-
Aurora headed home alone that evening. For a second, she thought there might be a wave of loneliness that would wash over her the second she got through the front door - but there was nothing. After an uphill battle that had lasted days, she finally had a second to breathe and sort through her own thoughts.
She was well aware that this moment of peace would only last for a short time, she knew she had a promise to keep, but just for a moment she could begin to come to terms with the events that had just unfolded.
Despite everything, there was a part of her that was going to miss S.H.I.E.L.D. She had given her entire life to training, to being the best, and it was all for nothing. She was going to miss her father, even if they didnât have a perfect relationship but she understood why he had to go.
However most of all, Aurora now had to deal with the fact that the cause she fought so valiantly for was simply a ruse, and she was just a pawn in a huge game of chess. That part hurt her more than she realised.
The blonde entered her apartment. It wasnât anything huge or special, but it was hers. The decor was minimalist but she liked it that way. The living room and kitchen was open plan, she had a large enough bathroom to have a bath and her room was also reasonably sized with a four poster bed in the centre and a few framed photos of her and her friends up on the walls. It was home to her, and she was grateful to even have that.
Aurora fixed herself a drink, pulling a bottle of scotch from the cupboard under the sink and pouring a small amount into a glass with ice. This wasnât her usual drinking style, in fact the bottle of liquor was really only there for when people came over, but considering the circumstances she made an exception.
Rory pulled the file from the tote bag she had placed on the counter and walked over to the sofa with that and her drink. She took a seat, took a sip and began to read through the partially redacted file detailing the life of the winter soldier, or James Buchanan Barnes as he was called in a few places.
Despite the brief nature of the documents, it was fair to say that the man had likely endured a fair amount. The details of him being frozen for years on end, only to be brought back to kill was a hard read - especially considering one of those times had likely been to kill her biological father, but still - she had a promise to keep, so continued reading as she sipped away at her drink.
Somewhere between her fifth and sixth drink, she must have passed out. Partially this had something to do with the drink, but mostly the emotional and physical exhaustion of the last week. Aurora awoke on her sofa, the sun shining through the drape curtains that shrouded the large window that led to the small balcony.
Washington , D.C was a beautiful city, and she was lucky to have a perfect view of it from her home. She rubbed her brown eyes, sitting up slowly as she felt the blood rush to her head before she saw the empty liquor bottle which explained the small ache behind her eyes.
The blonde stood up, walking over to the counter where she had left her phone. She checked the time, noticing a few contacts had replied to her about her investigation enquiries. That was when she remembered the promise made to Steve and all of the work that she had to do along with it.
She swiped slowly through the few responses, most of which were along the lines of âSorry, canât help you there!â but one, just one, gave her a lead and that was enough.
The last Aurora knew, the man had dragged Steve from the river. Now, it was unlikely that he had left the country yet. He was likely disoriented and didnât have the resources or funds to get a passport or any identification - so it was probable that he was still in the city.
The contact, a man named David, had sent her some cctv screenshots from The Smithsonian of a man who matched the description. He mentioned heâd been going there for the last two days, around the same time and just spending a few hours around the captain america exhibit. It was hard to make out his face, since he was wearing a baseball cap that covered it but in one of the pictures she could just about see the long hair at the back and noticed that he was wearing gloves - it was him.
âHeâs been going there each morning at 10 and leaving a few hours later. Sorry to hear about Fury, hope this helpsâ another text from David read. It was then that Aurora finally checked the time, 09:38 am. She hadnât overslept and actually had a chance at catching him there.
If she was being honest, she was hoping she wouldnât get any intel. She was hoping that she wasnât going to have to follow through with her promise, even if she knew deep down based on the things she had read that he needed her help - Rory wasnât sure if she had it in her. The fact that she couldnât remember her biological parents' voices made her resent him, as well as the dull ache in her hip that remained from where she was shot just a few days before.
Still. She had made a promise, which she intended to keep. Instead of spending too much time worrying, Aurora quickly redid her makeup which was left from the night before and changed her clothes, opting for a pair of gym leggings and a cropped hoodie in hopes that nobody would recognise her. Rory grabbed a light grey baseball cap, along with her car keys and left to head to the museum.
â
Bucky knew one thing as he walked away from the river that day, and that was that he knew nothing. The soldier had memories, but was desperately struggling to distinguish which of them were fiction. Bucky. The name rang through his mind as he attempted to get as far from the wreck as he could in a short time.
It was clear that HYDRA were no longer, and even if they were - he had been out long enough now that he knew he didnât want to go back, ever.
So there he was, drenched and on the run with nothing but the name âBuckyâ and the knowledge that he was supposed to know Captain America. He knew nobody else, he had nothing.
His first port of call was to change, managing to find an open locker at the train station with a bag of clothing in it, before changing into jeans and sweatshirt and ditching the black leather straight jacket that he was wearing. In the bag, there was some cash. Not much, not much at all, but enough to buy him some gloves to cover his metal hand as well as a hat in hopes that he would be less noticeable. Other than that, he had nothing.
The first night, he spent it wandering the streets of D.C. There were a few unseemly types out, but he didnât care. For the first time in what felt like, and nearly was, centuries - he had no orders. No mission. Nobody to report to. He was the closest to free he had been in a long time, so the feeling of the wind on his face made up for any shouting and yelling around him.
Before he knew it, it was daytime. The sun rose slowly and he watched it as he used some of the change he had left to buy something to eat. Then, before he knew it - he was at the steps of the Smithsonian waiting for it to open.
The signs out front displaying the advertisement for the Captain America exhibition were what drew him in. Bucky felt like this was the first piece of a million piece puzzle, but he had nothing else - so one piece was better than nothing.
Once he went, it became a ritual for the following days. The routine of going there and reading the same words and looking at photos of someone who was supposed to be him began to make it make sense as to why he pulled the man from the river and by the third day, he was confident that he was likely the man from the photos, even if he didnât know how.
â
Aurora arrived, parking lazily in the underground lot before running up and attempting to find the exhibition. She had been there already with Steve - so she had a rough idea, but the pounding of her heart in her chest made it harder to navigate. She still wasnât sure what she was walking into, Aurora was essentially unarmed and approaching a potentially hostile and violent super soldier. However, she reminded herself, he dragged Steve from the river and was there looking at photos of himself. How bad could he possibly be?
She arrived at the exhibit, scanning the backs of people's heads until she saw a figure standing at the âBucky Barnesâ mural type section, and instantly knew it was him.
Rory took a position and stood next to him, trying her best to stop her hand from trembling.
âDonât make any sudden movesâ She said in a neutral tone, keeping her eyes fixated on the mural in front of them âAnd please, donât try to run either. Iâm not here as a threat.â She stated.
Barnes stood as still as he could. The blonde that was standing next to him was strangely familiar, probably someone he had met earlier in the week. It was hard to tell if this was some sort of assasination attempt, but then again, considering the size difference between the two of them, he hoped sheâd be smarter than that.
âAre you Hydra?â He asked, trying himself not to tremble at the word âhydraâ.
âQuite the opposite, Mr. Barnes. Iâve been sent by Steve Rogers. Do you know who that is?â She asked, her eyes still dead forward.
Bucky tried his best to rack his brain for anything about the situation that seemed off, but truthfully, it didnât. The woman beside him, although confusing, was clearly not part of the group that tortured him.
âSure. Captain America. I read about him in this museum.â Bucky responded, not moving either, keeping his gaze fixed infront as he spoke.
âYes.â Aurora said softly, since he wasnât exactly wrong âBut I havenât been sent by Captain America. I have been sent by your friend.â She added, âThe friend that you pulled from the riverâ She spoke slowly, finally turning to look at the man.
He noticed the movement out of the corner of his eye, but chose to remain focused in front. âAll I know is what I have read about here.â He replied, visibly confused.
âSo you admit you were friends?â Aurora asked, trying to dig to find just a shred of humanity she could use to justify helping the man.
âI donât need anything from you, or Steve Rogersâ Bucky responded coldly, turning as if to walk away.
Instinctively, Rory grabbed his arm, realising quickly that there was metal under the clothing as opposed to flesh. He flinched slightly as she did this, but didnât try to over power her or run. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt anyone, he had never wanted to hurt anyone.
âJames, can I walk you through a few ways in which this could go?â The blonde asked, finally making eye contact with the man next to her. He looked at her as well, nodding slightly to her question while remaining very still.
Aurora noticed her hand was still on her arm, so she let go. He was clearly scared, and as much as she disliked him, he had been through enough already.
âOption 1, you leave here now by yourself as a wanted man. It took me less than a day to track you down, and I doubt Iâm the only one looking for you. No matter how strong or experienced you are, I donât think youâll make it a week.â She stated, not trying to be harsh but wanting to explain the truth of the situation he was in âHowever, Mr Barnes, itâs your lucky day because I am offering you option 2. Despite my less than fond feelings toward you, I am willing to help you. We can leave here together, go back to my place while I get us some passports, get out of the country then youâre free to do as you please after that.â Aurora concluded.
Free. That four letter word slipped off her tongue like it was nothing, but to him it was everything. He was baffled as to why she was helping him, but he really had no one else - so he really had no other choice.
âI prefer the sound of option 2â Bucky replied in a quiet tone, still avoiding eye contact.
Rory nodded âVery well.â She said âCan we go then, or are you planning on staring at yourself longer?â She asked, arching a brow and crossing her arms over her chest.
Bucky simply nodded, unsure what to say to the woman. It was clear to him that she had no intention of being friends with him, but for the time being he could handle that. He was just grateful for the chance she was offering him - even though he was still overly cautious toward her.
Aurora turned to leave, keeping a close eye on Bucky in case he tried to bolt on her. Instead, he followed close by as they headed out of the door.
âExcuse me?â A stranger spoke toward the two of them âExcuse me?â They repeated when they didnât get a response.
Bucky felt his breath hitch, while Aurora remained calm and collected and turned to the civilian. âYes?â She asked, offering a small smile.
âStargirl, right? Youâre an avenger!â The older man said âMy daughter loves you, do you think you could sign this?â He asked, offering a museum map and a pen for her to sign.
Rory breathed a sigh of relief that it was more to do with her than the man she was now stuck with âOf course!â She said with a smile âWhatâs her name?â She asked.
âRebecca.â The man replied, as Aurora made the autograph out to her along with her signature. âThank you!â He said, to which Aurora simply nodded and the two of them headed out of the side entrance.
âRebeccaâ, Bucky thought, the name rattling around in his head as the two walked. He wasnât entirely sure why, but it had some effect on him.
âSo is your name actually âstargirlâ?â Bucky asked the blonde, still unaware of her name.
âSeriously?â She asked, arching a brow at his stupid question.
Bucky stopped in his tracks, turning to look at her, grabbing her shoulder in the process to get her to turn to him. âYes, seriously. I donât know a single thing about you and youâre just expecting me to trust you. Something to go on would be nice.â He said, his voice cracking slightly.
Aurora forcefully turned as he grabbed her âGet your hand off of me.â She said firmly, to which he did without hesitation, clearly regretting doing that âI donât trust you either. You shot me, remember?â She spat.
He looked at her, a sadness coming over his expressions at her words âI did?â He asked, looking at her.
âYou did.â She snapped back âHowever, Steve told me youâre not a completely horrible person and I trust Steve, so unless you want to try this alone - weâre just going to have to trust each other a little bit until the point comes where we never have to see each other again, alright?â Rory said, carefully scanning her surroundings to make sure their altercation hadnât garnered the interest of any passers by.
âThat wasnât me- I..â He began, guilt rushing over him at the idea that he had hurt her âIâm sorry.â Bucky said, clearing his throat.
Aurora shook her head, Steve had said the same. That he was brainwashed and not in control, but the logistics didnât matter to her. As much as she wished she could just use that fact to forget what had happened, she couldnât. Rory was a good person, or at least she thought she was, but she was no saint and forgiveness was something she was still working on.
âI donât need an apology, I just need you to listen to me and try not to draw any unnecessary attention otherwise this just wonât workâ She responded with a sigh.
He nodded âUnderstood.â He replied âCan you at least tell me your name, or something I can call you other than stargirl?â Bucky asked with a shrug.
âMy nameâs Aurora butâ She hesitated, not sure whether either of them were on nickname terms âjust Rory is fine.â
âRory.â He repeated, trying to ensure he remembered her name âIâm Buckyâ He replied, almost asking her if that was his name.
Aurora nodded âItâsâŚâ She began âtime to goâ Rory finished, not wanting to lie and tell the man it was nice to meet him, because that simply wasnât the case, at least - not yet.
