Rody hadn’t meant to cause any discomfort – when he saw the other fall off their stool, his inclination was simply to help. He quickly realized how it might have otherwise appeared, and that the person he was offering his help to clearly didn’t want it. “My apologies, I only intended to help,” he said, backing off a step or two.
The bartender’s comment shocked him, and he may have jumped just a bit. “Er, she’s not – I’ve never met-“
Too late; the bartender had turned back to bartending, and he was left alone with the woman. It wasn’t exactly the most comfortable he’d ever been. “Um. Would you happen to have anyone else here in this bar who knows you? I wouldn’t want to cause further discomfort by having to walk you home, but you do look a bit drunk…”
Drunken Shenanigans || Marisa & Rody
@green-lancer
Rody and Marisa go to a bar. Marisa gets too drunk and Rody has to take them home.
Marisa was mad. She had been cut off a couple minutes ago with the bartender claiming that she had too much to drink tonight. Marisa swore at him demanding that she get another drink as she still had the money to pay. Isn’t that how it was suppose to work? She knew when she had too much.
Falling to the ground off her stool didn’t mean shit. Marisa could feel hands on her, fighting to push whoever it was away.
“I can stand on my own,” she growled, managing to get back on her feet. The bartender shook his head, gesturing to the person who had tried to help her up.
“You should take your friend home before she becomes trouble.”

“I don’t know,” the cavalier admitted, eyes wide as he took in the sight of all these books-! before trying to focus back on the task at hand. “If you’d like to start in the front, I can start in the back, and we’ll work towards the middle? If you find anything that looks good, let me know, and I’ll see if we already have it or not. I’ll also see if I can make any good recommendations for you.”
Libra followed in Rody’s shadow, shoulders drawn close to his ears in apprehension of more uncomfortable bookstores and sketchy cashiers. As it happened, Rody didn’t stiffen or beat a quick retreat, and the false monk allowed himself to relax.
The owner behind the desk, with a sympathetic smile and waving them further into the store, was the final touch that let Libra leave his trepidation at the door.
“Oh thank Naga,” he said breathily, exhaling. His eyes lingered on a colorful book’s spine, lettering too tiny at this distance to read easily, and he hummed. “Where do you want to start?”

“I know, I know. Sometimes it’s just hard to remember that, especially when it feels like you have to.”
Romance was, after all, something very keenly driven in, and something present almost everywhere. It was hard for him not to feel just a bit odd about it.
…Just how long had he been talking to Xane, again?
“The cookies!”
"What are you makin'?"
There was a slight jump at the voice; Rody had honestly been too engrossed to even notice anyone approaching. “Oh - just cookies, right now, actually,” he admitted, setting down the tray. “The recipe was in one of the old cookbooks I had back home, but they always seemed too dry. After seeing some of the sweets in the market, I figured I could try and experiment to make them a bit softer, but I’m not entirely sure how that’s going…”
His gaze turned to the other, subtly looking xem up and down. “Why? Would you like one?”
…Xane had better be prepared for some form of food, because it appears the cavalier is set on feeding xem.

“Perhaps I should go first,” Rody volunteered; it seemed only right, since he’d left first before. If there were things inside that were already horrible to the eyes… well.
He couldn’t exactly imagine a second bookshop for pornography so close to the first, though. The town didn’t seem large enough for that, and surely one in one location was enough. It didn’t stop him from slowing and glaring suspiciously at the first book he saw inside, but it seemed safe enough. Behind the counter, the owner gave him a seemingly sympathetic look, as though he could tell what horrors had just come to pass – and perhaps, given how the signs were, it had indeed happened before.
Libra nodded, a silent agreement. At worst, it would be a repeat of the previous experience. At best, it would be a bookstore curated by helpful staff looking only to assist them. It would probably be a healthy in-between, with an aging owner willing to answer questions and a younger assistant with a ready glower for difficult customers.
“Well, I’m sure it can’t hurt to try going to the left?” Well, fairly sure. If nothing else it shouldn’t physically hurt. Just be yet another thing on the list of things he would wish to forget but be unable to.
Like, Naga save him, the illustrated cover to a sex position manual he’d passed by on the way out.
“Do you want to go first? Or should I?”

Rody smiled fondly. “They certainly are – again, a handful, but I suppose any small group of kids could be.” By now his sisters were teenagers, true, but they were still his younger sisters. “I’m sure they’ll find you just as lovely.”
“Yes,” he said with a nod; for not seeming to know much about Altea, she certainly seemed to know about Marth. He supposed that by now, everyone did, anyway. “I can’t say I know of your Exalt, or your Halidom, though. Still, I’m sure even being close to the leader of a country is a great honor.”
🍵
There was nothing like a nice, relaxing cup of tea after a long day - but the one thing Rody hadn’t quite expected was company. Nevertheless, it didn’t seem an unpleasant thing, either, and he always liked doing things for others, as well.
“Ah, hello. I was just about to put the kettle on - would you like some tea, as well?” he asked, smiling at the lady.

± but add an r to that last word
Rody thinks Marth is a good leader and certainly admires him for that - if he thought anything less, he would probably be just a tad less eager to serve as a knight. He admires Marth’s friendliness, and that Marth seems to be nice to children (when they aren’t screaming, of course)

Perhaps the word had been too strong, but Rody wasn’t exactly aware of that. “Well, whatever you would - well -”
Oh, dear. That was quite the question, wasn’t it? He knew the answer, of course, but the thought of saying it (aloud, to someone who was still practically a stranger) made him shuffle on his feet again. “It just... It feels, odd, that for all the stories of romance in the world, I’ve never felt anything of the sort. But, thinking of someone else trying to confess their love for me is. Extremely uncomfortable, too. Even as a joke.”

The cat’s approval, whether of him and Chad, the meat, or both, was nice, but Rody felt just a bit more rewarded by the boy’s reaction to the food. “Really, it’s no trouble at all. I don’t need repayment for being decent and nice,” he said with a shrug. “You needed food, and I had excess. I don’t like to see anyone starving...”
He wondered if he should offer them a ride somewhere, make sure both boy and cat had a safe place to stay, but Chad already felt indebted to him, and he didn’t want to push too hard, lest he feel uncomfortable, “Debt or not, though, if you do need anything else, at any time, I’ll try to help as best I can. If you wouldn’t mind, that is.”

Rody weighed the decision for a moment, but he was sure his sisters wouldn’t mind - in fact, they’d probably enjoy the company. “I don’t see why not. I don’t think my sisters would mind, as long as you don’t mind the almost certain pestering from them. They can be... quite enthusiastic, sometimes.”
“Altea’s technically part of the empire of Archanea. In fact, the emperor of Archanea was first the king of Altea,” he said. “I’m actually part of his royal guard, but with the war over now, he said it would be quite all right if I took a break to visit the family - he knows all too well how important that is, I think. I must say I’m grateful for that.”

Rody watched for a moment as Xane’s face began to change into something just a bit more serious before quietly explaining. “Yes, it may be a joke - but not everyone will find an exploitation of their feelings funny. In fact, most people probably wouldn’t.”
He didn’t know who Xane was thinking of, or what had suddenly caused xem to look so serious, but any thoughts he had on that matter were soon interrupted by the question. “Erm.”
There wasn’t anyone he could think of; no names or faces came immediately to mind, nor did any come after a few moments of thinking frantically hard to find someone, anyone, that he could possibly want a confession from. In all his years, only one person stood out as anything close to that, but even then he wasn’t sure he’d want an actual confession.
“I. I don’t know.”
He shuffled awkwardly, and heaved a sigh before mumbling, “I don’t even think there is anyone.”

The storekeeper’s farewell only made Rody grimace, and he was quite glad when they were free of the place. He shuddered a moment after they exited, as if to free himself of anything to do with that.
“The sign for books looks a little more to the left, although that could just have been referring to the, er...” Rody didn’t want to continue on that line. “If there’s no books there, then we’ll try the other to the right. I do hope that one of them will be an actual, proper bookstore, rather than...”
He gestured at the store they’d just exited.
Libra took a more sedate pace to fleeing, but the breeze he generated still pulled gently at his clothes. Nodding thankfully at Rody, he held the door open to allow the cavalier to exit first. (He thought he heard a croaked, “Have a good day” from somewhere in the back of the store, but he ignored it, mostly.)
“Do you want to try the door to the right or the left,” Libra said, once they were both safely back outside the dark confines of adult book store. Neither door was appropriately labeled, but the insides of either couldn’t be worse than what they had just perused!

“Excellent. I don’t have anything on me at the moment, but I do have a few dishes and baked goods I could probably write down from memory at this point.”
The cavalier hummed thoughtfully, then shook his head. “No, no, it’s all right. Altea isn’t very big, though. From coast to coast, it might take - maybe a week, or two, if you’re walking and not spending too much time actually travelling. But I should be at my home well before tomorrow evening, if I’m on horseback and I start out early enough.”
