Yasmina caught him staring and smirked.

"Like what you see, Kenji?"

He choked, looking away. "What?

No- I mean, I wasn't-"

Yasmina laughed, stretching her arms over her head, which only made matters worse.

"Relax. I'm just messing with you."

Kenji tried to glare, but it didn't quite land.

He wasn't sure why, but suddenly, he was seeing Yasmina in a way he never had before. She was confident, playful, and had this teasing edge that reminded him of…

Brooklyn.

The thought hit him like a slap. Yasmina and Brooklyn weren't the same, not exactly, but they had this same fire to them, this same energy that made them impossible to ignore. And somehow, he had never really noticed before.

And that was all it took. The moment felt right. He closed the distance between them, his hand cupping her cheek, and as their lips met, everything else faded away. The cool breeze, the sound of the water, the world beyond the oasis. They didn’t matter. It was just the two of them, finally letting go of all the hesitation, all the doubt.

Their kiss was deep, full of emotion, each of them pouring everything they’d been holding back into that single, perfect moment. It was everything they had both wanted, everything they had been afraid to say, all coming together in one kiss.

When they finally broke apart, breathless and flushed, Brooklyn couldn’t stop smiling. “I think we got it right this time.”

Darius chuckled softly, his heart still racing. “Yeah, I think we did.”

The truth crashed into her all at once… so sudden, it almost made her breath catch.

This whole time… she’d been waiting for something to feel easy.

But maybe what she really wanted was the person who made everything harder.

The fire flickered higher, crackling in the heavy silence.

Brooklyn’s fingers dug into her sleeves, heart pounding so loud she swore everyone could hear it.

There was only one name sitting on the tip of her tongue.

Only one choice that actually felt right, even if she didn’t fully understand why yet.

Her eyes flicked to Darius one last time.

He still wasn’t looking at her.

But somehow… it felt like he was waiting.

Brooklyn squeezed her fists so tightly her nails dug into her palms. The firelight flickered against her face as all eyes bore into her, waiting. Expecting

“The person I like is…” Her voice wavered, just barely.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

“…Darius.”

Silence.

The air felt thick, like the moment had stretched beyond reality. No one spoke. No one moved.

Then—

“NO. WAY.” Sammy shrieked, breaking the tension.

The entire group erupted.

The entire group turned to her.

Kenji’s eyes gleamed with interest. Darius shifted slightly, looking tense but unreadable.

Brooklyn’s hands clenched into fists.

No escape. No distractions.

She had to say it.

She took a shaky breath, heart hammering against her ribs.

“I—”

She hesitated.

She looked at Darius. Then at Kenji.

The fire crackled. Everyone leaned in, waiting.

Brooklyn closed her eyes.

And said the name.

The space between them felt too small. Or maybe it was just the way her pulse suddenly felt too loud.

Brooklyn shifted, her hand brushing against his in the process. She meant to move away, to play it off, but Darius didn’t move.

Didn’t flinch.

Didn’t look away.

She swallowed hard.

His gaze dropped, just for a second, to her lips, then back to her eyes.

The moment stretched, charged, and suddenly, Brooklyn felt like she couldn’t breathe.

Brooklyn glanced at him again, and for a moment, their eyes met in the starlit darkness. The night felt still just the two of them beneath the vast universe.

Silence fell between them again, but this time, it wasn’t awkward. It was comfortable. They had spent so much time arguing and misunderstanding each other, yet here they were, side by side, breathing the same cool night air.

Brooklyn shifted slightly, resting on her side, propped up on her elbow. Her loose braid had started to unravel, a few strands framing her face. In the faint glow of the stars, she looked…majestic.

Darius swallowed hard, feeling his pulse quicken. His mind was running in circles, but before he could stop himself, the words slipped out—

“…Can I kiss you?”

The second he said it, his entire body froze.

Oh my God. No. No, no, no, no, no.

His eyes went wide in horror. He hadn’t meant to say that out loud. It was just a thought. A dumb, fleeting thought that somehow bypassed every filter in his brain and escaped his mouth.

His heart pounded as he waited for Brooklyn’s reaction.

Darius barely slept.

Lying on his back, staring through a small gap in the shelter’s roof, Darius turned over his plan in his head again and again. The idea had come to him gradually, piece by piece, as he replayed every moment he’d spent with Brooklyn so far. He knew she liked beautiful sights. That much was obvious from the way she always had her camera in hand, chasing the perfect shot. But it was more than that. Her whole brand wasn’t just about filming pretty things; it was about capturing moments. Moments that made people feel something.

And then there was the way she reacted when Ben first mentioned stargazing. She hadn’t said much, hadn’t thrown herself into the conversation like Yasmina did, but Darius had noticed the little things. The way she smiled at the idea, small but real. The flicker of fascination in her eyes before she masked it with her usual nonchalance.

That’s when it clicked.

She wanted this. Even if she wouldn’t ask for it outright, even if she tried to act like she didn’t care. Darius knew she did. And he wanted to be the one to give her that experience. Not because he was trying to impress her, not because he wanted anything in return, but because… he just did. He wanted her to have something good. Something just for her.

Darius stared into the fire, the flames dancing in front of him, flickering like the confusion inside his mind. He hadn’t realized how tightly he’d been holding onto things. How much he’d been trying to steer every moment with her. Ben was right. The way he was handling things wasn’t working.

“But what if I don’t get another chance?” Darius asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Ben gave him a knowing look. “Then you better make this one count.”

Darius felt a knot form in his chest. Tomorrow. It had to be tomorrow. The thought of letting Brooklyn slip away while Kenji was clearly so at ease with her made him restless.

“I’ll do it,” Darius said, determination hardening in his tone. “I’ll apologize. And I’ll show her I’m not just some guy trying to fix things. I’ll be there. Just like you said.”

Ben clapped him on the back, grinning. “That’s the Darius I know. Now get some sleep. You’re going to need it tomorrow.”

As Ben wandered off to join the others, Darius stayed behind for a few more moments, the weight of his conversation with his friend lingering. He wasn’t sure what would happen after tomorrow, but he knew one thing for sure: he couldn’t keep pretending everything was fine while he watched Kenji get closer to Brooklyn.

Tomorrow, he was going to make his move.

Chapters: 6/18

One night, as they sat near the dying embers of the campfire while everyone else had gone to sleep, Ben nudged Darius with his elbow.

“So,” Ben said, voice low, “you and Brooklyn.”

Darius blinked. “What about us?”

Ben grinned. “Don’t play dumb. I see the way you look at her.”

Darius opened his mouth to protest, but Ben held up a hand. “Dude. You volunteered to go look for me with her when I went missing. You literally carried her back to camp when she was sick. And don’t think I didn’t see you staring at her when y’all were making that fire.”

Darius sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s not like that, man.”

“Really?” Ben smirked. “Then why are you blushing?”

Darius groaned. “Fine. Maybe I do like her.” He exhaled, shaking his head. “I don’t know, man. It’s weird. She’s loud, reckless, stubborn… but she’s also funny. And smart. And, I don’t know, she just gets people in a way that surprises me.”

Ben leaned forward. “So what are you gonna do about it?”

Darius hesitated. “Nothing,” he finally said. “I don’t even know if she likes me like that. And besides…” His expression darkened. “I think Kenji likes her too.”

Ben’s smirk disappeared. “Ah. That’s a problem.”

Darius didn’t respond. He just stared at the fire, watching as the embers flickered and dimmed.

The air between Darius and Kenji had started to shift. It wasn’t outright hostility, at least not yet. But there was an unspoken competition between them now. Anyone could sense the subtle tension in the way they spoke, the way they glanced at Brooklyn when the other was around.

Brooklyn, for her part, was oblivious to it. Or maybe she noticed but chose to ignore it.

She still teased Darius like always, poking fun at his serious nature. But she also found herself stealing glances at him when he wasn’t looking, noticing little things like how the firelight flickered in his deep brown eyes or how his dreadlocks complimented his features.

With Kenji, things felt easier, effortless. He made her laugh, made her feel light. But with Darius… it was different.

She didn’t know what that meant yet.

But something told her she was going to find out eventually.

Scent Of Your Perfume. Chapter 5

Within the first ten minutes, Brooklyn tripped over a rock.

“Watch your step,” Darius said, not looking up from the map.

Brooklyn dusted herself off, grumbling under her breath. “Yeah, yeah. Thanks, Captain Obvious.”

After another twenty minutes of hiking, Brooklyn was over it.

Darius shook his head, amused. “Just keep walking.”

Despite her complaints, Brooklyn had to admit. Darius knew what he was doing. He checked the map frequently, compared it to the compass, and adjusted their course accordingly. He walked with confidence, like he belonged here.

She sneaked a glance at him. The serious expression. The sharp focus. The way his brows tightened whenever he concentrated.

It was… kinda impressive.

A small part of her was beginning to feel safe with him leading.

Not that she’d ever admit that.

As they walked, Brooklyn caught herself glancing at Darius’s face more than once. His features were delicate, with an angular jaw and a faint dusting of stubble that only made him look more sophisticated. And when he smiled. Rarely, but enough to be noticed.  There was something about it that made her stomach flip.

She quickly looked away every time she caught herself staring, pretending to check the map or adjust her gear.

They moved forward, the steady rhythm of their footsteps the only sound breaking the silence. Darius glanced over at her. “You good?”

Brooklyn nodded quickly, her cheeks warm. “Yeah.”

He smiled. “If you say so.”

She didn’t say anything else, focusing on the path ahead
