oh and speaking of things that are shit in harry potter, how about that whole ‘we can steal the sword of gryffindor from the goblins who rightfully own it and want it to be returned to them, because we’re the good guys’ thing

imagine harry as a dada professor
i don’t care what jkr or anybody else says, you cannot convince me that harry becomes an auror. maybe he almost does, and maybe he goes back to hogwarts to do his 7th year properly because he’s so sick of all the special treatment, and he wants to do it right, and because hermione won’t stop pestering him and ron about how important it is to finish their education, and also because maybe he’s not ready to leave hogwarts just yet. so maybe he goes back and does his newts, and then goes on to auror training.
and maybe he’s almost a year in, almost done with training, when professor sprout retires, and mcgonagall, who, of course, is headmistress, hires neville longbottom. and so harry goes to visit neville one day, on a weekend when he doesn’t have training, and he sees how the students love professor longbottom. and he sees how neville loves them back. and then, casually, neville mentions how he’d thought that harry would end up teaching defense against the dark arts, especially after the DA. and it’s just an offhand comment but it changes everything, and harry doesn’t know what to do with this information.
and so of course, he goes to hermione and ron, and hermione is ecstatic and she encourages harry to consider it, and ron is surprised, but he reckons it could work, and he tells harry that he’ll support him either way, but he’s sticking with auror training. and hermione looks into it and she finds out that mcgonagall still hasn’t found a proper dada professor, two years after the war, because everyone is still scared, scared of the curse and scared of hogwarts.
and harry doesn’t even think about it (of course he doesn’t) and he just goes right up to mcgonagall and asks for the job. and she tells him of course not, there’s already a professor for the year, and he has no teaching experience. and harry is about to defend himself when she tells him that he can shadow a professor for the rest of the year, and then she’ll decide. and harry quits auror training immediately and shadows a professor and he realizes he loves this more than anything. at the end of the year, mcgonagall hires him, and she had already decided to hire him when he asked her about the position the first time.
and so there’s a new dada professor at hogwarts, and it’s harry potter, and all the students love him. and after a bit the celebrity status dies down, and he’s just professor potter now, and neville becomes head of gryffindor, and the two of them are professor buddies for years and years until they both retire.
and years later, harry and ron and hermione laugh about how harry had almost become an auror, because it seems so ridiculous now to think of him as anything but a professor at hogwarts, which has always been his home.
