Personal trainers are evolving past fitness
Tumblr media
It always intrigues me to learn the real reason why someone seeks my services. Sure, on the surface it seems obvious – people hire trainers to help them “get in shape.” But what does that even mean, really? Some people want help learning proper technique because they’re new to exercise and they’ve been brainwashed to believe it’s a dangerous endeavour (it’s not, or at least it doesn’t have to be). Others have highly stressful lives and they’re too tired at the end of the day to marshal their mental resources. These people simply want someone who knows what they’re talking about to tell them what to do. Lately I’ve been noticing a new trend, one that’s becoming more visible as personal training continues to evolve from something ex-bodybuilders used to tinker with as a hobby into a legitimate profession open to anyone.More and more, people are looking for personal trainers with the ability to act as a sort of multi-faceted medical practitioner. They want someone who they can turn to with questions about fitness, yes, but also questions about deeper concerns, issues like nutrition, sleep and mental health. It’s not uncommon for clients to come to me with existential maladies to match their physical ones; and in fact, I’ve had more than a few tell me I’ve been more helpful in addressing their woes than any doctor, shrink or physiotherapist. (To be clear, nobody should fire their family doctor or therapist in favour of a personal trainer. But the duties of a quality coach extend beyond fitness.)“The mentality that trainers are just drill sergeants has significantly shifted,” said Tim Jones, CEO of Precision Nutrition (PN), during a phone call earlier this month. “Trainers are now being viewed more as coaches and health care providers.”This is why it’s so important for trainers to have a broad skill set. Anyone with a clipboard and a whistle can structure a workout, but how well can you address those deeper issues that lie just below the surface? Industry leaders, like the brain trust at PN, have played an important role in facilitating this paradigm shift. Since 2005, PN has been at the forefront of fitness and health education, with their flagship nutrition certification now a standard requirement for every trainer worth their salt. This month they have launched a new Sleep, Stress Management and Recovery Coaching Certification, something Jones says will provide trainers with even more tools to help their clients.“People develop very strong, trusting relationships with their personal trainers. We want to help trainers feel more credible and confident when responding to these new questions their clients are asking. We want to change the way trainers view themselves and the level of impact they can have on their clients’ lives.”If it sounds like a stretch to place personal trainers in the same category as doctors and nurses, well, chances are you haven’t worked with a high-level coach. The best of the best operate on an entirely different level than your stereotypical rep-counter. They view fitness and health through a clinical lens, one that takes into view a complete and holistic perspective.“We don’t really have the ability to have deep conversations with our doctors,” said Jones. “You see your doctor, you get your lab test, you get your prescription, then you go. There’s no space to have a dialogue about things you may have read, things you may have heard. But you can have that with your personal trainer.”Reaching this higher level of professional standing isn’t easy. The days when all a trainer needed to set-up shop was a jacked bod and the ability to count to 10 are long gone. The internet has made available all of the tips and techniques that were once considered trade secrets, and social media offers a sense of personal connection that can make an onscreen avatar just as compelling and commanding as a flesh and blood coach. So what is it that separates pretenders and frauds from the real deal?According to Jones, it’s credibility and competence, two factors that are only earned through education and experience.“The opportunities for education in this industry have grown substantially over time. From functional movement and nutrition programs, to behaviour change and health coaching, there are so many options available to trainers to help them feel more confident in responding to these new questions consumers are asking.”This isn’t to say every trainer needs to have a masters in kinesiology or a two-year college diploma. Most trainers understand the musculoskeletal system; they’re well-versed in anatomy 101 and how muscles function in relation to tendons and ligaments and bones. If what you’re looking for is to simply add a bit of muscle or lose a few pounds, well, just anyone can help with that. But as Jones points out, there’s a lot more to a healthy lifestyle than sweating it out at the gym a few days a week.“There are factors beyond nutrition and exercise that influence our health and well-being,” he said. “It’s much more comprehensive than just pumping iron and eating chicken and vegetables.”Paul Landini is a personal trainer and health educator in Kitchener, Ont.Sign up for the weekly Health & Wellness newsletter for the latest news and advice. Global Laser Hair Loss Treatment Market Report 2021: Market to Reach $318.4 Million by 2026 - Developed Regions Dominate, Developing Markets to Exhibit Fastest Growth
Tumblr media
Dublin, Nov. 22, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Laser Hair Loss Treatment - Global Market Trajectory & Analytics" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. Global Laser Hair Loss Treatment Market to Reach $318.4 Million by 2026 Global market for Laser Hair Loss Treatment estimated at US$248.8 Million in the year 2020, is projected to reach a revised size of US$318.4 Million by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 4.3% over the analysis period. Treatments such as hair transplant surgery, medications like finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine), and laser therapy, stops or reverses the hair loss. Laser therapy constitutes a sophisticated medical therapy involving use of high precision focused lasers for treating specific areas with abnormal growths or tumors. The precision of laser ensures that damage due to therapy is minimal, far lesser than conventional surgery methods. However, laser therapy is expensive. Despite this, laser technology gained considerable traction over the past few years, for treating hair loss. Lasers are being used for removing blockages at hair roots which prevent blood circulation. Treatment with laser is also known to fortify hair and enhance hair shine and elasticity. Both low- and medium-level lasers are used for laser treatment for alopecia, with low-level lasers accounting for major share in the overall market. Low-level laser light treatment (LLLT) which is otherwise known as cold laser treatment or red light treatment radiates photons within the scalp tissues and the weak cells present inside the scalp soak up the photons and promote hair growth. Therefore the low-level laser treatment is a broadly approved hair growth procedure that is tolerable, less invasive, and safe compared to other hair transplant surgeries. The market is anticipated to witness a steady rise over the coming years driven by the factors such as increasing prevalence of hair loss, including alopecia, and rise in prevalence of chronic diseases that trigger hair loss and technological advancements in treatments. Pattern hair loss constitutes the common hair loss type among both females and males. Lifestyles becoming busier, ageing population, and growing demand for solutions that are easy-to-use are some of the factors promoting growth for laser hair loss treatments market. Laser offers a quicker and more effective impact on new hair follicles growth. Another major factor driving market growth is the growing number of initiatives of organizations like the American Hair loss Association and the National Alopecia Areata Foundation among others, for increasing awareness about the available options for hair regrowth. Demand for non-invasive and pain-less treatment options is also fuelling demand for treatments like laser hair loss treatment. Other growth drivers include more and more companies entering the field, increased market availability of advanced products, and growing disposable incomes of people. The number of clinics for specialty hair care, offering laser therapies, has increased in almost all countries worldwide. Consumers have also been showing much confidence in some of the technologically advanced laser options developed recently for laser hair loss treatment.Visibility of laser hair loss treatment products had also increased in the recent years. They are now easily available at all supermarkets and hypermarkets in developed as well as developing countries, which also significantly improved market growth prospects. Growing preference among consumers towards treating hair loss issues at home to the expensive treatments offered at specialized hair loss clinics also promotes market growth for home laser therapy devices. Increasing proliferation of alternatives to laser hair loss treatment however, hold the potential to hinder anticipated growth for the market. Laser technology based treatments are also not prescribed for people already on medicines for skin conditions and people with light sensitive skin, which is another barrier to market growth.Key Topics Covered: I. How Many Online Game Players Are You? – 5AMYOGI
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How many online game players actually know how to play their game? How many online game players actually know how to strategize and think on their feet? If you are one of these online game players, do not despair. You may not be a world-class player. But if you want to win at all, you should at least know some basics. Most online game players get hooked to the addictive quality of playing games online. They find it interesting and challenging to go head-to-head with friends and family in a virtual battle. And it is even more interesting when you know that your opponent is just a few clicks away from winning the game for himself. Yes, it is really very thrilling to play against someone who is far and away better than you. However, you should understand that playing this game need not be a battle of wits. In fact, you can use some simple tips and strategies to play better. Knowing the basics will allow you to at least have an idea of how to play your next game. Knowing some strategies will help you play smarter and increase the odds of winning in the long run. One of the best ways to improve your odds in a game is to read the game’s statistics. Statistics are the key to understand what strategies are working and which are not. Online game players should take note of everything so that they can make strategic decisions. They can also find out the game’s overall trend and use this knowledge to play better. Another important strategy is to learn how to play as the computer would. The best online game players know how to play their game as if the computer was there. They keep track of every detail of the game so that they can use it in their next game. Most players even have a practice mode so that they can play against the computer next time. Knowing when to switch strategies is also important. Playing a couple different games at once is fine but if you keep switching from one to another then you might not play your best. Knowing when you can adapt and change up will help you play better and feel comfortable doing so. Many online game players have their strategies locked in so that they know exactly what they will do next. It is also very important to build relationships with other online game players. You should make friends with those around you or even make a new friend. Building relationships will help you be a better player and it will also keep you from losing. Online game players should be willing to help each other out whenever they can. When you help someone else in a game then you are actually showing them that you care about the game. In turn, they will want to help you out as well. Try to make a lot of friends so that you can maximize your skills. As you play more you will become more comfortable. If you stick with just a couple of online game players then you might find that you get better at the game as you move on. Learning from others is a great way to improve. Try to avoid using cheats and hacks in these games. Hackers are not good because they can cause you to be banned. There are so many of these games on the Internet that you can never tell which games are hacks. If you are going to use a hack then you should tell everyone upfront. Make sure that you never share any of your information with anyone. In order to stay happy and satisfied with your online game play you must play according to a set schedule. Most people like to play while they are on break at work. That is why you need to set a date and time to play. Find an area where there are not too many other people so that you can play in privacy. Sometimes, online game players will compete against each other if the game is set up that way. If you are having trouble finding a game that you like check out the free ones that are out there. Many of them will have more of a selection than most of the paid games that you see. You can usually find an online game players that you like in any niche. Just keep in mind how many online game players you have and do what you can to maintain your friendships. Source link Read the full article

This CEO has led ‘sky is falling’ exercises since 2017 to prepare for catastrophes — here’s how they work
Tumblr media
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit last year, most companies scrambled to adjust to work-from-home life and a new economic landscape. But not Databricks, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence software start-up. That's because billionaire Ali Ghodsi, the company's co-founder and CEO, had been preparing his 2,500 person staff for doomsday-type scenarios for years. In 2017, Ghodsi started conducting exercises, which he dubs as "sky is falling" scenarios, once a year to prepare his leadership team for major disasters or recessions."I want to be paranoid," Ghodsi, 42, tells CNBC Make It.His contingency plans seem to be working. In May, one of Databricks' investors told CNBC that the company is aiming for $1 billion in annual revenue next year. And in August, $1.6 billion in fundraising brought the company's valuation to $38 billion, up from $6.2 billion pre-pandemic in October 2019.Here's how Ghodsi's exercises work — and how his company responded when a real-life crisis emerged.
What 'sky is falling' exercises look like
Ghodsi's first step is to visualize a disaster. He might, for example, ask his team: What do we do if the dot-com bubble crash of 2000 happens again right now?The exercise starts with Databricks' finance team, which does some pre-work on possible scenarios before the company's leadership team meets offsite, typically for a half day. At the offsite, the team reviews the possible scenarios and builds emergency plans, mapping out mid-crisis job responsibilities. At the end of the exercise. the leadership team compiles the plans into models, which Ghodsi shares with the whole company. It's meant to create a course of action if the economy comes to a screeching halt, he says.Ghodsi says he started running these exercises in 2017, when Databricks was growing like "crazy" and the market was having a banner year. The value of public companies on global stock markets grew by $12.4 trillion in 2017, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.Unsurprisingly, he notes, many of the company's employees found the exercises "frustrating" and "silly" at first. But Ghodsi says he learned firsthand how life can change instantly as a child, when his family fled to Sweden from his native Iran in the early 1980s, after the Iranian revolution."In this company, we always talk about the half-empty glass," he says. "That way, we are prepared when bad things are happening, so we can act and rectify them."
How Ghodsi's company reacted when Covid hit
Typically, Ghodsi says, people react to economic downturns by panicking and losing all semblance of productivity. But when the pandemic sent the U.S. into lockdowns in March 2020, his employees didn't blink: They already knew how to stay focused in a "sky is falling" environment."We weren't scrambling," Ghodsi says. "We've already done this every year, so we were ready."And for years prior, the exercises led Ghodsi to make decisions that ultimately set his company up well to weather the pandemic. In mid-2019, for example, a "sky is falling" exercise convinced Ghodsi to pull Databricks out of a planned $120 million deal for office space in San Francisco. The catastrophe planning also led the company to seek venture funding five times over the last four years. Ghodsi says multiple board members expressed reluctance, recommending only raising money "when you need it" — but Ghodsi persisted, arguing that the money could prove useful in a theoretical downturn. His lesson: There will always be bad days, to go along with the good ones. But if you can plan for them, he says, you might be able to come out on top.Don't miss:Self-made billionaire Thomas Tull on becoming rich, and how Warren Buffett changed his thinking‘I want to help other people that are in pain’: Inside a CEO’s battle with mental health Source link Read the full article

How Soon Is Now?: The Unraveling of Deathbed Estate Planning
Tumblr media
In “How Soon is Now: Estate of Moore & the Unraveling of Deathbed Estate Planning,” Professor Beckett G. Cantley and Geoffrey C. Dietrich discuss in detail the interpretation and application of Internal Revenue Code Section 2036 by the Tax Court to so-called deathbed transfers, relevant cases, including Moore, and the policy behind the Tax Court’s interpretation of the rules. Background Cantley and Dietrich start off with a brief summary of the federal gift and estate tax laws as they apply today to individuals who make gifts or have a taxable estate in excess of $11.7 million. They then go on to explain the common end of life transactions which may attract the attention of the Internal Revenue Service and caution against such last-minute planning due to the uncertainty over whether such deathbed planning will in fact accomplish the decedent’s tax objectives. Two transactions frequently scrutinized by the IRS involve: (i) Family Limited Partnerships (FLP) and (ii) the use of valuation discounts to leverage the lifetime gift tax exemption. In the context of an FLP, family members serve as general or limited partners of a family business or other pooled assets. Rather than making a capital contribution to the FLP, limited partners are gifted their ownership interest by a senior member of the family and have little control over the management of the FLP. These limited partnership interests generally will have a lower value than the underlying assets of the FLP, due to lack of marketability of the interest and lack of control by the limited partner over the FLP, both resulting in a lower valuation of the partnership interest for estate or gift tax purposes. The article opines that the opportunity to make discounted transfers of FLP interests doesn’t end at the initial transfer of ownership interest to a limited partner, but can continue into other estate and tax planning transactions. Transfer of an FLP interest to a Grantor Retained Annuity Trust (GRAT) or Charitable Lead Annuity Trust (CLAT) enables the grantor to take an additional valuation discount for the retained right to the FLP’s income stream for a term of years, which would have a lower value than transferring the FLP interest as an outright gift. Sales to children, other family members or trusts also provide a means to transfer FLP interests presumably at a value lower than outright sale of the underlying assets. While the sale will result in the frozen value of the FLP interest remaining in the transferor’s estate, all appreciation will be moved out of the estate and to the purchaser, while using little or no gift tax exemption. While the article provides a simplified explanation of the mechanics of GRATs and CLATs, Cantley and Dietrich could clarify how these specific trust structures differ from other types of trusts to allow for further discounting, specifically by including a brief discussion of IRC Sections 2702 and 7520. IRC Section 2036(a) IRC Section 2036(a) includes in the value of a decedent’s gross estate any property over which the decedent retained possession or enjoyment, had the right to possess or enjoy, or had the right to designate who shall possess or enjoy such property. The article provides insight into Congressional intent behind the purpose of this Section, and then goes on to discuss the interpretation and application of IRC Section 2036 by the IRS and Tax Court in the fundamental cases, Estate of Bongard, Estate of Strangi, Estate of Powell and Estate of Moore. In each of these cases, the Tax Court applied the following test to determine whether IRC Section 2036 may apply to the transfer of property, namely FLP interests: (1) the decedent made a lifetime transfer of property; (2) the transfer was not a bona fide sale for adequate and full consideration, which requires that there by a legitimate non-tax reason for the FLP; and (3) the decedent retained an interest or right enumerated in Section 2036(a)(1) or (2) or (b) in the transferred property which the decedent did not relinquish before death. Cantley and Dietrich then discuss their view on the policy behind application of Section 2036, and focus primarily on its effect on deathbed transfers. Although the pertinent case law reflects a pattern of transfers being made for tax planning purposes very near the transferor’s death, the article’s focus on the relationship between the application of Section 2036 and deathbed planning may be too pronounced. While it’s accurate to use these cases and Section 2036, together with IRC Section 2035, to caution against tax planning at the end of one’s life, it’s important to note that the timing of a transfer isn’t part of the Section 2036 multi-prong test applied by the Tax Court. Deathbed transfers clearly strengthen the argument that a legitimate non-tax reason didn’t exist for creating the FLP, but that argument could be made in any situation in which an FLP was established as part of a comprehensive estate and tax planning structure. Cantley and Dietrich allude to this risk that Section 2036 should be considered for any FLP transfers (not just deathbed transfers) in their discussion regarding steps to take in order to avoid application of Section 2036, but could be more clear in their explanation. How a Black Millennial On Track To Make $90,000 This Year Spends His Money
Tumblr media
Millennials across America have long been blasted for making investment planning a low priority. But that criticism might be unfounded now as the generation of roughly 70 million enters the post COVID-19 era with fresh optimism tied to personal finances. Millennials are more confident than other generations their money will last in retirement, new data from New York Life’s Wealth Watch survey shows. Take Jordan Myers, a 29-year-old mail carrier for the U.S.  Postal Service. He makes a base salary of around $41,000 a year. The amount is higher with overtime. Last year, he earned about $78,000 and expects to make $90,000 this year. He also makes around $4,500 a year from rental property. Myers, who lives in Memphis, generally works 13 hours a day, six days weekly. He walks around 14 miles most days, CNBC reported. Myers also has found a balance that works for him and his wife, Jalyn, and their one-year-old son, Jacob.  Pertaining to bills, the husband-and-wife team work together. While Jalyn makes much less, she pays for childcare, groceries, car insurance, and utilities. Myers takes care of everything else. “I do bring in more money, but we’re equal because she does have to take care of son more, and if she didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to work the hours I work, so I wouldn’t make the money I make,” Myers said. Further, Myers has made building wealth a top concern on his list. Monthly, he puts $500 into his savings account, $400 into his 401(k) and $2,000 into a taxable brokerage account through Fidelity. Now, he has around $3,000 in savings and $34,000 in investments. Plus, Myers is a member of an investment group led by real estate investor and YouTuber Graham Stephan, helping him learn about options trading and rental properties. Myers has earned up to $10,000 in a month trading options, despite the risks. Yet he usually reinvests those earnings and doesn’t recognize any gains. In five years, Myers hopes to be “halfway to being a millionaire, if not more,” he said. In 10 years, “I think I’d be well over being a millionaire.” He is confident he can hit his goal. He is saving for another rental property, which he hopes will pay for itself over time. He hopes his story inspires others to  learn and grow like him. “When you see me, it’s like, ‘Hey, that guy is also just working a normal job, day to day. He’s really growing day by day, month by month, year by year.’ I’m hoping I can show people that it’s possible.” Source link Read the full article

Tumblr media Tumblr media
How To Keep Fit And Sexy During Winters
Hey Ladies Winters are at their best, and do you know we put on weight during this period? There are a lot of reasons we gain weight in winters more than other seasons.
Tumblr media
They are – 1. It’s a common belief that we need to eat more to stay warm, but is that the case? And, those with more flab feel more cold and to stay warm they eat more resulting in piling on weight. And more calories stores in form of white fat in the body while we need brown fat to burn calories to keep warm. 2. Sometimes we feel more hungry during winters, that could be because of melatonin, hormones triggered due to darkness, contribute more sleep and in appetite. 3. Another case is, if you don’t even eat more in winters still you put on weight, the reason is we need sunlight to synthesis Vitamin D and in winters we don’t get enough sunlight so low level of Vitamin D stores more fat in body. 4. In winters, we tend to eat more fattier foods. We crave for puddings, brownies, fried food, more teas and coffees which results in extra calories which are hard to burn in winters due to our less activities in winters. Most of the time we keep our self inside, stocking up in warm clothes and lessen our activities. The result is weight gain. But there are some strategies to keep fit and lean during winters.

4. Plan your meals
If you think you won’t get enough time for preparing your next meal due to work pressure, then do some preparations before like chopping vegetables, pre cooked meals and store in your fridge. these early preparation will help you in avoiding last minute junk food order. If you have to go to a big party, eat something before you leave for party, this will save you to bite those sugary cupcakes.
5. Workout

According to the World Health Organization, in 2020 itself, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer in the world. A report published by National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) estimates that breast cancer cases are likely to increase by nearly 20 per cent. Throughout the world, the tenth month of the year is recognized as the month of "Pink October" to raise awareness about breast cancer. The month should also be a celebration of encouraging the women in our lives to take the first step in this journey of staying in "Pink of Health". happn, an international dating app, conducted an in-app survey to understand how Indians discuss health issues like breast cancer with their partners. The survey gave a glimpse of whether health issues are impacting the life and relationships of singles. 41 percent of users are not aware of examinations related to women's health Forty-one percent of users shared that they did not encourage the women in their life (mother, sister, friend etc.) to go for checkups for issues related to health. Sixteen percent of the respondents confessed that they did not remind women in their life to take examinations for their own health. It is important to note that regular self-examination is likely to detect breast lumps early. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. If it is detected in time, it will be cured in nine out of 10 cases. 49 percent of users said, "Breast Cancer is not an impediment when in love" A disease like breast cancer is likely to affect the confidence and self-esteem of women who are diagnosed with the same. With the change in the body, they might feel scared, less confident, and unloved at times. However, when questioned if breast cancer can be a deal-breaker for men, 49 percent of them shared that it is not a problem. 55 percent believe talking about physical and mental health is no longer a stigma The past year provided users with an opportunity to be open about their health issues--both mental and physical. Fifty-five percent of users agreed that they are comfortable talking about such issues even when they still explore the relationship. Thus, establishing how the new generation is not shying away from breaking the taboo and stigmas around the notion of keeping one's health issues secret. 40 percent of users believe that a couple's everyday life can be affected by some health problems A minimal headache can disrupt our whole routine for the day, so relationships are bound to be impacted by the health problems of our partner. Users shared that health issues can bring a little bit of tension and worry in the relationship with their partners. Health issues can be overwhelming for couples; thus, it becomes essential to voice your concerns to your partner. Sharing what you feel will provide you with clarity and make your partner your biggest support system. Source: IANS Source link Read the full article

How to Get Something Done When You’re Feeling Down
Tumblr media
Over the past two years, I’ve slogged through many, many unsuccessful rounds of fertility treatments trying to have a second child. To say the stress and grief from this has affected my mood and anxiety levels would be an understatement. It’s been hard not to plunge into a deep depression, and I’ve felt depressed for periods. Yet I’ve managed to stay reasonably functional and productive. How? Using tips from my psychology training that I’ve outlined here. If you’re depressed, your number one job is to look after yourself. Productivity is secondary to your mental health. However, learning how to be productive when you’re feeling down can help with depression recovery. If your first reaction to this topic is that it feels like extra pressure, stick with me while I explain how and why being productive can help with depression. All emotions have an evolved purpose. Sad, depressed, apathetic emotions cause us to pause, withdraw, and reflect deeply. This has self-protective aspects. Sometimes it’s wise to cocoon away from danger. Sometimes it’s wise to question what we find meaning in and not to keep plowing ahead doing the same things. But in depression, this self-protective, withdrawn, low-energy mode essentially gets stuck “on,” and becomes unhelpful. Instead of depressed feelings signaling the need to question whether what we’re doing with our lives is meaningful enough, everything starts to feel meaningless. Emotions are a signaling system. They help let you know when you’re safe versus in danger or heading in the right or the wrong direction. However, when they become prolonged, they lose their effectiveness as signals. When people are depressed their energy, activity, and mood levels decrease in a spiral. The lower energy you feel, the less you do, the worse you feel emotionally, and the cycle continues. Being productive can help interrupt that negative spiral and turn it around. Here’s where to start.
1. Schedule daily sources of accomplishment and pleasure.
For mood health, we need two types of activities: those that provide a sense of accomplishment and those that provide pleasure. A well-researched therapy for depression called “Behavioral Activation” is based on this principle. As a general rule, try to have one source of accomplishment and one source of pleasure in each of your mornings, afternoons, and evenings. These can be very simple. For example, a source of pleasure could be sitting in a sunny window to drink your morning coffee. A sense of accomplishment could come from a workout, vacuuming under your bed, or a work task. Some people find it helpful to schedule activities in advance so they can more easily hit the recommendation of one pleasure activity and one mastery activity, per morning, afternoon, and evening. (You would end up with six per day — three for pleasure, and three for a sense of accomplishment.) If you’re depressed, the pleasure you get from activities will typically be muted compared to normal. So, it may be a little harder to identify activities you would enjoy. This is another reason to schedule in advance. Start by brainstorming a list of the activities that provide either pleasure or a sense of mastery or accomplishment for you. Ask someone who knows you well to help if you feel stuck. This tip benefits productivity in direct and indirect ways. Activities that provide a sense of mastery or accomplishment are productive, and the structure of this approach will benefit your biological rhythms and your mood.
2. Reduce your usual workload.
When you’re struggling with your mood and high stress levels, attempting to work at 100% of your usual output is ill-advised. However, not working at all typically isn’t helpful either. Why? Regular work helps provide structure to your day. When you have the structure of regular activities, this helps regulate your biological rhythms, such as those related to eating and sleeping. Without the structure of regular activities, including work and socializing, those biological rhythms will become more dysregulated, which will tend to make depression worse. Fifty percent of your usual activity is a good sweet spot between not working enough and expecting too much of yourself. You may even find that your productivity doesn’t decrease that much with this approach. It will force you to prioritize deep work and other truly important tasks. Limiting yourself to 50% of your usual work will help you let go of activities that were only medium-productive to begin with. Fifty percent isn’t a hard and fast rule. You can choose a different number if you’d prefer, but adopt the principle.
3. Alternate between easy, medium, and hard tasks.
Another element of good mood hygiene is that you shouldn’t do all easy tasks or all very hard tasks for long stretches. Where does this recommendation come from? Partly it comes from observations of how kids learn best, and people with developmental disabilities. For these groups, negative feelings often manifest as behavioral outbursts. We see that behavior and happiness improve when people are not being under- or over-challenged constantly. You don’t need to take my word for this, you can easily observe for yourself how you feel if you are constantly challenged to the edge of your capacities versus if you intersperse this with familiar activities you feel confident with, but that still feel meaningful and productive (e.g., mowing your lawn or writing your monthly newsletter). When you’re scheduling your three activities per day that will provide a sense of accomplishment, aim for one hard, one easy, and one medium.
4. Cultivate a deep-work habit to reduce your need for self-control.
If you’re depressed, you’ll want to rely on self-control as little as possible, because everything feels more effortful when your mood is low. The best way to reduce the self-control needed for highly productive work is through strong habits. By this, I mean a daily routine of doing deep work at the same time each day for a couple of hours. You can create a deep work habit by doing it at the same time and place each day, and by cueing the start of your habit in a consistent way. A habit you do every weekday at the same time will be easier to keep up than one you do at varying times e.g., do your deep work at 10 AM everyday, not 10 AM on Mondays and 3 PM on Wednesdays. This approach also helps reduce decision fatigue. When you have a very consistent habit, the cues associated with the habit become enough to trigger it, without you needing as much self-control. This effect is well-documented through research but it can take a few months of keeping the same routine for it to no longer require nearly as much self-control. With consistency, it’ll become much easier to get started and to stick it out through your deep work session. Eventually you’ll be able to start deep work on auto-pilot, without it feeling like a big lift. For example, I start my deep work sessions by mixing an electrolyte drink, and setting timers on my Google Home for 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Initially I stumbled into this routine, but once these routines became my habit cues, I kept them up. My original reason for using the timers was to help train myself to concentrate for two hour blocks, and to help me better understand what the fluctuations in my focus were across my work period. The timers also help me pace myself, avoid unproductive overworking, and avoid boom and bust cycles of activity. A third reason I use the timers is that I find it harder to concentrate in the second hour. I need to be more protective of my concentration in my second hour of deep work. The timers remind me to do that. Once firmly established, it will become much easier to maintain your habit, no matter what mood you’re in and what strong feelings you might be having.
5. Consider getting treatment for your mental health.
This might sound obvious, but a way to be more productive if you’re depressed is to not be depressed anymore or be less so. Almost universally, people wait far too long before accessing treatment for their mental health. When I was a therapist, I would ask clients when the onset of the problem was. Frequently, the answer would be years ago, not months or weeks. There are a variety of approaches you can try, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or medication. Taking a broad-based multivitamin and mineral supplement can also help you be resilient to stress and is a simple option, especially if your eating habits have worsened due to your depression. Learning self-compassion skills can also be extremely beneficial for depression, stress, and anxiety if you tend to be self-critical. Skills for identifying and disrupting rumination are important to master as rumination impairs mood, productivity, and problem-solving. Treatment can help you understand how depressed feelings affect your functioning. For example, depressed feelings put people on the lookout for any signs of interpersonal rejection. This is part of their evolved purpose, since in an evolutionary sense, it’s dangerous to be excluded from our tribe. In reality, this isn’t always helpful. At work, this can manifest as you perceiving other people as being unsupportive, not liking you, or not recognizing your talents and capabilities, even when this isn’t the case. And this can lead to misplaced irritability and hostility towards bosses, coworkers, or clients. When you’re depressed or experiencing emotions like grief or anxiety, you won’t always be able to be as productive as you’d ideally like. Give yourself grace about this. Try a 5 minute self-compassion meditation if you need it. Be patient with yourself but also give the recommended advice a try. Depression often causes people to have negative expectations, which can include expecting advice not to work for you. If you know this, you can avoid this trap and experiment with the strategies provided. Source link Read the full article

The launch "could not be fully accomplished" because of a "technical anomaly observed in the cryogenic stage, ISRO chair K. Sivan said in a brief televised statement after the failed mission.  From Twitter @oneindia The Hindu Time ISRO chairman K. Sivan announced that a "technical anomaly was observed in the cryogenic stage and the mission could not be accomplished."
