A Visit to Tony Wade’s Studio at The Art House
Recently, I took a to visit to Tony Wade’s open studio at The Art House in Wakefield. It was an engaging experience that offered far more than a glimpse into a his process, it felt like stepping inside a visual and emotional map of memory, place, and intention.
Wade’s studio walls were covered with layers of maps, old photographs, colour studies, diagrams, and fragments of text, like a living collage of his thoughts. It felt immersive, as though the studio itself had become part of the work. I was struck by how his practice uses place not just as subject, but as material, each location bringing its own stories and connections.
One ongoing project that really stayed with me involved guests painting sections of a large silk screen, which will eventually become a public artwork on the outer walls of a local park. Designed with vibrant flowers, the intention behind it is simple yet powerful: to draw people into the park, to welcome them. This act of inviting others in through colour and participation, really spoke to me.
Visiting artist studios, offers a rare and valuable opportunity to witness the behind-the-scenes workings of a creative mind. It illustrates the process and makes space for dialogue. Seeing Wade’s ideas pinned across the walls gave me a new appreciation for the way an artwork evolves and reminded me that the space of making is just as important as the final result. For emerging artists like myself, these moments offer learning, encouragement, and a real sense of connection.
With my practice exploring the healing potential of nature particularly through community and folklore, I found this encounter incredibly grounding. I was reminded how important it is to allow process and place to guide the work, to let materials, stories, and people shape what we create. Wade’s use of mapping, both literal and emotional, made me reflect on how I might further map the journeys of my own pieces, both in their making and in how they’re received.
More than anything, visiting Tony's studio reminded me of the importance of openness, not just in sharing a space with others, but in staying open to where an idea can take you. That a wall full of sketches and pinned notes can be as alive as the final artwork itself.

I am often asked what advice I have for aspiring bassists… The two most important recommendations I can make are to practice diligently and listen carefully.
It is also essential to practice with a purpose in mind. Your practice time should not be spent on “noodling.” Know what you are working on and focus on that. If you aren’t sure where to start, chords are always a good choice. Get a solid grasp on your chords so you can understand how your notes will fit in with the notes of others. Listen to the music you want to play and study it with this in mind.
When you land your first gig, leave your ego at home and bring a second set of ears to the gig. Make sure you know the form and keys of the songs you’ll be playing. Know when to stop soloing, read the room. Dress your best so you feel your best and get in the right mindset. And remember, every gig is an opportunity to learn.
My complete roadmap for bassists looking to take the stage is in my Ron Carter Library under the title “Blueprint for the Working Jazz Bassist.” For those of you not quite there yet, “Comprehensive Bass Method” will be the place to start. There’s much more to explore, however, including my online masterclasses with Open Studio and tonebase… I invite you to explore what I have to offer on my website,  www dot Ron Carter Jazz dot com.

140520 - open studio
blue night radio ♡ (105th broadcast)
stream:mixcloud
guest: ko young-bae from soran and kim hyung-tae from busker busker (and the people who won tickets to the open studio)
translation: none
cute parts: at 05:40 jonghyun says "you can make sounds!" to the guests and laughs. at 18:20 jonghyun says to kim hyung-tae "you look cool today!" and hyung-tae replies "oh- it's the same clothes as yesterday" and jonghyun replies (fast as lightning ahah) "you didn't go home?", they laugh, and hyung-tae says "shh!" and they laugh more. at 19:20 jonghyun says "i said i wouldn't to my makeup today, but manager-hyung insisted [something i didn't understand], that's being an idol [for you]. do i look like an idol?" and the guests replies "yes!". ko young-bae laughs and says "someone replied very strongly, "YES!"" and laughs. jonghyun says "how about young-bae?" *silence* "ahh there's no reply" and they laugh. at 38:00 jonghyun sings "radio star" (but only for like, one second).
at 48:00 ko young-bae sings "don't loose weight" live, at 59:00 hyung-tae sings live and at 1:16:40 jonghyun plays (back then) an unreleased song, "시간이 늦었어/it's late" (aka "beautiful tonight") since he couldn't sing live because he had a cold. after the song at 1:21:00 ko young-bae says "the song is REALLY good!" and jonghyun replies "really? thank you". he then continues "the whistle was really hard" (and then he proceeds to whistle flawlessly???). and at 1:21:40 jonghyun says "[i've sung this song] at a fanmeeting before". in the ending ment, at 1:47:10, jonghyun says "i like you all a lot, and meeting [you], i [am] happy. [something i didn't understand], and even though it's a bit embarrassing, i can feel your love" (something along those lines).
this broadcast was so fun and chaotic, i gave up after a while making a note of all the fun things, so sorry for being sloppy in this one. and as usual, don't take my wanna-be-translations as 100% accurate because they still are not!
song list: here

© Shruti Ramlingaiah / 2024 From Through a Hollow Sky and on Open Lines
chilled blue sky and a sun
To know what is real in a city so lit, grids of light demarcate deep dark nights in a view from a landing flight, and the gleaming sun through the day demarcates processes of my brain to fragments. Sitting inside a room, the glass pan window opens to another’s glass shield on the other side. From this high floor, everything and everyone seems to have emptied out. shivering me, frozen toe bones, blanket clad staring out to reflected light, my eyes skim a sharp shadow that speaks of a presence, a solid and concrete. Instantly reminds me of Mohammed Kazem’s clean, sequential triangles plucked on a clean slate of white paper I saw a few days back in a gallery: utterly held light, glowing and supported by shadow. Much of what is the case in Abu Dhabi, walking down the street or looking out of the window appears slate full of sharp cuts on the exteriors while the interior’s carved absent. The other day we discussed how the city has risen in height, coz everything above eye level is attempted by us. The flattening of ground and beneath it gets surpassed for it never holds light; wherein sunsets are an orange tinge of melting gold, gilding building edges. What I captured on my phone, are many others like- pink, purple and scarlet washed on a chilled blue sky - while riding on a bus at around six:PM.
Through a Hollow Sky and on Open Lines is a poetry and photography collection published here as a single-text, created during the RIZQ Art initiative's RAi residency and as part of a field note and adjacent research reflections between memory, cities and ecology in Abu Dhabi, UAE in 2024. These were displayed as visual-prose (alongside three wonderful artists/cohorts) at the Open Studio @MAKEStudios in December as part of this residency.

Jersey City's open studios were amazing! I'm so glad, that I go to experience so many different types of art.
Obviously a lot of modern art, but there was furniture making, textiles and even traditional oil painting.
Not to mention all the free vegan treats..oops! Lol 😂
I also got Indian Food too.
