the most insane double casting iāve heard of is ophelia and horatio being played by the same actress. the implications of that drive me crazy

Gonna go see a production of Hamlet at the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival later this evening. Apparently, Hamlet is played by a girl in this version. Whether or not that means we get toxic yuri is yet to be seen.

"To Be or Not to Be⦠Bisexual": A Theory in Five Witty Acts - (AKA, I Agree With Our Lord and Savior Sir Ian McKellen and Won't be Convinced Otherwise. I Also Have Evidence.)
Act I: The Ghost of Subtext Past Letās start with the obvious: Hamlet has chemistry with literally everyone. The man flirts with Ophelia and Horatio with the same melancholic fire and barely disguised yearning. His love life reads like a bisexual disaster playlist.
Evidence A:
"I loved Ophelia" ā Sure, standard tragic love interest.
But then⦠āGive me that man / That is not passionās slave and I will wear him / In my heartās core, ay, in my heart of heart.ā to Horatio?? Sorry, what straight man poetically declares he wants to wear his best friend like a locket?!
Act II: Daddy Issues and Gender Confusion Hamletās obsession with masculinity, femininity, and his place between them? Bisexual panic, darling. He literally says āFrailty, thy name is woman,ā then goes on to embody every single ātragic gay poetā vibe from Tumblr circa 2012. Lace shirts, dramatic soliloquies, and identity crises? Bisexual coded.
Also: Polonius thinks Hamlet's madness is caused by love. Which is actually a fair guess if you consider he might be spiraling over both his dead dad and the sexual identity crisis caused by his hot friend and emotionally unstable ex-girlfriend.
Act III: Theater Kid Energy The man stages a whole play to call out his uncleās sins. Hamlet is dramatic, manipulative, performative, and loves a good costume. Letās be honestāthis is peak bisexual theatre kid behavior. (I would know...) Bonus points for the fact that the play he puts on is about seduction and betrayal. Itās like watching a bi manās Instagram stories during breakup week.
Act IV: The Vibes Donāt Lie He dies in Horatioās arms. āNow cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince.ā Thatās not bros. Thatās Brakespeare. Thatās a man watching the love of his life tragically collapse after a whirlwind of trauma and unresolved emotions, and deciding to die right after. Horatio literally says he wants to drink poison to die with him.
This isnāt No Homo, itās Full Homo, Tragic Ending Edition.
Act V: Death, Drama, and the Undeniable Queer Subtext Letās be honest: Shakespeare didnāt not know what he was doing. He wrote Twelfth Night. He had boys kissing boys dressed as girls who were still boys. He was not afraid of a little queer tension. Hamlet being bi? Thatās not a stretchāitās practically Elizabethan canon.
In Conclusion:
Hamlet is a disaster bisexual. Heās romantically entangled with Ophelia, emotionally codependent on Horatio, and constantly drowning in poetic self-reflection. The man is one bad breakup and a good eyeliner away from starting a sad indie band called The Slings and Arrows. (If that's not an AU fanfic somewhere, we need to make it so.)

Re reading Hamlet Iām struck by this line from Horatio that I always missed before:
The very place puts toys of desperation,
Without more motive, into every brain
That looks so many fathoms to the sea
And hears it roar beneath.
Horatioās like āI mean EVERYONE gets suicidal on the cliff, though. You look down at the sea below and you just want to jump. Thatās normal. Everyone gets that. It doesnāt mean anything.ā
