Like obviously bro is abusive, nobody is fucking denying that, but he's more of a neglectful parent than a " throw beer bottles at my kid " parent and it irritates me so much when people boil him down to a single trait that isn't even his character archetype!!!!

He's the annoying Xbox loser older brother who leaves his shit everywhere and never grew up, not the abusive alcoholic father!!!!!

I know I'm probably getting a little too angry here but it just. Annoys me so much

The chronic mischaracterization of bro strider is driving me nuts so I'm gonna yap about it

I'm not denying he's abusive and sorta awful but GUYS you're overinflating it and making him very one note

Not only have I seen everyone neglect to base him on the TROPE HE IS BASED OFF OF I've seen people add abusive traits that he doesn't even have,,?

Warning for some sensitive topics, like child abuse, child neglect, s*xual ab*se, etc... points under the cut

1) he doesn't beat Dave,, I won't deny that he does injure Dave, and the strifes are something to note, BUT. Bro has never put his hands on Dave out of anger. He's never gone out of his way to hurt Dave outside of his "training" sessions (the strifes). It isn't a display of bro hating Dave and wanting to hurt him, it's rather bro wanting to prepare Dave, and just not being able to do that in a healthy way that isn't completely overboard.

2) he isnt verbally abusive, Idk where ppl get this from. Man, he doesn't even TALK. There's only one time where he even speaks to Dave, and besides that he's proven to be silent.

3) he's not homophobic?? This has never been even implied. Not even once. He's technically an older Dirk - who's been nothing but gay as hell this whole time - so why the hell would he be homophobic.

And he makes puppet porn films, he's so obviously involved in the kink community - which has always been tied to the lgbtq community - so he's probably surrounded by gay folks. If anything he'd be AT LEAST chill about it.

4) His filming and having smuppets around the house isn't s*xual ab*se. This is a pretty wild one, and I have reasons for this being outlandish - in my opinion.

Tackling the filming part. The cameras around the house are not intentionally filming Dave, and Dave is never proven to be the focus of these films. In the blender scene, Dave turns it on and the camera automatically goes off. It would've done that no matter who flicked the switch, even if it was Bro, and the focus was the puppet being blended. Not Dave. At most, his hand would've been shown.

Now, the smuppets. There's a common misconception that Bro just collects these things. Of course he doesn't collect them, he sells them for money. They are unused, and probably only messily strewn about to be sold - and because Bro is proven to be irresponsible and messy already.

Being surrounded by nsfw content doesn't make Dave sexually abused, it makes Bro highly irresponsible, but Dave is never a target for any of this. He's not even uncomfortable with the smuppets. It's just really really weird.

5) BRO DOESN'T HATE DAVE!! Man, I could talk about this for hours, but I'll keep it reasonable. Bro gave Dave the only proper room in their place, he still bothers to give him the things he knows he likes. He isn't aware of it himself - because he's childish, irresponsible and definitely not the type of person who should ever have children - but he doesn't hate Dave. In homestuck I've never seen solid evidence of bro downright hating Dave.

I think people struggle to make bro more than a one note character, and never bother to really portray his type of abuse in the correct way. Yeah, he is a abusive, but he's not an alcoholic father who beats his kid.

Man I'm contemplating writing a thing on the ways bro IS abusive. Cus he is. Just not in the way a lot of ppl think he is. Idk.
