Making a shitty one-page RPG called Oh Shit It’s the Killer. The premise is simple: you’re a high schooler spending the weekend in the woods with your besties. The Killer is there also. He is trying to the Kill you

Bump in the Dark - Google Playsheets
Bump in the Dark is a Forged-in-the-Dark / Redacted Files game about monster hunters in a small town forgotten by the powers that be, attempting to keep their community safe while uncovering something... darker.

It's also the latest project for my spreadsheet collection!

One of my most in-depth character kits to date, this play-kit has safety tools, a run-down of character creation (with hyperlinks for navigation!) a sheet for each character, a Hunt page, a Pact page, a Keeper page, and a Faction page!

Girl by Moonlight: Lessons & Links
I really dig Girl by Moonlight. I’ve run quite a bit of Forged in the Dark across several different iterations: campaigns of Blades, Scum & Villainy, Band of Blades, Vergence. The base mechanics of FitD work for me most of the time– but sometimes I’ve felt out at sea or treading the same ground repeatedly. But that didn’t happen with Girl by Moonlight. Like Mountain Home, another GOTY from 2023, it tweaks the core Forged mechanics in a way which works. It has an additional layer of campaign architecture and player interaction incentives.
But Girl By Moonlight, as with any game, has some things you learn in the doing. We’ve just finished the final mission for our Girl By Moonlight On a Sea of Stars campaign, fourteen sessions including our Session Zero. I also just finished Session Zero for a new short series of GBM Danger! Unexploded Spell. I want to share a few impressions & lessons I have, for both facilitators and players.

👀 about demon the fallen? I don't often see the smaller splats getting a lot of attention so pls feel free to post what you like 👀
I wrote about it a little bit ago here ! But demon the fallen is my son, my baby, my angel beloved splat, and I wish I had more energy to run more games, but I will be doing a private pbp with it soon <3 I love it very dearly.
dtf (great acronym) has a lot of similar themes as vampire, mage the awakening, and wraith, but with it's own unique outlook on immortality, the past, impending doom, and moving on despite massive cataclysm. To demons, the worst that could have happened already did, they are now free of eternal torture to explore a broken world which resembles nothing of the angelic perfection that it once was, and there's no real hope of ever returning to that either.
You have to grapple with suddenly being forced into a human body, and having all these alien emotions, memories and feelings. This ungodly power, this fear of something you can barely comprehend.
I think a lot of people unfortunately tend to see the demon - angelic/cristo centric thing and think its about religion when it's not really that at all and I get quite frustrated when it's reduced to that. Because the game is not about religion, it's not about worshipping a higher power, it's a long history of you and someone who was meant to love you, your parent. God is your father, you hate him but you also struggle to understand him. It's so viscerally human to look up and wonder why?? Why cant you, why did you, why? Is he there? Is he listening? God is not an active part, it's in the past. If you have estrangement with family ! boy is this relatable. Trying to make closure with someone who is never going to actually say or be the things you need from them.
I think personally, people should not feel put off by the cristo/biblical figures and rather take them as they are and understand this game isnt about ontological good versus ontological evil, and worship/cults can be no more than your ghoul system in vtm.
It's also one of the better avenues for disability and the morality/problems in punitive punishment. You have scars, injuries, trauma, and can even be barred from certain things, and to me as a chronically ill autistic person, that is very relatable. Many times I felt unfairly cursed because my peers were not stricken with the arbitrary cruelty of being unable to function the same as others.
That it's not that heaven was even spiteful or cruel, or thatyou were a good or bad person. It just happened and there's nothing you can do but try to find and manage this new existence, with memories of the old you and yet you can see people like you doing just fine, why did it happen to you?
I also enjoy the alien- inhuman aspect, because as an autistic person, I find the beast in vtm is something inherently violent and animalistic, it's destructive. and I honestly am very wary when inhumanness in the vtm sense is an analogue for being neurodivergent. Because what does that make wightdom?
Whereas in demon, it's not that anything is wrong with you, it's just who you are now, with your host and this otherworldly spirit in your body who is also you, wires are crossed and you're doing your best. You're trying to be human too, you have the blue print, you can observe, but it's - something is off and you don't always pass. I love it. I love exploring it. Many autistic folks indulge in therian/neo genders, and I think demon is such a great game to do that. Because demons dont care! they are creation spirits, to feel this thing in you that isnt human.
Lastly, demon is fantastic for cross splat play, the lore is rather seamless with wraith, hunter and vampire, and there's a lot of room to be really creative with your demon. I'm still writing my homebrew for apoc forms but if you love designing zulo forms- high torment, low torment, visages, there's so much room for creativity.
I also enjoy the factions, the desire to do good versus interfering/being a destructive force and yet what is evil. Your biggest bads are horribly tormented creatures that have lost themselves to their own grief and agony. Again, I love analysing whether 'oh kill all evil things' when it's like. God. that horrible person is hurting too, you're hurting too, this is a broken world, what now- what is the best approach to cope with it. A great contrast to wta imo, which is a bit too black and white in its reduction of Just Kill all the Wyrm.

i really think mage the ascension should be more popular with rp fans on this website especially vtm fans. i know it doesnt have a video game to get people into it like vtmb. i know it doesnt necessarily have to have the goth aesthetic that people like. and i know the source book is intimidating and huge and fuck off complicated and its a big barrier to entry i KNOW. but.
you can find a mage mechanic explanation for SO MANY things if you put your mage goggles on because mage was made with the goal of encompassing and putting mechanics to all of these narratives that sit to the left of possibility. which is what makes it so fuckin delicious to me. a lot of the factions of the game are rooted in societies, organisations, and loose associations of thought that held or still hold alternate beliefs about how the world works, because these are patterns of thinking that exist, and people could point to as explanations for why something unexplainable happened! there's a mage faction for people who believe in hermetic alchemy and a faction for people who believe in roko's basilisk, do you get what im saying
mage is sci fi and occult and steampunk and grunge and urban fantasy and horror and goth, if you want! you can play mage like a convoluted faction politics war game if you want. or like a grand questing adventure. or like a dark personal struggle. mages are anyone from an investment banker to an etsy witch to a televangelist to a marine biologist to a teen stoner or whoever. and this isn't a 'this is generic game ruleset that can adapt to anything' argument. there's a specific setting with extensive lore: its just that literally anyone can become a participant, as long as theyre weird enough in the head
the concept of paradigm, or 'how the universe functions/why your character believes impossible things are possible' is so fucking flexible and can create a million different characters, all with their own self imposed hard barriers. i dont believe mage is a good game for power gamers, because technically, yeah, sure, with the right spheres, a mage can do anything. but the fun is in looking into their brains and figuring out what they believe they can do, and what they believe they can't do. because belief is the hard limits of the system (that and being too obvious about breaking reality). and THEN because of how reality works, telling each character that theyre all right at the same time, so they can argue about it forever. it's delicious, its chaotic. someones hacking the matrix, someone else is reading goat entrails, someone else is doing a high ritual ceremony, someone else is tiktok reality shifting. all these people can be in the same party. take my hand. come play wizards with me

weirdest tabletop experience i ever had
be me in 2022
download a bundle of tabletop games at 3 am
find a giant pdf labeled "act one"
it's a game played by only exactly three people on different levels of reality.
you also play alternate universe versions of your characters on different levels in reality
secrets in the book are written in mirror writing
the whole book is an in-universe preserved text by someone in a different universe
i am so into this game.
best thing i've ever read.
i tell all my friends about it the next day.
"sounds cool, what's it called?"
i can find no evidence of this game.
i can find no evidence that this game ever existed.
i'm not even sure what bundle it was in.
all my friends develop the theory that this game is a dream i had.
they tease me about The Time Bird Dreamed An Entire TTRPG That Could Only Be Read In A Mirror
i find the game three years later
it's about dreams
anyway if you wished Invisible Sun was weirder you may enjoy Disparateum by Rathayibacter
