Version 2.1.4

It’s finally working! I got the dragon to start flapping and after this video I added more attachments to stop the gear from coming off again. Another problem was the wing wasn’t still enough to provide lift. Soon I will be reinforcing the lift but I’m not sure is if this model will fly. After this however I will not be done version 3 will begin development witch will be a 3D printing model that will be much more accurate and efficient. After version 3 is finished the file will be made public so anyone can have one.

Version 2.1.3

This week I finally installed the wings. They are currently very basic with only sheets of paper with no reinforcement. I plan to make them more efficient and strong after I actually get it flying. The problem is when starting it it the gear box broke. I did a couple things to try and fix it, the main problems are the same with the fourth gear coming off the shaft and the second gear tilting until in no longer contacted the first gear. To fix this I am planning to elevate my materials from hot glue to solder.

Version 2.1.2

This week I got the flapping working for the first time and with it I have a video. The biggest breakthrough this week was I found that the reasons the gear box wasn’t working was that, one the second gear was off center, and second the fourth gear wasn’t gripping the shaft properly. I fixed the first problem by just adjusting a couple of screws and the second problem by adding some splinters from a popsicle stick to the hot glue to increase integrity. As can be seen in the video the dragon still has a problem with the wings going to far in the wrong direction. Next week I hope to fix this and add the the wing skin.

I’m back to make if weekly updates on the dragon.

This week I have started the hardest part of the project in making the gear box that will cause it to flap at a reasonable speed. The second picture had the gears on backwards just to check that the location of the second axle was correct. The first picture is the finished gear box.

This is the first powered model. Running it today it flapped successfully. Next I plan on doubling the torque because it moves to fast and adding the wings and tail.
