this time on the corner of his mouth. He could feel Shadow's lips curl into a smile. Sonic smiled back, placing one hand against the back of his neck. He trailed a few soft kisses down Shadow's jaw, feeling the way he shivered under his touch. Shadow turned his head slightly, allowing Sonic better access to his neck. Sonic kissed him there too, kissing the curve of his throat, feeling Shadow's pulse under his lips.
He felt Shadow's hands reach up and grip his arms. He expected him to push away, but instead he pulled him closer, wrapping his arms around Sonic's neck. He buried his face into the crook of his shoulder, sighing softly.
"Are you okay?" Sonic asked, concern washing over him.
"Mhm," Shadow hummed into his shoulder.
Sonic smiled, holding Shadow close to him. He ran his hand down his back, feeling the smooth, silky fur under his glove. He rested his chin on top of Shadow's head, breathing in the scent of rain and peanuts. He smelled like whiskey, which made Sonic laugh. Shadow shifted, moving closer until he was nearly in Sonic's lap.
"You're a cuddler, huh?"
"Mhm."
"Good to know."
Sonic felt Shadow press a kiss to his collarbone, and he shivered.
"Are we doing it now?"
Sonic blinked, not entirely sure what that meant. "Uh...do you want to?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know if you want to have sex?"
"No."
"Well...if you change your mind, just let me know."
"Okay."
Shadow sighed, relaxing into Sonic's chest. Sonic chuckled, reaching over to grab the remote and change the channel, but Shadow slapped his hand away.
"Sharks."
"Dude, you're falling asleep!"
"No I'm not."
"Then sit up and watch the sharks."
"No."
Sonic laughed, shaking his head in amusement. "Okay, fine. You win."
Shadow smiled triumphantly, resting his head against Sonic's shoulder. He yawned, his eyes fluttering shut, a gentle purr rumbling in his chest. Sonic watched as he drifted off, his breathing slowing down as he fell asleep.
"You're lucky you're cute," Sonic murmured, kissing the top of his head.
"Shut up," Shadow mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. "Sharks."
"Yeah yeah, whatever."

Sonadow one shot number #24: Mark my Territory
When animals were in heat, there were a few things they did, like a routine they couldn't break free from. They'd strut around, showing off their furry finery, or they'd let out a call that could be heard for miles. But what Sonic had never seen before was the subtle art of marking territory with a bite. He was just cruising through the forest, minding his own business, when he stumbled upon a peculiar sight. A young doe, her eyes wide and innocent, had a chunk of fur missing from her neck. It looked painful, but she didn't seem bothered at all. Instead, she was watching a buck with a mix of fear and fascination as he approached her, his antlers proudly held high.
That's weird...I didn't know they were kinky, Sonic thought to himself, his curiosity piqued. He decided to stick around and observe, blending into the underbrush to keep a safe distance. The buck grew closer, his steps calculated and purposeful. His nostrils flared, taking in the scent of the doe, and then he did it. He lunged forward and clamped down on the same spot where her fur was missing. The doe flinched but held her ground, her eyes never leaving his. The buck's teeth sunk into her neck, and she let out a soft whimper. It was clear that this was not the first time she'd felt the sting of his bite.
"Whoa..." Sonic whispered, lowering further into the bushes. "Kinky deer? I guess you learn something new every day in the forest."
He watched in fascination as the buck released his grip, leaving behind a fresh set of teeth marks. The doe didn't move away but instead leaned into his touch, almost as if she enjoyed it. The buck licked her neck gently, almost apologetic, before trotting off into the woods. Sonic blinked, tilting his head. Why would she let him do that? And why didn't it seem to bother her? It was like she was wearing his bite marks as a badge of honor.
Well, deers are weird, Sonic thought as he emerged from the bushes, brushing off leaves and twigs from his blue fur. Never seen that before. I bet Tails knows all about it. He's a walking encyclopedia on everything animal. He'd probably say it's part of some mating ritual or something.
So Sonic asked him when he ran into him in their shared base of operations, a small suburban house with a yard that looked like it hadn't seen a lawnmower in weeks. Knuckles was in the front yard lifting weights while Tails sat on the porch steps, typing away on his lap top.
"Tails, I need to borrow your brain for a sec. What's up with those deer in the forest?" Sonic called out as he approached the porch.
"Huh? What do you mean?" Tails looked up from his laptop, his tails twirling.
"Ya know, the ones biting each other's necks. It's like they're playing tag, but with teeth," Sonic explained, tapping his foot. "Super weird."
"Biting...oh! You must be talking about marks!"
"Uh...yeah, sure," Sonic said, tilting his head. "What do you mean by 'marks'?"
Tails chuckled, closing his lap top and setting it aside. "Sonic, it's not as weird as you think. It's actually a very common practice among certain animal species, including deer, to establish dominance or claim territory. It's a way of saying 'this is mine' without resorting to a full-blown battle. The buck was likely leaving his scent to let other bucks know that this doe is under his protection and part of his harem."
Knuckles snorted. "Harem? That's a fancy word for a boyfriend with more than one girlfriend, isn't it?" He paused his workout to join the conversation, wiping sweat from his brow with a grin."More or less," Tails said, nodding. "In the animal kingdom, it's all about survival and passing on genes. The biting is a way to assert authority and secure mates without unnecessary conflict."
"Oooh...yeah, I kinda just thought they were really into neck play or something," Sonic said with a chuckle, his cheeks flushing a bit at his own naivety. Tails just rolled his eyes, his tails fluttering with amusement.
"Close, but no, sorry, bud. Most animals aren't into that kind of kink," Knuckles said with a hearty laugh.
Sonic didn't know why, if you asked him, you'd never get a straight answer, but for some reason he felt like he wanted to do what the deer did...but with Shadow. It wasn't about marking territory or mating, it was more like...like leaving your tag on something so no one else could claim it. And who better to tag than his rival? Sonic was all about spontaneous acts of weirdness, and this one was perfect for him.
So, like any good friend slash rival, Sonic decided to stalk Shadow to learn his schedule and patterns. For several days, he followed Shadow through the city, blending in with the shadows of the alleyways. He knew every path, every clearing, and even which tree had the best acorn crop. Shadow was a creature of habit, and Sonic learned very quickly that he liked routine. His days were predictable, almost boring. He would wake up, go for a run, eat breakfast, meditate, take a nap, then go for another run, read a boring book with no pictures, and go to sleep. It was mind-numbing, and it was only day three of Sonic's stalking that he was already going crazy with boredom. But he stayed strong.
Sonic had no idea where this sudden determination came from for such a ridiculous mission, but he chalked it up to being the Ultimate Life form's rival. It was in his nature to keep up with the pace and not be outdone by anyone, not even by his own mind. If he wanted to mark Shadow with his teeth, he would do it. Even if it meant waiting for an opportunity that might never come. He blamed his ADHD and hyperfocus for this behavior, but there was no going back now.
After a long and tedious day of watching Shadow sit in a field and read a book about rocks, Sonic finally got his chance. It was night time, and Shadow was out for his evening run. It was the perfect time to strike. Sonic waited for Shadow to reach the woods before jumping out from behind a tree, startling the unsuspecting hedgehog.
Shadow slammed his air shoes into the ground to halt himself and narrowed his eyes. "Sonic? What the hell, what do you want?"
Sonic grinned cheekily and leaned against a tree, his arms crossed. "I just wanted to see if you're down to hang. We haven't gotten together to talk in ages."
Shadow snorted, rolling his eyes. "We literally just saw each other yesterday. Get a life."
"Nah, I'm good. How about you? How's your life going? Anything new and exciting?" Sonic asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Shadow glared at him, his ears twitching. Shadow never really expressed his emotions with words, but it was always clear what he was feeling via his ears and tail. Right now, his ears were perked up with interest, but his tail was swaying with agitation. It was obvious that he wanted to run but was trying to be polite.
"My life is fine. Yours?" Shadow asked flatly.
"Same ol', same ol'," Sonic said with a shrug. "I learned something cool the other day."
"Oh, really?"
"Imagine, if you will, dearest Shadow, a buck in the forest biting a doe's neck."
"...what the hell?" Shadow said, shaking his head. "What the hell are you talking about?"
Sonic laughed, walking slow circles around Shadow. "You, my dear, are the little doe, and I am the mighty buck."
"No, I am the ultimate lifeform, you are a blue rodent," Shadow said, his ears flattening.
Sonic ignored him and continued, "He bites her, and it leaves his mark on her. She's like his property, and no one else can have her."
Shadow rolled his eyes. "Why would she let him do that? That's ridiculous."
"Oh, but you see, Shadow, that's the best part. It's not about the pain, it's about the pleasure," Sonic purred, his voice dropping an octave. Shadow's ears twitched as he stepped back, clearly uncomfortable.
"And how do you know this? Are you secretly a deer?" Shadow asked, his eyes narrowed.
"I probably was in a past life, who knows, back to the point at hand," Sonic said with a wink. "I'm going to bite you."
"Uh, no, you aren't."
"Ya, I am."
"I will slap you."
"That's hurtful."
"You touch me, Sonic, and I swear to Chaos, I will end your life," Shadow snarled, his hands clenching into fists.
Sonic grinned. He loved when Shadow got feisty. "It's just a little nibble, Shads. You'll live."
"That's so far from the point that we might as well be in different dimensions." Shadow shook his head. "What's with you? Did you drink a toxic mushroom or something? Why the hell do you want to bite me?"
"Nope, just got ADHD and a weird thing for necks," Sonic said, stepping closer to Shadow, who backed away in response. "Come on, I'm not gonna hurt ya, Shads. I just want to try something new. We're rivals, right? Isn't it in our nature to compete with each other?"
"Biting is a symbol of a lover marking their mate, you idiot," Shadow hissed, his ears flattening against his head.
"Ya, duh, Tails told me."
"And you still want to try and bite me, of all people?"
"Ya, duh, you're the only person I want to try it with."
Shadow's ears flicked as he tilted his head, his eyes narrowing. "...why? You've never expressed interest in me before. What's changed?"
"Nothing," Sonic said with a shrug, leaning against a nearby tree. "I just wanna see what it's like."
"So this is basically a little experiment to see what it's like to mark someone with your teeth? You want to give me a hickey? That's your entire motivation?"
Sonic nodded. "Pretty much. Come on, Shadow, you know me. I'm impulsive and curious. I'm sure you can relate. This is just another weird thing to add to my list of weird things. Like that time I ate a whole onion and didn't cry. Or that time I jumped off a cliff to see if I could land on my feet like a cat."
"I...can't even argue with that logic," Shadow muttered, shaking his head. "Fine, do whatever. But if you bite too hard, I'm kicking you in the crotch."
"Oooh, kinky," Sonic purred, stepping closer to Shadow until they were almost touching. Shadow stood at an intimidating height for a hedgehog, but Sonic was tall enough to look him in the eyes without straining his neck, though he did have to stand on the tips of his toes to do so. He smiled softly as he reached up, gently running his fingers over Shadow's cheek. Shadow leaned into his touch, his eyes fluttering shut.
"You're really warm, Shads. Like a heater," Sonic murmured, his voice low. "Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?"
"Many times," Shadow replied, his cheeks flushing a light red. "You're incredibly sappy. How many people have you seduced with those words?"
"Just you."
"That's a lie."
"It's not, and I'll prove it," Sonic said before leaning forward and kissing Shadow on the lips. It was soft, gentle, almost hesitant. Shadow had never kissed anyone before, so he essentially just stood there awkwardly. Sonic pulled back after a few seconds, his eyes searching Shadow's face for any signs of discomfort.
"Was that okay?" Sonic asked quietly, his fingers still resting on Shadow's cheek.
"It was fine," Shadow said, his face void of emotion. "It wasn't terrible."
"Aww, Shads, I love you too," Sonic laughed, his eyes sparkling. "Do you want more?"
Shadow blinked. "...I think so."
"Can I touch you?"
"...sure."
Sonic nodded, reaching down and gently lifting up Shadow's left arm. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to Shadow's wrist, causing the black hedgehog to shiver. Shadow kept a surprising straight face, which Sonic took as a challenge, for whatever reason. He licked his lips, taking in the scent of Shadow's fur. It smelled like vanilla and sandalwood, a perfect combination. He took a moment to admire the sight of Shadow's exposed neck before pressing another kiss to the base of his palm. Shadow's breath hitched as his ears twitched, but he didn't move away.
"You okay?" Sonic asked, looking up at Shadow through half-lidded eyes.
"Are you going to keep being weird?" Shadow asked, his voice steady.
Sonic grinned, showing off his fangs. "Yes."
Shadow sighed, his ears drooping. "Expected that much."
"I'm totally gonna mark ya as mine now," Sonic purred, his tail wagging like a dog.
"You are by far the strangest person I've ever met, and I've met Robotnik," Shadow said with a shake of his head.
Sonic laughed and nuzzled Shadow's neck, breathing in his scent again. His wet nose brushed against the sensitive skin, causing Shadow to tense up just a smidge, but he didn't make a move to stop Sonic as the blue hedgehog peppered his neck with kisses, licking and nibbling here and there. He pressed himself closer to Shadow, his body flush against the black hedgehog's.
Sonic wasn't the aggressive type, nor did he make a habit of biting things randomly, so his teeth weren't sharp, unlike Shadow's canines. But Sonic was determined to leave a mark on Shadow's neck, so he took a moment to think about the best way to do it without causing too much pain. He went from the right side of his neck to the left side, nipping gently at the soft skin. He started slow, working up to it, making sure he didn't overdo it and break the skin. He wanted this to be pleasant, not painful.
"Oh, for chaos sake, would you just man up and do it already?" Shadow groaned, rolling his eyes. "You're acting like I'm made of glass."
"Well, excuse me for being a gentleman and not wanting to cause you unnecessary pain," Sonic retorted, pulling back slightly. "Fine, you want it rough? You're gonna get it, mister."
"Ooooh, I'm so scared," Shadow deadpanned, crossing his arms. "Come on, just do it already."
Sonic rolled his eyes but returned his focus to Shadow's neck, slowly moving down until he found a suitable spot. He kissed it lightly before he copied what he'd seen the buck do earlier: he opened his mouth and clamped his teeth down, digging in until he tasted blood. Shadow let out a small grunt but otherwise stayed silent as Sonic applied pressure, his ears twitching. Sonic didn't bite hard enough to break the skin, but he did leave behind a noticeable mark in the outline of his mouth, which was his goal. He held the bite for a few seconds before pulling back, admiring his work.
"Ta da~!" Sonic said with a grin, his tail wagging like crazy. "You're marked now, Shads. I own you. Ha ha! How does it feel to be property of Sonic the Hedgehog?"
"You're a dork." Shadow raised his hand and placed it on the spot where Sonic had bit him, feeling the indentations that were still very present. "You have teeth like a cow."
"I resent that statement," Sonic said with a snort, his ears flicking in annoyance. "I'll have you know that my teeth are perfectly normal. Unlike your weird shark teeth."
"Shark teeth? What are you talking about?" Shadow asked, tilting his head.
"You have shark teeth, dude. Like, pointy and super sharp."
"That's an exaggeration."
"No, it's not."
Shadow ran his finger along the bite, tracing it. "So, what, are we dating now?"
Sonic shrugged. "Sure. We can do that."
"Okay, great. I'm going home now," Shadow said as he turned and walked away, leaving Sonic standing there alone.
"Wait, what? That's it? I just marked you, and that's all I get?" Sonic called out, jogging after Shadow.
"What more do you want?"
"Oh, I don't know, maybe a kiss or something? Come on, Shads, give me a break here."
"You bit me, be happy with that," Shadow said, rolling his eyes. "We're rivals, not lovers."
"But ya gotta admit, it was kinda hot," Sonic purred, nudging Shadow playfully.
Shadow stopped walking and turned to face Sonic, his expression unreadable. "You really are a pain in the ass."
"Love you too, Shads," Sonic said with a wink.
A bite to symbol affection...how did that even work? Shadow thought, his neck throbbing gently. But as he felt the phantom pressure of Sonic's teeth on his skin, a strange warmth spread through him. He glanced over his shoulder, watching Sonic jog up to him with that infectious grin plastered on his face. He had always associated biting with aggression, but this was...different. It was intimate in a way he had never expected from the blue hedgehog. And actually allowing it? That was something new entirely.
He placed his hand on the mark again, feeling the warmth that lingered there. It was strange, but it didn't repulse him as he had initially thought it would. It was almost...comforting, like a big sign on him that said "MINE".
"You know what?" He said, stopping mid-step. "I, too, would like to partake in this ritual."
Sonic blinked, his eyes widening. "Wait, what? You wanna bite me?"
"Yes, I do."
"Oh....well, you see...the thing is...uh...I'm chronically ticklish and therefore cannot be touched without breaking out in hysterical laughter," Sonic said, his ears flicking nervously. "So, ya know, no thanks. I'd rather keep my dignity."
"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard, and I've heard you talk for hours," Shadow snorted, crossing his arms. "Come here, you coward."
"Nah, I'm good. I think I hear Ames calling me anyway."
"I heard nothing."
"Then you're...deaf, I dunno."
"Come here."
"What's that, Amy? You want me to come home?"
"I'm going to murder you."
"That's great, Ames. Be home soon."
"Sonic, don't you dare run away from me right now."
"I'm sorry, babe, you're breaking up! Can't hear you!"
"Ogilvie Maurice Hedgehog, you come here this instant."
Sonic froze like a child being caught doing something naughty. He slowly turned to face Shadow, his cheeks flushed. "Excuse me, good sir? Did you just full dead-name me? What the fudge? I'm gonna have to fight you now. It's law."
"Oh, please, if I had a dollar for every time you claimed we had to fight, I'd be rich," Shadow said with a roll of his eyes.
"How'd you even find out my old name, anyway?"
"Resources."
"Cryptic bastard."
Shadow pointed to the spot in front of him in perfect angry-mother fashion. "Get over here."
Sonic gulped and shuffled over to Shadow in defeat. "This is an abuse of power. I'm going to tell your manager."
"My manager is an 18 year old bat who flirts more than she breathes."
"Still, she should know how you treat me. This is harassment."
"You bit me first, you hypocrite."
"You didn't tell me not to, so it doesn't count."
"That's the stupidest logic I've ever heard."
"Yeah, well, that's how my brain works, so deal with it."
"For Chaos sake...just...here." Shadow sighed before grabbing Sonic by the shoulders and pulling him closer until they were inches apart. He looked down at the blue hedgehog like a predator finally cornering its prey. His red eyes flashed dangerously as he leaned in, his breath tickling Sonic's ear.
"Are you scared?" He whispered, his voice low and husky. "Do you think I'm going to hurt you?"
"Nope," Sonic replied, his voice shaking ever so slightly. "I trust you...I think...a little bit...maybe."
Shadow laughed softly before pressing a gentle kiss to Sonic's forehead. "Relax. It won't hurt."
"It's not that, I just...I dunno...I'm nervous?" Sonic admitted, his ears drooping. "It feels weird to be on the receiving end."
"Oh, where did all that attractive confidence go?" Shadow teased, nuzzling Sonic's nose gently. "You seemed so eager to bite me earlier."
"Yeah, well...duh, I had the upper hand. Now you're...ya know...big and scary."
"I thought you liked it when I'm scary."
"Well, yeah, but not when you're using it against me!"
Shadow smirked before tilting Sonic's chin up with his hand, exposing his neck like a sacrifice. "Then let me take over. Just relax."
Sonic took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. "Just so you know, I will laugh and squirm like hell."
"I'll keep that in mind."
Shadow leaned down, his nose brushing against Sonic's neck. He took a moment to breathe in the blue hedgehog's scent, taking it all in. Sonic smelled like chili and fresh grass, an expected combination for him. He licked his lips, his tongue sliding across Sonic's fur, causing the blue hedgehog to shiver and giggle. Shadow had to physically restrain himself from laughing. Sonic was cute when he was nervous.
Shadow placed one hand on Sonic's hip and the other on the back of his head, gently pushing him forward. He pressed another soft kiss to the side of Sonic's neck before opening his mouth and sinking his teeth into the soft flesh. Sonic yelped, his body tensing up, digging his feet into the ground as he tried to remain still. But Shadow held him tight, keeping him in place as his teeth sank deeper. His teeth were far sharper and just slightly longer than Sonic's, so it wasn't surprising when Sonic started to squirm and whimper.
"Oh, gosh, that hurts," Sonic whispered, letting out a small forced chuckle, only to burst into laughter when Shadow moved his hand down to tickle his stomach.
"Quit wiggling," Shadow ordered, pulling back ever so slightly to allow Sonic to catch his breath. "I'm not going to hurt you."
"It hurts!" Sonic whined, pouting. "Your teeth are pointy!"
"Oh, boo hoo. I didn't even bite that hard," Shadow said with a roll of his eyes. "You're like a rabbit. You make little squeaks when you're scared."
"Hey, don't make fun of me!" Sonic huffed, his ears twitching. "I'm sensitive."
"Shut up and deal with it."
Sonic pouted but complied anyway, relaxing in Shadow's grasp. He closed his eyes and allowed Shadow to do whatever he wanted. And what Shadow wanted was to mark him up and down, leaving behind a trail of hickeys and bite marks. Each one hurt more than the last, and Sonic had to bite his own hand to keep from laughing. It was incredibly embarrassing to be so weak when it came to being tickled, but it wasn't like he could help it.
Shadow worked his way up and down Sonic's neck and across his shoulders, leaving behind an array of fresh wounds. Sonic winced every time Shadow bit him, but he never complained out loud. He let out soft whimpers and moans, which only encouraged Shadow to continue. His hands roamed all over Sonic's body, feeling every inch of fur as he bit and sucked on the blue hedgehog's neck. Sonic shivered, his tail wagging like crazy.
"There we go," Shadow murmured, pulling back to admire his work. "I think that'll do for now."
Sonic's quills were puffed up, his cheeks flushed, and his breath heavy. He looked absolutely adorable. Shadow reached out and stroked his cheek with his thumb, causing Sonic's eyes to flutter open.
"That...was...so...embarrassing," Sonic wheezed, his legs shaking. "I'm gonna die."
Shadow chuckled, shaking his head. "You're fine. It didn't even hurt that bad."
"You're one to talk, mister I-Never-Feel-Pain-Ever."
"You exaggerate."
"And you bite like a shark!"
"At least everyone will know who you belong to now, won't they?"
"Oh, it's hardly fair, mine was a small bite, you went to town on me!"
Shadow smirked. "I guess we're just even then."
"How is that even? How the fudge are you even? You're evil," Sonic whined, stomping his foot like a toddler. "Evil, evil hedgehog."
Shadow rolled his eyes before leaning in and kissing Sonic gently on the lips, causing the blue hedgehog's ears to shoot straight up like an excited puppy. He kissed back eagerly, wrapping his arms around Shadow's neck. Shadow pulled him closer, deepening the kiss. It was sweet and slow and perfect. Sonic sighed happily, closing his eyes and melting into Shadow's embrace.
When they finally parted, Sonic was smiling from ear to ear, his tail wagging like a madman. "That...was awesome."
"Oh, now you have a change of heart," Shadow teased, nuzzling Sonic's cheek. "Maybe next time I should mark your face, hm? That way everyone can see who owns you."
Sonic groaned, rolling his eyes. "You are the worst. And I mean that in the best way possible."
"I'm flattered."
"Let me do another one on you, please? I feel bad now," Sonic said, his eyes pleading. "Come on, Shads, I'll be gentle this time."
"No."
"Ah, come on, you can't make me a walking billboard of love and not expect me to return the favor!"
"Yes, I can. Now stop talking."
"But Shadow..."
"If you say another word, I'm going to make you scream."
"Kinky."
"I will strangle you."
"Please do."
"Insults turn you on? Really? What a kink."
"I can't help it, you're just so good at it."
"I swear to Chaos."
"Shaaaaads, pleeeease?"
"Fine. Do it."
"Ha, you're so easy. I love that about you."
Shadow glared at Sonic, his ears flattening against his head. "You are the absolute worst."
"Love ya too, babe."
"Don't call me babe."
"Aww, but it fits so well!"
"I hate you so much."
"Yeah, yeah, love you too, ya big baby," Sonic said with a laugh, nuzzling Shadow's cheek. "Now, let me give you my own personal mark."
"Fine, but if you dare try and tickle me, I will kill you," Shadow grumbled, crossing his arms. "So help me, I will."
"Wouldn't dream of it," Sonic said before pressing a quick peck to Shadow's lips. He then pulled back and began examining Shadow's neck for the perfect place to bite.
By the next day, both hedgehogs were sporting matching neck decorations - a series of bruises and teeth marks that were impossible to hide. Sonic looked like he had been in a battle with a feral animal, while Shadow's neck was a messy yet calculated canvas of love bites from his blue rival. They had decided to keep it a secret from their friends, mostly because they didn't want to explain why they had decided to start biting each other like lovesick teenagers in the middle of the forest at night.
They just wouldn't understand.

Sonadow one shot number #23: Shower
"And then there was this big explosion and I barely made it out alive, but I'm awesome, so I guess it was really no biggie." Sonic said, twirling little strands of Shadow's chest fluff in his fingers as he lay atop him, swinging his legs idly. "Oh, and Eggman is so cranky, like, he just can't get over that fact that I'm just way better than him."
Shadow grunted and stroked Sonic's quills as he lay back and let the hero recount all of his little adventures while they were apart, enjoying the pleasant warmth that came from their bodies resting together. He could feel Sonic's heart thumping away in his chest, and the sound of his voice was enough to drown out the rest of the world.
"So yeah, then I jumped out the window and landed right in front of Tails. Oh, but don't worry, I didn't forget you! I just had a bunch of stuff come up, plus I was worried that Eggman might want to try and attack if I showed my face around here too much, but it's all good, you know? Amy baked a bunch of super delicious cookies and Cream gave me some flowers and we all ate together and it was really fun."
"Nice."
"I missed ya, ya know. You take these super long missions on purpose at this point. Are you trying to make me cry, because it's working!"
"It's just how things are."
"I know, I know...but still. You shoulda been there, I mean, not that I'm saying you have to be there all the time, but you're still my buddy right?"
"Buddy? Sonic, I believe our relationship exceeds mere 'buddy' status." Shadow said, giving Sonic a light pinch on the cheek. "And besides, if I always stayed around here, then I'd never get any missions, and then I wouldn't be able to earn rings."
"Right, right, the ring thing." Sonic chuckled. "But we don't really need rings do we? I mean, yeah, they're great and all, they buy me things, but still."
"Yes, but I enjoy the thrill of it all, the chase, the adventure. It's nice to have a purpose, something to work towards." Shadow explained as he stroked Sonic's quills. "I know you enjoy running around and having adventures all the time, and I like going with you sometimes, but I just need my alone time, you understand?"
"Kinda," Sonic pouted, resting his head against Shadow's chest. "I just wish it didn't take so long, or that you'd at least tell me about what you've been up to. I mean, I know you probably won't tell me all the details because of confidentiality or whatever, but still, a little heads-up would be nice, ya know?"
"Hmmm...I suppose I could tell you some things. I can't give away my mission objectives, but I could at least talk about where I go. How does that sound?"
"Yes, do that! Tell me!" Sonic said, scooting forward to place a kiss on Shadow's muzzle before snuggling back into his chest fluff. "I wanna hear all about it."
"Alright then..." Shadow started, shifting his weight a bit and wrapping an arm around Sonic as he thought about where to begin. "Well, the first mission I did was to this really interesting jungle planet called South Island. It was beautiful there, like something out of a storybook, you would like it there. Places to run around. Rouge and I conducted a lot of recon on this strange artifact that had been uncovered by a team of archeologists, but I'm not supposed to say anything about it."
"Wow, cool!" Sonic said, smiling up at Shadow. "Was it some cool treasure?"
"Yes, something like that." Shadow said. "They had no idea what it was, so they brought us in to investigate. Omega came along as well. It was pretty boring work, just a bunch of sitting around while the archeologists poked the thing with sticks, and then it-"
"Hey, what's that?" Sonic suddenly sat up, staring far too intently at a small scratch on Shadow's right shoulder. "Where did this come from?"
"It's nothing, don't worry about it."
"Nu uh, I see a horrible, gushing wound laid upon the bare flesh of my lover, and I will not stand for this. You were supposed to be careful on your missions, not get hurt!" Sonic said, frowning as he gently traced his finger over the scar. "I'll never forgive whoever did this to you!"
"Oh please, it's just a scratch. That's just what happens when you're out in the field." Shadow said, slapping Sonic's hand away. "Must you always overreact about everything? You're like a little child sometimes."
"You are the worst boyfriend ever, you know that? Always leaving me and coming back all beat up, you're a terrible, terrible person, Shadow the Hedgehog."
"Are you going to sit here and cry or do you want me to continue the story?"
Sonic looked at Shadow for a moment, then sighed and lay back down. "Fine, continue."
"As I was saying, we were sitting there watching the archeologists poke around the artifact when suddenly this massive green lizard bursts out of the ground and starts attacking us. Naturally, Rouge and I were set to kill it, which was an easy feat for us, given our training and extensive skills, but then Omega decided that he was going to be a showoff and-"
"Shadow, stop," Sonic said, holding up his hand. "You're trying to change the subject, but it's not working. I know you too well, and I can tell when you're lying."
"What are you talking about?" Shadow asked, sitting up a bit. "This is the second time you've interrupted me, do you want me to tell this story or not?"
"I do, but I don't want you to lie to me." Sonic said, sitting up and folding his arms. "I can tell something else happened. That scar didn't come from a fight with some giant monster, that's for sure. Something else happened, and I want to know what."
Shadow stared at him for a moment, then sighed and shook his head. "You are focusing on something so insignificant. You're acting like a child again, but if you must know...no, nevermind, it's not worth talking about."
"What, you can't just bring it up and then refuse to tell me. That's not fair! Come on, tell me!"
Shadow groaned and rolled over, pulling the blanket over himself. "It doesn't matter, so why should I have to tell you?"
"Uh, because I'm your significant other, which means I'm super significant and therefore you have to tell me everything!" Sonic said, reaching under the blanket and poking at Shadow's side. "Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me!"
"Fine," Shadow growled, rolling over and fixing Sonic with an annoyed look. "You want to know? Well fine then, I'll tell you. You asked for this."
Sonic paused, staring at Shadow for a moment. "Well, what is it?"
Shadow took a deep breath, and then spoke. "Bandits that inhabited the planet tried to steal the artifact after we set it up for transport across the borders. There were a lot of them, but we fought them off and captured three. They were light work, if I'm being honest. However, I miscalculated one's location and he was able to get behind me. He had a weapon under his cloak, cleverly concealed, and he brandished it and lunged. I moved to dodge that attack and..."
Sonic stared at him, leaning forward. "Aaaand, what? What? Come on, tell me!"
"...and I tripped, are you happy? I, the Ultimate Life Form, the greatest fighter in the galaxy, fell over and landed on my shoulder. Is that what you wanted to hear?" Shadow grumbled, turning away from him. "I was tired, okay? It was late and I wasn't paying attention, that's all. So please, just drop it."
Sonic burst out laughing, flopping over onto his back as he guffawed at the ceiling, kicking his legs around as he laughed and laughed, tears streaming down his face. "Oh my god! You tripped? Really? That's all? Oh man, I can't believe this! This is amazing!"
"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. Get it out of your system." Shadow said, turning away from him and closing his eyes. "It's not that funny."
"Yeah, it is! You've never tripped before. What, did your air shoes malfunction or something?"
"They are the highest-quality military-grade combat boots and they do not malfunction. I simply wasn't paying attention."
"Haha, ooooh, you tripped! Aha, Shadow the Hedgehog tripped and fell on his face!" Sonic laughed.
Shadow grabbed a pillow and smacked Sonic with it, sending him flying off the bed. He hit the floor with a loud thump and a yelp, then sat up, rubbing his head and glaring at Shadow, who just smirked and shrugged.
"Sorry, my hand slipped."
Sonic grinned. "You know you love me."
"Unfortunately." Shadow said, tossing the pillow aside and sitting up. "But yes, I tripped and his knife managed to slice my shoulder. It was hardly deep, just enough to cause some minor bleeding. Omega took care of things after that, but the damage was already done, I had ruined our mission objective and embarrassed myself. You know how it goes."
Sonic stood up and hopped back onto the bed, crawling over to Shadow and wrapping his arms around him. "I'm sorry, but it's okay, I still love you...even if you are flawed."
"You're one to talk about flaws." Shadow said, ruffling Sonic's quills.
"Hey, I may be flawed, but at least I'm not clumsy." Sonic said, kissing Shadow's cheek. "I'm perfect in every other way."
Shadow snorted. "Yeah, whatever you say."
"So, uh, where's this artifact now?"
"We were able to recover it and transport it to G.U.N. for safekeeping, but the bandits got away. We tried to find them, but they fled the planet after that, so there's no real point in chasing them at this point. They'll turn up again sooner or later."
Sonic nodded. "Okay, well I'm glad you didn't get seriously hurt. Maybe you should slow down a bit, you know? I'll wrap ya in bubble wrap, then you'll have to slow down!"
Shadow rolled his eyes. "I've heard enough of this. I'm going to take a shower."
"Can I come with you?"
"You ask every night, when have I ever said yes?" Shadow asked, stepping off the bed and walking towards the door. "Go on, go eat dinner or something, I won't be long."
Sonic sighed and flopped back onto the bed, closing his eyes. "Fine, but you owe me some cuddles after your done."
"Okay, I promise." Shadow said as he stepped out the door, closing it behind him.
Shadow had missions, Sonic was aware. Every other day, it seemed, he would receive an assignment from G.U.N., be gone for several hours or sometimes days, then return home covered in dirt, sweat, and sometimes blood. He rarely spoke about these mystery missions, just giving Sonic a brief overview of where he went and what he did, which Sonic could respect. But tonight was different, because Sonic was feeling needy and touch-starved and just wanted to spend some quality time with his hedgehog counterpart.
Sonic loved attention, but he primarily craved the attention he got from Shadow. Sure, he had friends like Amy and Tails and Knuckles, but Shadow was special to him. Shadow was his first friend, and even though they were rivals and enemies for a long time, their relationship had evolved into something much more intimate. Sonic was a people-pleaser, and Shadow's presence gave him purpose. The very fact that Sonic had even managed to convince Shadow to be in a relationship with him was nothing short of a miracle, and he never took it for granted.
Sonic lay on the bed for a while, staring up at the ceiling as he listened to the shower running in the bathroom down the hall. He closed his eyes and let his mind wander, imagining Shadow standing under the warm water as it washed over his body, his face tilted up towards the ceiling as the water flowed over his features, washing away all the dirt and grime from his mission. He wished he could be in there with him, running his hands over Shadow's muscular form, feeling the water run over their bodies together as they kissed and laughed. But Shadow was a very private person when it came to these things, and Sonic knew that pushing him would only lead to an argument. Shadow hated being crowded for too long, and after a mission, he liked his solitude.
But Sonic was different. The second Shadow got back from his missions, Sonic would be all over him, showering him with love and attention, kissing his face and poking his abs, his little tail wagging like a puppy's. Like a soldier returning home from war, Sonic would gush over him and demand to hear every single detail about his adventure, even though he knew most of it was probably top-secret stuff that he wasn't allowed to know.
Sonic let out a sigh, his ears drooping slightly as the sound of the shower continued. He knew he had to give Shadow his space, but it was hard sometimes. He was used to going on adventures and fighting side by side with his friends, not just waiting around for them to come back and hoping they were okay. But he also knew that Shadow needed this, to be alone with his thoughts, to process whatever he had seen and done on his missions. It was just who he was.
But Sonic was one who just didn't have the ability to sit and do nothing. He needed to be moving, to be doing. So, as the minutes ticked by, he slid off the bed and padded over to the door. He could hear the steady stream of the shower, the occasional grunt or sigh from Shadow as he washed the grime of the day away. The water was steaming up the hallway, making the air thick with the scent of minty soap and wet fur.
Man, he takes forever in there, Sonic thought as he dramatically flopped onto the bed. He glanced at the clock, the neon digits blinking back at him: 8:43 PM.
Ugh, I'm dying of boredom here, Sonic thought, trying to entertain himself by tracing shapes in the comforter with his finger. I'm literally deceased. Gone. Perished.
Sonic waited another five minutes, then quietly crept over to the door and poked his head into the hallway. The bathroom was at the end of the hall, the door slightly cracked open, steam spilling out. Sonic crept forward, pressing his ear to the door to try and see if Shadow was still in there. The water was still running, so he assumed the answer was yes, but he didn't want to take any chances.
Until the door opened to reveal Shadow himself, his quills flattened and damp, water dripping off his spikes. His dark red eyes landed on Sonic, who was caught red-handed with his ear pressed against the wood. "What are you doing?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Ah...nothing! There was a fly...buzzing...yeah, a fly." Sonic stammered, his cheeks turning a rosy shade of pink. "It was driving me nuts, so I thought I'd, uh, check on you."
Shadow looked at him skeptically for a moment before a smirk tugged at the corner of his muzzle. "Sure, a fly. And what, exactly, were you planning to do with this fly?"
"Um...I was gonna tell it to buzz off, obviously," Sonic said, his ears fluttering with embarrassment. "But since I've found the source of the noise, I guess I don't have to now."
Shadow looked him up and down. "Mm hm...what a shame. I was going to invite you to join me, but I guess I-"
"Shut your whore mouth, really?! Yes, yes, I want to come with you!" Sonic squealed, grabbing Shadow's hand and yanking him inside the bathroom.
"Did you just call me a whore out of excitement? Because that is kind of insulting." Shadow said, closing the door behind them.
"What, I didn't say anything like that. Now come on, let's get in the shower, I'm dying over here!" Sonic aggressively kicked his shoes off as if they had personally wronged him, then tugged his socks off, tossing them aside. "Come on, come on! You're moving too slow."
"You're acting like a child again, but fine." Shadow said, watching as Sonic stripped down with reckless abandon. "Just be careful not to slip and fall or something, the floor is wet."
"Oh yeah, you're one to talk about falling, Mr. Clumsypants."
"You get one free pass to make fun of me for tripping, and you wasted it." Shadow said, stepping into the shower and letting out a sigh as the warm water cascaded down his body again.
Sonic giggled like a child as he climbed into the shower, a wide grin on his face as he grabbed Shadow and pulled him close, kissing him passionately. Shadow grunted in surprise, but quickly melted into the kiss, wrapping his arms around Sonic's waist. He could feel the hedgehog's hands on his back, tracing the outline of his muscles as they deepened the kiss. Shadow tasted like mint, his mouth warm and inviting, and Sonic couldn't help but smile against his lips, enjoying the contact. He wouldn't go as far as to say that he was touch-starved, but being away from Shadow for so long had been difficult for him, and having the chance to be with him like this again was a welcome relief.
The sound of water echoed through the bathroom as they kissed, the steam surrounding them, filling the room with warmth and comfort. Sonic's heart pounded in his chest, his head spinning with excitement and joy. It felt so good to be like this again, to be with Shadow. To be able to hold him close and kiss him, to feel his warmth and hear his voice. It was almost too much for Sonic to handle, but he was determined to enjoy every moment of it.
Shadow's hands found their way to Sonic's hips, gently squeezing them as he pulled him closer, their bodies pressed together. The kiss became more heated, their tongues exploring each other's mouths as they tasted each other. Sonic moaned softly, his fingers digging into Shadow's shoulders. He could feel Shadow's growing desire, the hardness of his body as he pressed against him, his breath hot against his skin.
Sonic broke the kiss and grinned up at Shadow, his eyes half-lidded as he gazed up at him. "Miss me?"
"Don't get cocky," Shadow murmured, flicking Sonic's nose.
"I bet ya think about me all the time, huh? Just pining away in that giant, empty bed of yours," Sonic teased, pressing their bodies together.
"You are just so full of yourself," Shadow chuckled, shaking his head. "But...of course, I suppose I did miss you a little bit."
"Awwwww-"
"Don't start."

My Original Character from an upcoming novel reboot

This is an original character of mine that I created in high school named Jester. She’s from a novel I started on Wattpad named Realm of Token. I’m planning on rebirthing the story from my new Wattpad account, so that required new character designs and sketches!
Anyway, meet Jester! She’s a Demi-Demon, you can expect more from here on here.
This was just a flat color sketch, so there’s no shading at the moment

Sonadow one shot number #22: Wanna See a Magic Trick?
"Hey, Shadow, you gotta see this new magic trick I learned." Sonic said as he plopped down beside the dark hedgehog.
Shadow ignored him and continued to flip through the magazine he was reading. He was not at all interested in magic, especially when it came to Sonic. The odds of him pulling something off without a hitch were slim, and the blue blur seemed to find new ways to fail and embarrass himself in front of people every day.
The last time Sonic had done magic, he had nearly burned the house down with a flaming card trick. Rouge had yelled at him for hours after that, and had told him to never do it again. However, as always, Sonic had completely ignored her and kept practicing anyways, just with a fire extinguisher at his side to make sure he wouldn't ruin anything.
But Sonic always had more energy than the average person, so he needed new outlets for it every now and then. Shadow had no idea what had started Sonic's obsession with magic in the first place, but it didn't matter now. He was determined to do a trick, whether Shadow wanted to watch or not.
"I'm serious. I've been practicing this one all week and I think it's going to turn out great!" Sonic said. He scooted closer to Shadow and turned to face him. "Pretty please with a bunch of cherries on top? You know you wanna see it."
Shadow looked up from the magazine for a few seconds and made eye contact with Sonic, who was giving him the saddest puppy dog eyes he could muster. With a sigh, Shadow rolled his eyes and set the magazine aside. If he didn't agree, Sonic would keep pestering him until he did.
"Fine, let's see it." He said with a huff. "But if you burn anything, I'll have no sympathy for you."
Sonic grinned. "This trick doesn't even involve fire. Give me your hand."
"My hand? What for- oh no. No. No, no, no, I am not helping you do this." Shadow said, realizing what was about to happen.
"Oh, come on! It'll be fine. It'll only take like five minutes and then I'll stop bothering you."
"No. Go do it with Knuckles or something."
"Knuckles is on Angel Island."
"So go to Angel Island."
"You already said I could do the trick. Don't back out now." Sonic complained.
"I never said yes." Shadow protested. He just knew he'd be the receiving end of the failure that was sure to follow.
"Yeah you did. You gave me that look you always give when you don't want to say no to me. Remember? You were all like-" Sonic pouted and pretended to be uninterested. "Ugh, I guess you can show me. But I don't really care either way."
"I never said that!"
"You did too! Keep in mind that I can argue with ya all day, but it's not gonna change anything."
"And yet, here we are." Shadow said, raising an eyebrow.
"Yep! So just give me your hand and let's get this over with. The sooner you help me, the sooner you won't have to look at my adorable face anymore."
With a sigh, Shadow reluctantly gave Sonic his hand, which was quickly grabbed by the blue hedgehog. But when Sonic reached into his quills and pulled out a pair of handcuffs, Shadow immediately changed his mind and tried to pull away. However, Sonic had already chained them together and was now holding the key triumphantly in his other hand.
"What the hell is that for?" Shadow demanded, his eyes widening in shock.
"Relax. It's part of the trick."
"What kind of trick involves handcuffs?"
"A kinky trick."
"What?"
"What? Nevermind, that's not important. You just gotta trust me. Okay?"
Shadow shook his head and tried to snatch the key out of Sonic's hand, but the blue hedgehog moved it out of his reach and gave him a disapproving look.
"I don't trust you. Especially when it comes to handcuffs." Shadow said, eyeing the handcuffs wearily. They looked weak enough that he could snap them off easily. Although, he didn't want to risk breaking one of his wrists while trying.
"Trust me, they're not gonna break. I tried. And even if they do, it's no big deal. I'll get you out of them in a jiffy."
"No big deal? I'm going to kill you if you don't take these off."
"Let the magic do its thing, Shads. Now, watch this-" Sonic held up the key between two of his fingers. "I'm going to make this key disappear."
Shadow watched as Sonic waved his hands over the key for a few seconds, then he clenched his fist and opened it again. The key was gone.
"Huh. Where'd it go?" Sonic asked, looking down at his hand like it was some sort of illusion.
"I'm five seconds away from strangling you if you don't get us out of these things right now." Shadow growled, glaring daggers at Sonic.
"No need to get so aggressive. I just need to find that key. You wouldn't happen to have any idea where it went, would ya?"
"You know damn well where it went. Give me it and take these things off before I do something I might regret."
"What? I don't have it."
"Yes you do! Give me the damn key!" Shadow snapped, pouncing on Sonic and sending both of them crashing onto the floor.
"Hey! Knock it off!" Sonic said, pushing him off.
"Give me the key." Shadow demanded, trying to feel Sonic's body for where he could have hid it.
"It's magic, I can find it, just give me a second! AH! Watch the quills! That tickles!" Sonic squeaked, squirming away from Shadow's hands as they searched for the key.
"Then hurry up and get the key out!"
"It's magic, it's not supposed to happen in two seconds! Just wait!"
"No, give me the key now."
"Stop it! You cannot rush a magician."
"You can when you handcuffed them together!"
"Yeah, but you're only supposed to yell at me after the trick is over! Not during!"
"Well, you were taking too long."
"It's magic, it doesn't work if you rush it!"
"Sonic, I swear to Chaos, if you don't-"
"Got it!" Sonic said, pulling the key out from behind Shadow's ear.
"My ear?! You hid it behind my ear?!" Shadow asked in disbelief.
"You've never seen a magic trick before, have you?" Sonic chuckled, then a mischievous smile grew on his face. "Now...do I unlock you or not?"
"What do you think?"
"That depends. What will you do to me if I unlock you?"
Shadow thought for a moment. He wanted to give Sonic a piece of his mind, but the blue hedgehog seemed to enjoy pissing people off, so that would only be an invitation for him to do it again. Him and Shadow were in interesting combination. Sonic loved making Shadow mad because it was so easy to do, and Shadow loved making Sonic mad because he couldn't handle being mad for very long. But that didn't stop the two from getting into screaming matches on a regular basis.
"I won't kill you." Shadow finally replied.
"That's it?" Sonic asked, raising an eyebrow.
"For now."
"Hmmm. I dunno. I think this key might be the wrong one. Let me check-" Sonic reached into his quills and pulled out another key. "Nope. Wrong one."
He pulled out yet another key. "Nope, wrong again. Maybe this one."
"Oh my god." Shadow groaned. "If you don't stop playing around right now, I'm going to-"
"Relax, I'm just teasing ya. I'll unlock ya, it's this key right...uh....here?"
Sonic's smile faded as he tried the key, only for it not to fit. He tried it again, and then again. But it wasn't working.
"What the fudge is wrong with this thing? It won't go in!" Sonic said, shaking the handcuffs in frustration.
"You've got to be kidding me."
"I'm serious!"
Shadow yanked his hand, which pulled Sonic's up with it, their faces inches apart. "Take them off right now." He demanded.
"I'm trying! They're not coming off! I can't believe this."
"You're lying. This is a trick isn't it? You're tricking me."
"What? No! It's the real deal. I actually lost the key. It must have fell down somewhere. Don't worry, I'll find it." He began to frantically search his quills and the floor.
"You're an idiot."
"I am not!"
"Yes you are. You lost the damn key."
"I did not! The magician never loses anything. It's like a rule or something!"
"Stop calling yourself a magician. You're not. And if you do, I'll kick your ass."
"Don't be so mean. I'm trying my best."
"You're doing a terrible job."
"You're just mad because I cuffed us together."
"Yes. Yes I am." Shadow said through gritted teeth. "Get these things off of me now, or I will make your life hell."
Sonic moved to stand up, apparently forgetting they were cuffed together, so he ended up pulling Shadow onto the floor with him.
"Hey! Get up!" Sonic said, trying to push the dark hedgehog off of him.
"Not until you take these things off." Shadow growled, holding Sonic down by the wrists.
"I can't get up if you're laying on me!" Sonic protested. "I can't breathe!"
"Good, stop breathing."
"You wouldn't kill me!"
"Try me."
"Shadow, come on, don't be a jerk."
"This is all your fault. Now, take them off!"
"I'm trying, but you're making it really difficult! Just give me a second."
"You've had more than a second. Take them off!"
"Oh, sure, I'll just ask them super nicely and they might come off! How could I have not thought of that? It's obviously that easy to take them off."
Shadow glared at him and opened his mouth to snap back when he realized how close they were. He had Sonic's arms pinned down on the sides of his head and was laying directly on top of him. If Shadow moved any closer, their noses would bump. There was a visible blush on Sonic's face, which made Shadow start blushing as well. Sonic was smaller than Shadow in terms of body size, so he felt like he was crushing the blue hedgehog.
"Hi." Sonic said with a grin. "Enjoying yourself?"
"Did you lose this key on purpose?" Shadow asked, ignoring Sonic's question.
"No! I told you, it must have fallen down somewhere. Stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like I did something wrong. It's not my fault the key didn't work."
"So you're saying you did nothing wrong?"
"Yes."
"Then take the damn handcuffs off."
"...I can't."
"So we're stuck like this until you get a replacement key, is that right?"
"Kinda? Sorry...I really thought this would work."
"You are the worst magician ever."
"Hey, that's not very nice. I'll get them off. Somehow. I just need some time."
"How much time?" Shadow asked, sitting up and pulling Sonic with him.
"A few days maybe? I'm not sure yet."
"A few days?! No! I am not waiting a few days for you to get us out of these things."
"We can take this time to bond, ya know? Get to know each other a little better. You should be happy about it. This is an opportunity for you to do whatever you want with me, and I can't stop you because I don't have any way of getting out of these things."
"Whatever I want? What do you expect me to do?"
"Well, I've heard handcuffs are romantic."
Shadow rolled his eyes. "I'd rather choke myself to death than sleep with you."
"Wow, rude! I'm not that bad. You'd probably enjoy yourself. Just think about it."
"There is no way I'm sleeping with you while we're handcuffed together."
"Why not?"
"I have standards. And I will not allow you to ruin them for me."
"That's not true. I bet you're into kinky stuff."
"Like you have any room to talk."
"I do not! I'm totally innocent."
"You're like the complete opposite of innocent. You have the dirtiest mind I have ever seen."
"I do not!"
"I literally bent over to pick something up and you, all the way across the room, whistled. At me. Like I was some dog. The worst part is you didn't even realize you did it."
Sonic blushed. "Yeah, well...you're...um..."
"Finish your sentence." Shadow demanded.
"No."
"Say what you were going to say."
"No! You'll get mad at me again!"
"I'm going to get mad at you if you don't finish it."
"Fine....this is an awkward time for a confession, but...I kinda like making you mad because I think you're cute when you're angry. I know, it's weird, but I can't help it."
"Seriously? That's it? I thought you were going to say something serious. Why would that make me mad?"
"Because it's embarrassing and you'd probably yell at me for thinking that way about you."
"I was already aware that you enjoy making me angry. Am I that attractive?"
"Well, duh, but it's like a mysterious kind of attraction." Sonic said, trying to shrug off his embarrassment. "Lika, I don't know, your intensity or something. It's like watching a storm. You're all powerful and unpredictable and stuff."
"You're comparing me to a storm? How romantic, Sonic." Shadow said, his voice dripping woth sarcasm.
"Well, its kinds true. You know, the whole brooding thing you have going on. It's like a challenge to cheer you up or something. Plus, your biceps flex when you're mad. It's pretty hot." Sonic said, his cheeks now a deeper shade of pink.
Shadow blinked. He hadn't expected that kind of confession, especially not from Sonic. He stared at the blue hedgehog, who was now studiously examining the handcuffs as if he could will them open with his gaze alone. "What the hell am I supposed to say to that?" Shadow muttered, mostly to himself.
"Uh, how about a thank you for the wonderful compliment?" Sonic suggested, not looking up from the handcuffs.
Shadow scoffed. "You really think that's going to work?"
Sonic finally looked up, meeting Shadow's gaze. "Well, it's worth a shot. Besides, you do have a point. Being stuck together is going to be a real hassle. Maybe we should make the best of it?"
"Like you admitting that this was on purpose because you have some sort of weird crush on me is going to make me want to spend the next few days attached to you?" Shadow said, his voice a mix of disbelief and annoyance.
"It wasn't entirely on purpose..." Sonic said, slowly working his free hand out of Shadow's grip, interlacing their fingers together. "I really did want to try a cool new trick, but I'll admit, the idea of us being stuck together did make me a bit happy. Not, like, happy-happy, but like, happy in an awkward, weird kind of way. Like finding a forgotten piece of chocolate at the bottom of your bag when you're craving something sweet, ya know?"
"Okay..." Shadow said, his voice trailing off. He supposed he should have seen this coming at some point. The way Sonic was extra clingy and extra annoying today was definitely a clue. But still, he had to admit, the situation was kind of funny in a twisted way. Confessing love while cuffed together? This was definitely one for the books.
Do I share Sonic's feelings? Shadow thought, gazing down into those emerald eyes that were currently avoiding his own. The thought had never really crossed his mind before, but now that it was out in the open, it was like a door had been pushed ajar and he couldn't ignore it. Sonic was a pain, sure, but... he had his moments. The way he made him laugh, even when he didn't want to. The way he could be so earnest and passionate about the stupidest things. It was endearing, in a weird sort of way. His endless pools of energy could be annoying, but also surprisingly comforting at times.
Shadow studied Sonic's hopeful expression, the blush still coloring his cheeks. He couldn't help the small smirk that tugged at his lips. "So, you're telling me that you've had a crush on me this whole time?"
"Uhhh....tiny details might have been exaggerated for dramatic effect. But, I mean, if you want to put it that way, yeah, I guess I do have a bit of a crush on you. Or a big one, if we're being honest here." Sonic said, looking up at Shadow with a hopeful smile that was just a touch too wide for his own good. "Its your fault."
"I beg your pardon?"
"You always ignore me when I'm not being dramatic. This is the only way you pay attention to what I say!" Sonic protested with a laugh, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Oh please, I pay attention to you all the time. You're just too hyperactive to notice when I'm actually listening," Shadow said, rolling his eyes.
"Well, maybe if you weren't always buried in that magazine, I'd feel more noticed," Sonic retorted, his smile not wavering.
"For your information, I don't ignore you all the time. But you do have a knack for saying the most ridiculous things at the worst moments," Shadow said, trying to keep his own smile from growing. "And that magazine is new, anyway."
Sonic laughed, his tail wagging a mile a minute. "Yeah, I guess I do. But, hey, you've gotta admit, it keeps things interesting around here."
"Yes, I will admit, I did not expect to be handcuffed to you today." Shadow said, his smirk still in place.
"So you're not mad at me anymore?" Sonic asked, his voice hopeful.
Shadow sighed, his smirk not fading. "I'd say I'm more amused than mad. You really are an idiot sometimes, you know that?"
Sonic grinned. "Yeah, I know. But technically, I'm basically your idiot, right?"
"Technically, you're basically everyone's idiot." Shadow quipped, his smirk widening into a full smile. Despite his words, the warmth in his eyes gave away his softened demeanor.
"Now give me a big kiss, my little prisoner!" Sonic exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Shadow quirked a brow at Sonic's sudden boldness. "What makes you think I'm going to kiss you?"
"Uh, because we're stuck together and all romantic and stuff?" Sonic said, his voice rising slightly in pitch. His cheeks were now a full shade of red as he leaned in slightly, his eyes glinting with hope.
Shadow scoffed, flicking Sonic's nose with his free hand. "You're so full of it. But, for the sake of getting out of these things, I'll humor you." He leaned in, their faces now so close that their noses were touching. For a moment, it was as if time had stopped, the only sound their shallow breaths and the faint jingle of the handcuffs. Then, before Sonic could react, he pecked the blue hedgehog on the cheek.
Sonic blinked. "That's it? Just a cheek peck?"
"Be grateful for what you get, Sonic."
"How can I be grateful when all I get is a cheek peck?" Sonic pouted dramatically, his voice playfully sulky.
Shadow chuckled, shaking his head. "Cry about it." Then he grabbed the chain connecting the handcuffs and yanked on his half hard, snapping it in two with his superior strength. The chain clattered to the floor as he got to his feet.
"Hey, what? No fair, you cheated!" Sonic exclaimed, sitting up quickly and rubbing his cheek where the peck had landed.
"I wasn't about to sit here and wait for you to find the key."
"Ah, fair enough. But now that we're free, I have more tricks to show you!"
"Absolutely not."

Sonadow one shot number #21: Drama
"Shadow, we're breaking up."
Shadow looked up from his book, raising a brow at the blue hedgehog in front of him. "I beg your pardon?"
"The time has come. I regret to say this, my dark, handsome, lovable friend, but we can no longer be together. I must make a fresh start in my life without you. I am leaving for good. We can no longer see each other. Ever again. Sorry. Bye. I love you. You'll always be my second favourite hedgehog. And I hope you find someone new." Sonic said, dramatically resting his arm over his forehead. "Oh, don't mourn me, my dearest. The pain will lessen with time. Move on with your life. You deserve it. I was never good enough for you anyway. We all know I am the fastest thing alive and that you can barely run five feet without tripping over a rock. Goodbye. Forever. See ya. Love you. Don't look back as I walk away."
"What are you doing?" Shadow asked, confused. He tried to get up from the couch but was instantly pushed back by the blue hedgehog.
"Shh, I know this must break your wittle heart, but it is for the best. Please don't cry. You'll always be my favorite psycho hedgehog. And I hope you find someone else. I love you. Goodbye. We can never see each other again. I'm sorry. Please don't call me anymore. Please don't text me. Please don't send me letters. Please don't write me poetry."
"I've never written you poetry." Shadow said with a blank stare, but the blue hedgehog didn't seem to notice.
Sonic put a hand to his mouth and made a fake sob, wiping away a fake tear. He let out a dramatic sigh before dramatically walking towards the door.
Shadow blinked. Okay...this was new. But Sonic was usually doing something weird. It was one of the things he loved about him. And he knew it was an act, because when Sonic wasn't doing something weird, he was sleeping or eating or teasing Shadow. And he wouldn't just leave him. Shadow was Sonic's source of money.
Sonic loved attention. He loved having people notice him and talk to him. He was more charismatic than Shadow and far better with words than the Ultimate Life Form. He could convince almost anyone to do whatever he wanted. And he knew it. That's why he'd always been so popular. But he was already so popular that people stopped constantly gushing over him whenever he went into the city. Sure, they smiled and waved, but not with the same awe and respect that they had in the past. He needed new people. New places. New crowds. New things to do.
So since he and Shadow had become an item, Shadow had developed a system he called "Daily Attention Limit." If Sonic got more than his daily allowance of attention, then he would become even more insufferable than usual. Not only would he make everything a competition, but he would also be hyper-aware of everything and everyone around him, which meant he would always try to be the center of attention. And no matter how hard Shadow tried to keep Sonic under control, the blue hedgehog always managed to get more attention than Shadow was willing to give. It was as if he was always hyped up on sugar. The only thing that could calm him down was sleep, which Sonic did a lot of. So, every day, Shadow would give Sonic his allotted amount of attention. If Sonic got any more, then Shadow would take it away and make him do chores around the house, which usually made Sonic sulk. But it didn't last long because the moment Shadow gave Sonic his attention back, the blue hedgehog was back to being hyper and annoying again.
Just like a kid.
"Don't think about me too much," Sonic said, adding a little sniffle. "It will only make it harder for you. Goodbye, my dark, handsome lover."
Shadow blinked as he watched Sonic slowly walk towards the door, making sure to exaggerate his steps and add little bounces to them. The blue hedgehog looked like a child who'd just been told they couldn't have a piece of candy. Sonic even added a dramatic wave over his shoulder.
"Okay." Shadow said, then returned to his book. If there was one thing he had learned about the hedgehog, it was that no matter what you said to him, he would always do whatever he wanted anyway. So why waste your time?
"Wait! Are you serious? You're really going to let me go that easily?" Sonic asked, whirling around.
"Is that not what you want?"
"Aren't you gonna mourn me and, like, make a shrine for me or something? I mean, come on. This is kind of a big deal, don't you think? You're letting me go!"
Shadow sighed, turning the page in his book. "Did you make the bed?"
Sonic scowled. "I told you. I'm leaving. This is my chance to find a better life. One with more fame and fortune than you can ever give me."
"Well, I guess I'll have to take the bed apart then. What a shame."
"Stop trying to distract me! I'm trying to be dramatic here!"
"And you are doing a wonderful job of it."
"I'm super upset."
"What would you like for dinner? I was thinking I'd make chili dogs."
"You're not even listening to me! Why are you so calm? This is a big deal!"
"Of course I'm listening to you. I always listen to you. You're leaving me. I get it. You want me to say 'Please, Sonic, don't go. I need you' but I'm not going to. Because you'll come back for three reasons. Want me to list them?"
"I don't care."
"Number one, because you don't know how to cook. Number two, because you need my chest fluff when you sleep. Number three, because you can't survive without me giving you money. And four, because you love me."
"I don't love you. I never have loved you. I'm only with you because you give me free stuff." Sonic said, crossing his arms, glaring at the hedgehog.
"Alright then." Shadow turned another page in his book. "If you're going to leave, then you can make your own food. Have fun."
"Wait! No! I didn't mean that!"
Shadow raised an eyebrow. "Then what did you mean?"
"That you're an evil hedgehog and I'm breaking up with you because you're not good enough for me." Sonic said, putting his hands on his hips.
"I'm so heartbroken." Shadow deadpanned.
"This isn't working! Why aren't you getting upset? Do you not care about me anymore? Is that it?"
"I care about you. I love you. I want you to stay and be happy."
"No, you don't."
"Yes, I do."
"You can't fool me. I'm not falling for this."
"Sonic, I love you. I want you to be happy. And if being with me isn't making you happy, then I want you to go find someone else."
"Are you trying to guilt trip me or something? Because it's not going to work."
"I'm not trying to make you feel guilty. I'm just telling you how I feel." Shadow looked up at Sonic with a smirk. He knew what Sonic was doing. It was the equivalent of when a child skips their afternoon nap and throws a temper tantrum to get out of going to bed early. The hedgehog was exhausted. And he always got clingy and grumpy when he was tired. That was why Shadow had set the daily attention limit in the first place. And the only thing Sonic liked more than attention was sleep. But he never actually slept as much as he should. He was too busy running around everywhere, racing people who didn't even know they were in a race, talking to people who didn't even know he existed, and making sure he was in the public eye all the time. Sonic needed sleep and attention. Shadow knew the hedgehog would come back eventually.
"Don't look at me like that. I hate it when you do that." Sonic said, glaring at Shadow.
"Okay." Shadow looked down at his book again.
"You're not going to convince me to stay with those puppy dog eyes of yours."
Shadow didn't respond, turning another page in his book.
"Ugh, fine! I'll stay! You win. Happy?"
There we go. Shadow chuckled and set his book on the coffee table, motioning to his chest fluff. "Alright, come here."
"You're a jerk." Sonic said, flopping down onto the couch.
"And you're a drama queen." Shadow said, rolling his eyes.
"Don't roll your eyes at me!" Sonic said, smacking Shadow on the arm. But he curled up in Shadow's lap anyway, resting his head on the ebony hedgehog's chest fur. "This doesn't mean I forgive you, by the way."
"Of course not. How dare I let you sleep?" Shadow said, wrapping his arms around Sonic.
"I'm not even tired, I wanna go to the park or something."
"The park?"
"Yes."
"Perhaps we can go after you get some sleep. You've barely rested at all this week."
"I don't need any more sleep."
"You do."
"I don't."
"Sonic, I'm not going to argue with you about this. Go to sleep."
"No. I want to go to the park."
Shadow sighed. "What do I have to do to get you to sleep?"
"I dunno, entertain me or something."
"How am I supposed to entertain you if I'm reading?"
"Just talk to me."
"About what?"
"I dunno, anything."
"Alright." Shadow paused for a moment before speaking again. "Yesterday, I ran into Amy. She was at the store. We talked for a bit. She said she hasn't seen you in a while. Apparently, you don't answer her texts or calls. She seems concerned about you."
"Ugh, I know." Sonic mumbled, nuzzling against Shadow's chest fur.
"She wanted me to tell you to call her."
"I will."
"You'll forget, but that's not important right now. After I had a small conversation with Amy, I went to get a gallon of milk, but the clerk didn't have any. So I went to the gas station instead. But they were out of milk too. So I went to the grocery store, and of course they had some. I also needed more coffee beans because I drank the last of it. So-"
"Did anything funny happen? You know, like someone getting stuck in an aisle or something?"
"No, nothing happened. I got the milk and coffee beans and came home. Why do you ask?"
"Because you're so boring. Tell me a story or something. A funny story. Not some boring story about you getting groceries. I've seen you get groceries a million times."
"Very well." Shadow gently stroked Sonic's quills as he thought about what he should say next. He couldn't remember any funny stories. Maybe he could tell the blue hedgehog the time that Omega had accidentally eaten a table instead of a chair. That had been amusing. "There was once a little blue hedgehog who was very popular. Everyone loved him. And everyone wanted to be his friend. But the little blue hedgehog was lonely because he never got to spend time with anyone. So one day, he decided to try and make himself more likable by doing nice things for people. He started by giving out free chili dogs. And that worked. The little blue hedgehog got lots of friends. He was very happy. But after a while, the little blue hedgehog started to realize that he wasn't making any real friends. So he decided to try something else. He decided to start playing pranks on people. He thought that if he made them laugh, they would like him. And he was right. But the little blue hedgehog soon discovered that the pranks weren't fun anymore. He didn't enjoy making people laugh. So he started doing other things to get people to like him. He tried giving them presents. He tried telling them jokes. He even tried asking people on dates. But none of it worked. The little blue hedgehog was starting to run out of ideas. So he decided to go back to giving people free chili dogs. He figured that maybe if he gave everyone enough chili dogs, they would eventually forgive him for being so annoying. But the little blue hedgehog had made a terrible mistake. Because by trying to make everyone happy, he had forgotten to make himself happy. And eventually, he realized that the only way to truly make himself happy was to be himself. And that's why the little blue hedgehog is always so hyper and annoying. Because he wants people to like him and pay attention to him. And even though he's a very nice person, he's also a little selfish."
Shadow tugged on Sonic's ear gently just to make sure he was paying attention. It was a habit he'd developed over time. He wanted to make sure Sonic was still listening to him. Shadow always read Sonic stories or talked about his day before they went to bed. If he didn't, then Sonic would just fall asleep without warning, and Shadow would have to carry him to their room. It had been annoying at first, but Shadow had learned to accept it as another one of Sonic's quirks.
"I know that story." Sonic mumbled, burying his face in Shadow's fur. "You tell me that story all the time."
"Well, it's true."
"It's not a very funny story."
"No, I suppose it isn't. But it is a true story."
"I'm the little blue hedgehog, right? Am I the little blue hedgehog?"
"Yes, you are."
"That's stupid." Sonic yawned and nuzzled against Shadow's chest. "Tell me another story."
Shadow sighed. "One story at a time. You need to get some rest, Sonic."
"Ah, come on. Hey, wanna do something together? Oh, wanna do it? Haha. That sounded sexual, didn't it? Hahaha."
"Sonic, stop."
"Oh, come on. Don't be such a prude."
"Sonic, you're exhausted. Go to sleep."
"But I'm not tired."
"If you continue to act like a child, I will have no choice but to send you to bed with no dinner. And no dessert."
"Oh my gosh! No dessert? You know I can't live without dessert!"
"Then behave and go to bed."
"Ugh, fine." Sonic said, wrapping his arms around Shadow's neck. "I'll go to bed. But only because I want to and not because you told me to. I don't like you bossing me around."
"Uh huh, I'm very much aware of that fact."
"You're ruining the moment."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Were you having a moment? I didn't notice."
"You're so rude. I hate you."
"Love you too, hedgehog." Shadow said, kissing the top of Sonic's head. He gently rubbed Sonic's back, in between the two spikes that jutted out. The spot was Sonic's favorite place to be rubbed. It was his secret spot that no one else knew about. Shadow was the only one who got to touch Sonic in that spot. And Shadow knew how much the hedgehog enjoyed it. Because when he rubbed it, Sonic would immediately start purring, his gentle vibrations tickling Shadow's fur. And sometimes, if he rubbed it long enough, Sonic would start to drift off to sleep. It was like a magic spot. Like rubbing someone's belly or giving them a scalp massage. Sonic would instantly relax whenever Shadow touched him there.
Sonic let out a quiet purr as he nuzzled into Shadow's chest again. He was probably falling asleep by now. If not, then at least he was close to it. That meant Shadow could go back to reading his book. Maybe he'd finally finish it today. Or maybe not. He didn't really care. All that mattered was that Sonic was happy and getting his daily attention quota. And if Shadow got to read his book while Sonic slept on top of him, then he was happy.
