Greg Mort “A WINTER’s DAY” Somerville Manning Gallery
Greg Mort “A WINTER’s DAY” presented by Somerville Manning Gallery Opening Reception Friday, November 8th, 2024, 5:30 pm. Artist talk: 6:30 pm.
Sharing these #pastel images for the first time. #Pastels have been my secret passion from the beginning of my creative journey. This material fascinates and gratifies me for many reasons. The intense tactile experience of moving and blending the minute grains of pigment with your fingers is unique to only this medium.

Greg Mort is an internationally recognized American contemporary artist whose unmistakably modern creations have the classic feel of the Dutch Masters juxtaposed with startlingly modern designs. His signature images combine his passions for art, science and nature.
Mort’s 2024 summer open studio titled BEYOND MY WINDOW is unique as he is sharing his lifelong fascination with illuminated multimedia 3D art creations. The primary focus of this limited collection of only twelve multimedia collage constructions is an original watercolor painting presented or “viewed” from the interior standpoint of a room via the perspective of a window.
Mort’s artwork is in many prominent collections including the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, Boston Museum of Science, Delaware Art Museum, Farnsworth Museum, Academy Art Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Brandywine River Museum and the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. His works have been selected for many public space venues. He has been honored to participate in the United States Department of State’s Art in Embassies program. Mort strongly believes in the ideals of cultural diplomacy and recently had paintings displayed at The White House as part of this program. Mort’s artwork has been exhibited in over one hundred museum and gallery shows around the world. Recent museum shows include “Lunar Attractions” at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA and “Starry Skies of Art” at the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Finland and The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore Maryland.
Deeply fascinated with astronomy and the universe Mort’s life-long interest in science is frequently reflected in his artwork. He has been
a commissioned NASA artist since 1983 and serves on the board of the Lowell Observatory. In 2010 his painting “ZERO-G Apples” was one of six paintings juried into “The First Art Show in Space” aboard the International Space Station. A skilled astro-photographer and telescope builder Mort is a sought-after speaker on the intersection of art and science.
Throughout his career Mort has recognized the power of imagery and used his art to share his passion of promoting environmental awareness. In 2007 he established The Art of Stewardship Project, his family foundation that supports and inspires ecological consciousness through the arts. The Art of Stewardship Project works with arts and educational organizations to build partnerships and collaborations reinforcing the artist’s role in preserving our fragile Earth. Leading
by example Mort is a Clinton Global Initiative Partner offering his artwork to support the goals of Circle of Blue the international educational organization focused on preserving the Earths fresh water.

Night Into Day ~ by Greg Mort Special Release Fine Art Giclee Print 12" X 18"
“Night Into Day” is an iconic Greg Mort image. It is printed on archival paper with archival inks in an edition of 10. The image size is 12” X 18”. The original watercolor painting is included in Greg’s beautiful hard cover art book VOYAGES ~ Exploring the Art of Greg Mort.
“NIGHT Into DAY” Most of us exist in a daytime world. We think of the day as a kind of “Reality”. And yet the day is, in so many ways, a lie. Here’s what I mean. What we really see during the hours of the day is an ocean of air illuminated by the Sun creating a wonderful canopy of blue. A comforting dome not unlike the blanket we wrapped up in as a child. Only at night do we see the true state of affairs before us a vast, ancient, star-studded abyss. Some part of us resists the notion of a dark universe. Even this painting betrays my subconscious belief in a sunlit cosmos. The day should be folding back to reveal the night.
GICLEÉ is a French word that literally means, "to spray." This term in the art world of fine reproductions is sometimes alongside the words IRIS PRINT, where Iris is actually the name of the printer itself. It represents the most advanced form of fine art reproduction today. The process, as the word GICLEÉ implies, utilizes the spraying of high quality inks onto a variety of materials. This creates a near continuous tone of rich color that is at the same time durable. Canvas, fine drawing stock, even archival watercolor papers, rough and smooth alike can receive the appropriate pigments easily because there isn't the need for the traditional plates that must come into play with off-set lithography. Large-scale works can be created that invite side-by-side comparisons with the originals. The result is a dazzling product with color permanence that both artist and art collector can be proud of. Gicleé has been recognized around the world by Museums as being the pre-eminent process of fine art reproduction.
