Comparing MDF Board with Plywood and Particleboard
Tumblr media
Using wood for home utilities has become a common one but not, everyone can afford solid wood. So, many other types and grades of wood like plywood, MDF board and particleboards are available in the market that fits the common man’s budget.
And there comes confusion as to what to use for what as MDF board, plywood and particleboard seem the same! Though they all seem the same, they aren’t. It is a common doubt but with little extra knowledge, you can decide as to what kind and grade of wood to choose for a particular purpose.
What is MDF Board?
Tumblr media
Medium Density Fibreboard is an engineered wood, manufactured from the residuals (sawdust) of hardwood and softwood. The fibres are put in a defibrator with resin and binding wax under high pressure and temperature to create wooden boards. Is made up of 82% wood fibre, 9% urea-formaldehyde, resin glue, 8% water and 1% paraffin wax. They are used in making wall panels, storage units, doors, door frames, cabinets, and are commonly used for bookshelves, and other indoor projects.
ADVANTAGES:
It is soft and shapes well.
Has stable dimensions maintaining consistent strength and size throughout.
Perfect for drilling, machining, and cutting with no splits or chips but produces more dust.
Takes paint well, is flexible and has no visible wood grains or knots.
Lack of grains and softness makes it easy to cut along the edges and won’t splinter or crack.
Is less expansive and contraction than natural wood.
DISADVANTAGES:
It is heavy and denser than plywood and particleboard.
Creates more dust when cut or drilled.
As it is soft, it easily wraps and expands in humid environments if not sealed properly.
When cutting or sanding, it tends to release formaldehyde which is considered a human carcinogen. So, inhalation of particles must be avoided.
Though it is easy to cut, drill and work, it is heavy and big and must be handled with care.
Being made of fine fibre, it doesn’t hold screw well.
What is Particleboard?
Tumblr media
Particleboard or chipboard is another inexpensive product made using waste wood materials. It offers a realistic finish and is a solid, flat, and dense material.
Its smooth and flat surfaces allow for easy sticking of veneer and laminate materials. As they are soundproof, it is a good choice for speakers, theatres and perfect for the false ceiling of auditoriums.
Are popularly used to make low-end home décor furniture and used as an underlying layer for countertops as well.
ADVANTAGES
Can be easily drilled, cut, milled, painted, and glued.
Light-weighted and so easy for transportation and to work.
Easy to clean and maintain.
It is an eco-friendly product made from waste-wood products like sawdust, wood chips, and shavings and so no trees need to be cut.
As it can be easily glued, laminate or veneer is used to finish its surface to give the desired look.
Low cost.
DISADVANTAGES:
It is difficult to shape and mould as it tends to break or chip easily.
Not eco-friendly to recycle, as some toxic resins are used to manufacture it.
It is not strong when compared to other interior materials. It is low on strength and should be handled with care.
Less durable.
What is Plywood?
Tumblr media
Plywood is also engineered wood, made by layers of wood veneer. They not only come in different thicknesses based on the number of veneers but also in different grades based on the type of wood that has been used.
Low-grade plywood is used for wooden flooring at homes, while the higher grade is for making quality and durable cabinets and shelves.
It is used for furniture, roofing, exterior and interior walls, doors, floors, staircases, kitchen cabinets, and tabletops, where you want a large-stained wood surface.
Want to know about plywood? Then take a look at (link)
ADVANTAGES
Can be easily bent to do any shape.
Holds screw tightly as it has several layers of veneers.
Its cross-grain structure makes it more durable and stronger.
Based on the type of wood used, it can be effectively used for both indoor and outdoor projects.
They are naturally resistant and with different grades, it can be used for various purposes.
DISADVANTAGES:
When not cut properly, it may sprint up and creates voids.
It is expensive and higher the grade higher the price.
Is not well suited for any fancy cuts and curves.
Difference between MDF & Particleboard Plywood:
Tumblr media
These two alternative materials used in home décor are perfect for ready-made furniture.
MDF board is more strong and denser than particleboard.
Particleboard is low in cost when compared to MDF boards.
MDF has better resistance to moisture than particleboard.
When compared to MDF board, particleboard can last up to 25 years, whereas MDF last only for 10 years.
Particleboard can hold nails and screws better because of the small chips.
Particleboard is lightweight, less durable, less resistant to water and expands too much due to moisture compared to MDF.
Particleboards do not have a smooth surface as they are made up of wood shavings and chips, unlike MDF.
Difference between MDF & Plywood:
Tumblr media
Both may seem similar as they consist of both hardwood and softwood, but each serves a different purpose.
MDF is denser and weighs heavy, still, plywood is stronger and durable.
MDF is cheaper than plywood.
Price varies on the thickness and grade of the material.
Plywood looks more like real wood as it takes on the solid wood appearance better than MDF.
MDF has no grain like plywood and isn’t as smooth as plywood.
Finishing edge is not required for MDF, whereas for Plywood the layers are shown and so molding must be done.
MDF easily takes and looks great with paint. Plywood with its natural solid wood-like look is great for stains.
MDF is a softer material and happens to split or sag under pressure and different temperature, unlike plywood which won’t expand, contract or warp even under extreme temperatures.
RELATED: Difference between Particleboard and Plywood (link)
What to choose now?
MDF Boards is stronger and denser than plywood and particleboard and can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. But it doesn’t show good water-resistant as it can easily soak and swell. So, for outdoors, plywood would be a better choice than MDF for it is less susceptible to damage.
MDF Boards and particleboard are good for decorative panels or furniture that gets less exposed to weight and temperature. Choose the one, that fits your budget and if you are planning to replace the wooden furniture often, then go for a cheaper one.

Resistant to chemical, high impact, fire, and insect.
Consumption of less energy during production. .
It is non-biodegradable but recyclable up to 10 times because of its sturdiness and longevity.
Offers UV protection.
UPVC DOORS & WINDOWS:
UPVC is considered one of the best commercial applicants. It is a high-performing material and is widely used for framing purposes. The windows show low conductivity. So, it minimizes the heat transfer in warmer climates and provides excellent thermal insulation in cooler conditions.
As it is resistant to salt water, it can be effectively used as bathroom doors and windows. UPVC windows with a Tilt and Turn design can be opened in two directions for optimum ventilation. It provides great sound and wind insulation.
Supreme quality UPVC windows cannot be matched with the other commonly used material. Its ergonomic design makes the UPVC windows better than wooden or aluminum windows.
What is WPC?

Types of Wooden Frames for Doors and Windows
Importance of Frames
Tumblr media
The primary job of a frame is to seal around and provide support to the entire system. It guards and holds the pane or any material inside it. The frame sizes the breadth of the wall and holds the object in a place. It also adds an aesthetic sense.
Different frames serve different purposes. Its strength and durability affect the longevity of the door and window. Exterior and interior frames usually have different properties, as the frames that are used outside will have to face different weather elements as compared to the interior ones.
Frame holds the window and the door into the wall of a building and acts as a boundary between them and the wall. They are important for leveling & support, hinging & closing, and locking & protection.
Parts of a Door & Window Frame
Tumblr media
The frame that surrounds the door is called a jamb in common and is made up of three separate pieces.
The horizontal piece above is called Head with two grooves into which the door jamb fits. (Head/upper jamb/lintel)
The horizontal piece below the door is called the Sill or threshold. It protects the door from water and gives rigidity to the frame.
The vertical long pieces on the sides of the door and window are called Door Stops. They are the tiny strips of wood that hold the door to its hinges.
Jambs or legs or hinge jamb are the vertically running pieces to which the hinges are attached.
DOOR FRAME
They are of two types. The internal door frames called the door linings are usually open frames. They aren’t sturdy as external ones. And the external is called closed frames.
It is the jamb that surrounds the door creating a frame into which it sits. The two vertical frames are called the side jambs and the horizontal is referred to as the head jamb. The door once hung in the wall frame is the one that solely holds it, and a door frame can be made load bearing too.
WINDOW FRAME
Window frame positions the pane of the window in its place with the aid of spacers. Glazing and the frame are vitally important to ensure the energy efficiency of a window. Also, it adds value and beauty. It draws the attention of the viewers and gives a complete look to space.
Different Materials used in Doors & Windows Frames
Frames can be made from a wide variety of materials or solely out of one material or a composite of numerous materials.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution for Wood and Furniture Manufacturing Industry
Tumblr media
Industrial Revolution:
The word Industrial Revolution is not new to the world. Since the beginning of the 18th century, the world has familiarized itself with different types of the industrial revolution and each has had a different objective to make the world work better. The first industrial revolution is also known as Industry 1.0.
Industry 1.0- the introduction & the use of mechanical machinery (18th century)
           Industry 2.0- electricity-powered industry (19th century)
Industry 3.0- the introduction of computers & the internet (20th century)
Industry 4.0- leveraging the full capacity of the Internet & creating smart factories (21st century)
Initially, in the traditional method of manufacturing, there was no differentiation between the designer and maker. Also, with time people expected customized & artistic designs and the labour cost and the cost of production to be cheap. To make this happen machines must replace the human toil and make the work simple yet effective. And the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0 is a German strategy for using high technology.
What is Industry 4.0 or Fourth Industrial Revolution?
Though it is a build-up of the third Industrial Revolution at the beginning of the 21st century, Fourth Industrial Revolution was in its infancy stage and considered a disruptive industry by the government, private sector, and the entire community at large. Also, furniture manufacturing plays an important role in determining the economic growth of a country. It is all about employing the full potential of digital technologies and creating smart companies by using artificial intelligence, big data analysis, and the internet of things.
What are the advancements of Industry 4.0?
Using technologies for industry 4.0 is not an easy task as most technologies then, were in their initial stage of development. The working method of the wood and manufacturing industry of isolation and automated cells was superseded by a connected and interconnected work with technology increasing the designing, production, and supply chain that benefits even the SME’s.
The gap between the designer and the production sector increased giving rise to independent designers who adapt fast to ICTs and ensured to shape the current possibilities of production.
Demands of Fourth Industrial Revolution:
Concerning wood and manufacturing enterprises, it was not immune to the practices of industry 4.0 as there was a shortage of professionals as the level of accuracy, quality, demand, and supply was taken over by the machines. Different standards for accessories and dimensions were adopted.
This Fourth Industrial Revolution of wood and furniture manufacturing offers mass customization of the material and design, speedy manufacturing, quality, low cost with increased productivity. This demanded a high degree of automation, intelligence, flexibility of the direction and made companies invest in ICTs (information and communication technology), equipment, and human resources.
Benefits of the wood and furniture manufacturing technology:
Ø  As mentioned, it paved the way for mass production in a short time and created more demand.
Ø  Data and reports about the plant are connected to machines and it can be monitored and automated regarding the manufacturing process of cutting, planting, assembly, chanting, machining, etc.
Ø  It made interconnection between devices and big data analysis easy.
Ø  Different types of equipment, products, and teams were connected under the same language called technology, and with the help of a post-processor, the integration of machines and software was connected.
Ø  This enabled the administration of the plant and its value chain through smart devices like tablets, pc, and smartphones.
Ø  Also, it performed certain activities like self-diagnosis, remote assistance, and self-adaptation.
Ø  Easy access to intelligent information about the production stage, design, logistics, quality, quantity, transportation, demand, entry of orders, new product, and maintenance is made. It controls the truckload too.
Ø  With a standardized measurement to evaluate the wood quality, material, determining colour, cut-outs, raw materials, semi or unfinished products, and dimensions with possible variants are defined. This made the accuracy of results.
Ø  Big data analysis and feedback with accurate and immediate information made high-quality smart business possible.
Ø  From need, stock availability, manufacturing, rejection, to supply everything can be automated and controlled. This business management saves time both for the purchaser and the worker.
Wood and furniture manufacturing:
Furniture is closely related to people's life and different furniture required different demands.
Office furniture- It requires large-scale automation as it influences the nature of work. Complex sensory interaction is needed to fix the elements and design creatively that adapts to the dynamic environment.
Modular furniture- IR4 offered a vast customization opportunity. Its possibilities of innovation in terms of personalization within the already established framework are made possible.
Avant-garde furniture- Here minimum number of active components is used to reconfigure it. It is an application of polymorphic robots to the interior environment by system optimization.
Interactive furniture- The surface property can be altered to show different lights and colours through their intelligence. The furniture can be manipulated and interactive, that it integrates the real and digital environment.
To handle all these techniques, the designer must be skilled in all the IoT and Artificial Intelligence, if not it may create a conflict between the real and simulated elements.
Industry 4.0/ Fourth Industrial Revolution has given rise to innovation and shifted the focus from simple lifeless furniture to elements that provide complex sensory interaction. It has risen financial possibilities, creativity, excess capacity, cost, and meets all market demands with low labour and resource cost.

Tumblr media
Here are few important steps to be followed:
Dust it off well and often with a soft and dry cotton cloth to avoid scratching and build-up of water or dust.
Occasional polishing can be done. It hides abrasions and helps retain its inner quality. Use the recommended polish or soap to do it.
Oil and wax the wood as it acts as a protective layer. Shiny varnish makes the wooden furniture look new and avoids direct scratches on the wooden surface.
Too much sunlight and heat exposure on wooden furniture will make them crack or creates ‘spotting’. So, use a cloth to cover it up or place it in a     place where it is not directly exposed.
Do not place any sharp materials or objects that will scratch the furniture    piece.
Also, if you find any cracks or open space in the furniture, make sure to clean it or seal the space properly. If not, it may damage the whole furniture.
Do not place extreme hot or cold objects on the wooden furniture. Extreme temperature differences will affect the texture of the wood.
Avoid water stagnation and any tough stains on the wood. They create dark spots or rings on the wood and the longer they stay the harder it is to remove and repair.
Some woods grow dark with time and usage and also expand or shrink. So before buying, make sure you know about the wood and how to maintain it.
At times, old woods develop an unpleasant odour. To avoid it, sprinkle baking soda or place a pan of charcoal. They remove the odour and refresh the air.
It may be a little time-consuming but they worth it. Always seek professional help and advice to maintain wooden furniture. With little care, one can make the furniture last long and strong.

Factors to be considered while choosing wood:
Select the type of wood according to the furniture and its usage. Like to make tables, walnut and maple woods are preferred. To make desks, oak and cherry woods are preferred.
Know about the type of resin that is used in plywood and decide the type accordingly.
Solid woods are preferred because of their natural resistance to climatic changes, durability, and ease of maintenance.
Also, for the kitchen choose water-resistant woods, for living rooms and outdoor furniture go for termite-resistant woods.
If you need the furniture to last for a long time, pick up hardwoods, if not softwoods.
Identify the wood with the colour, density, and pores.
If you are the person who often changes or replaces the furniture go for lightweight and medium quality woods.
Not all expensive woods are durable and resistant to all conditions. Each wood differs in its properties, pore size, fiber pattern, and tensile strength.
