My controversial Asterix opinion :

"Asterix as a series has a flawed history of representation and stereotypes, some of which are still present to this day"

And "to reduce Asterix as a racist comic book among many others when its core themes are anti-imperialism, culture diversity and resistance through humour is a sad example of poor reading comprehension"

And "the post WWII, immigration background from the authors gave them a particular insight that was reflected in the flavour of the series"

And "the original authors were white cis guys in the 1960s and it was also reflected in their writing"

And "the series changed its ways to approach some subjects but it's always been a biting satire of modern society, reflecting the struggles and questions of its time"

Are all statements that can and should coexist.

AN EXCERPT FROM MY ASTERIX FANFIC: GALLO-ROMAN

“Asterix! Come here, I have a favor to ask you.”

The warrior was heading to his own hut after bidding Obelix a good night. As he passed by the Druid to do the same along with their new guest.

“Of course,” his words coming out only just slightly slurred, though his voice had a solemn air to it and stood up straight, as if sobering up at the thought of the venerable Druid needing anything despite the late hour.

The Druid in question seemed to catch on to this and only chuckled.

“It’s nothing so serious, but it is important,” Panoramix assured. “I’m sure you remember our guest, Metadata.”

“I would hope I’m not so drunk to forget the girl who saved our venerable Druid.”

It’s 3 AM as of writing this and I can’t keep this in anymore. But hear me out: Asterix x Metadata.

Before anyone says anything, Metadata’s age is unconfirmed, but I headcanon her to be in her early twenties, as she has features that scream baby-face.

I will be projecting every problem I have with having a 16-18 year old face as a woman in my 20s onto a fictional character.

I feel like there’s not a lot of media portraying a young face as something bad or even inconvenient, as many women will see it as a blessing to have a young face as an older person. For example, I feel like people don’t take you seriously, or you’re being treated like a child, I’m not even talking about alcohol or bars.

This hasn’t happened to me (thank god) but imagine trying to date someone and people either think that you’re a victim or your partner’s child.

There’s also the academic side of it, I’m in college and I wouldn’t be surprised if some people looked at me in passing and thought I was some sort of high school prodigy, when I know I’m not. Would I be disappointing complete strangers?

These are some of the things I’m going to try to explore with my Asterix fanfic.

Back to my point of why I ship the two them (despite having only a few seconds of shared screen time at the end).

I feel like they’d get along well together, and it would be important for Asterix to talk to someone who has brains like Panoramix as the only other person with common sense in the entire village.

I also feel like they have similar problems, because she looks younger than actually is she would explain why she’s looked over by everyone in Rome, similar to Asterix in his own village, probably because he is canonically younger than everyone else. As age plays a huge role in how someone is perceived, despite everything else they have accomplished.

She fights with a quill, he fights with a sword but they’re both quick and clever, finding ingenious ways to solve problems, and cunning enough to escape other problems. She has the knowledge to solve, he has the experience and means to teach her how to put her ideas to practice and show her how.

Excerpt of Chapter One of my fic will be posted sometime tomorrow. I think it will be a slow-burn, exploring and expanding upon Metadata and her family.

Don’t know if this is obvious, but I really like Metadata. It’s too bad that characters like her never stick around, but just imagine if she did though. Like imagine a Roman experiencing all the village norms for the first time. Being confused about the fish fights, concerned about the bard being tied up then understanding, drinking the magic potion for the first time, etc.

What’s the thought on Metadata’s age? I headcanon her to be in her early 20’s. She looks a little younger than that but so do I. I’m in my 20’s but I’ve had people tell me that I look 16 or 18. I like to think that she has the same problem.

I think Mansions of the Gods actually confirms this; he gets really weak from hunger and isn't able to run as fast and also doesn't have the energy to fight.

I think his ravenous appetite is a side effect of him falling into the potion.
