(Kaito didn't go on a holiday trip. He has finals and Aoko is being very competitive about it. But after seeing how Nakamori reacts when he disappears for too long without warning, he has started giving little notes so he doesn't worry to much.)

The last sentence is written with a diffrent angle and the Kid doodle is on a plane with a luggage.

It's been almost a year...

I've been thinking about this story a lot recently. About what it means to me as a writer. As a person. But really how when I went back and revised it *how good it is*

I will admit that the person who said it's 'meh' is not incorrect, or the person who said that the plot is laughable. Sure it's got it's problems (not nearly as many as it did, OH BOY OH BOY) but, at it's core, it's a banger of a fic. When I was revising it, I forgot what I was doing and was just reading it (until I got to an incomprehensible part and had to get back to work). But I was surprised at how little I remembered about this fic. And rereading it was like reading it with new eyes. And I was floored by how much I enjoyed it (go me!)

I know my stuff isn't for everyone. And this fic certainly isn't for everyone. And that's fine. Because it was for me. Me of the past. Me of today. And I think that's really all that matters.

And now, after almost a year...

Hey, I finally revised Shinobi of the Sand.

This isn't a rewrite. It's simply a revision. A beta read it always desperately needed. By me (Hi). The writer. A decade later. 

There is a long authors note that if you're reading this, you'd read that (maybe? I didn't realize people read those) that explains things more. Or not. Idk.

But this story is good. I'm proud of little Fish and what she wrote.

Dear Fandom readers - an etiquette fail

AO3 is not goodreads. It is not the NYT bestseller list.

You paid no money to read these stories. They are, in fact, a labor of love, done on the off time in the off hours of people who are writing for the joy of writing and the joy of the story.

Your ratings are not appreciated. Not by other readers, who don't know you from adam. Not by fandom-savvy passerby.

And not, in fact, by the author. Who again: Wrote this for fun. In their spare time - around work, around family and friend commitments. Around the rest of their lives. Fandom clout almost never "pays off" in any monetary gains, in any form of physical or financial security.

So please stop "rating" us on something we do for joy.

Today, a fellow fanauthor shared this with me. It was not on any story of my own, but they understandably needed a moment to go "wtf" and process it all. With their permission, I now share this with you.

You won't find this comment on AO3 anymore, by the by.

I have... a lot of issues with this. First of all being something that would be a C-grade in any US school system is not a "Good Rating" for most folks, but many of my issues would be the same even in this commenter had rated this a 10/10.

It boils down to this:

Why are you grading us on something we all are here to do solely for fun and personal enjoyment? Why does it have to be good?

Why can't it just be a labor of love and of joy to be good enough for you, dear commenter?

Do I, as a fanauthor, want to write well? Sure! I do want to write good stories. But I didn't ask random readers to grade me on them. Not in bookmarks that I can easily check, and certainly not in my comments section. And I never will want them to. Every author I've talked to agrees. Is there someone out there who might want this? Sure. Most likely, even! The human experience and desires are broad and varied. But in my experience, if they do exist in Fandom, they're the vast minority. So please:

Don't.

Honestly, this is a great question right now because I have been experiencing low creativity lately, so I do have a few things fresh on my mind.

First, recognize and accept how you are feeling and let go of the idea that you are a failure. Yes it is frustrating, but it's more frustrating to fight it. You have highs, and therefore, you also have to have lows. Abuse your highs because they won't always be there, and ride out your lows, knowing that they are only temporary. 

That being said, I don't agree with the idea of just putting everything down and walking away from it. I think that you shouldn't force yourself to do what you were doing before, but I don't think cold stopping is good. I swear by the idea no matter what, do a little nugget. It doesn't have to be good but do it. Whether it is 200 words, a little doddle, a line of knitting, or whatever the smaller nugget of your craft is.

And when you are in low creativity, be nice to yourself. Do not go deleting things that feel like trash while you are at a low point. Wait. Just let it sit. It's not hurting anyone, existing. Anything you make at a low point is going to feel gray until you can see colors again

I think it’s good to go looking for inspiration but have low expectations of what will come out of it. If it makes you write a paragraph or half an idea or just makes you excited thinking about your craft, then that is enough. Remember, don’t delete anything while in this mood. Any idea you have, keep it to read when you can actually consider it.

Where to find inspiration: 

Your own work. I love rereading my old work. Even if I don’t get anything new, it's a great time. DON’T edit, just enjoy. No critique, just vibes. Do you find something you wish you did differently? That sounds like a creative idea… you should write that down and put in a new work.

Watch a show, read a book, or find art in your genre. Now, I will add here to exclude other people's fan work in this if you compare yourself to others. I would say don’t compare yourself to others, but that is not really something that is just a ‘turn off when I am already at a low point’ kind of thing, so just avoid things that make you feel worse.

ON THAT NOTE: While you are down here feeling the low, creativity. Take notes. Take notes on what worked. A show gave you an idea? Write it down. Now you know to try it next time. Let me promise you that you will not remember. Keep it somewhere and add to it even if it feels stupid or trivial. (Some of these are from mine.)

Take care of yourself. Low creativity isn’t always a sign that you haven’t, but it certainly doesn’t help. Your brain is a part of your body. Eat well, drink water, take a shower. I am not kidding about the shower. I can not tell you the amount of times when I am thinking ‘Why do I hate everything right now?’ and the answer was that I needed to wash my hair. Bonus: shower thoughts, bathroom break thoughts. Take your phone to the bathroom with a note doc open. You might catch something.
