Had Kelly not referred to her by name, Matilda would have been quite certain that she had been talking about some other, interesting, person. There was no way it could be her, right? What on earth did Matilda do that was so interesting? “Thanks,” she said, after a moment of silence, as she tried to wrap her head around it all. “A couple of weeks ago? Friends? … Spotted?” She couldn’t decide what part of that was the most confusing. “I’m not…I mean… what?” 

a warm chuckle escaped the head girl’s lips. ❛ yep. right here, so i figured this would be the best place to find you to have a chat.❜  kelly leaned back casually in her seat, and continued to smile over at the child. ❛ INTERESTING.❜  she repeated, ❛ of course you are. i know a lot of girls, but not a single one reading dostoyevsky, at least not at your age. do you go to school, matilda? ❜ she knew the answer, though it was likely considered impolite to state one way or the other. ❛ home-schooled, maybe? ❜

With only a little hesitance, Matilda shook the older girl’s hand. Following the introduction, she was beginning to feel more intrigued than concerned. “ I’m Matilda. ” Though, she had a feeling Kelly already knew that. A glance was spared down towards the book in her hands before she answered, “ Crime & Punishment… it’s in Russian but I’ve already read it once in English - sorry, how do you know my name? ” 

    her smile became a little SOFTER as she sensed the child’s hesitance. it certainly wasn’t her intent to put her on edge. brows rose as she glanced down to the book herself, the twins were right - she was special. ❛ you know russian?  that’s impressive, matilda. really. ❜  there was a pause before kelly answered.  ❛ well, a couple of friends of mine spotted you a few weeks ago. you’re a very INTERESTING person, did you know that? ❜

     ❛ yes. holistic detective. it refers to my belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. ❜  here goes the spiel. how many times has he explained this? and yet he doesn’t ever really tire of it. ❛ you’ve heard of holistic medicine, right? or, um, holistic therapy? it’s all about healing the whole person. and i am all about solving the whole crime. instead of bothering with all that tedious business of finding fingerprints and pocket fluff, i basically do whatever i feel like doing and figure it out along the way. ❜

   the further he continued into his explanation, the more intrigued kelly became. a detective who didn’t find clues, now there was something. the 'doing what he felt like' part appealed to her at least, even if she didn’t necessarily grasp how effective all of that could be when solving crimes.   ❛ and that works for you, does it? you’ve solved a lot of crimes that way? ❜ she wasn’t entirely sure on it all. a follow your gut instinct was important. but then again, so were facts.  ❛  i take it you’re not hired by the police. ❜
