For a while, it really confused me why Gabriel was chosen to be heaven's agent in hell. Not like, in universe, like as a storytelling decision from Hakita. There are 3 or 4 commonly accepted archangels. And of them, Gabriel is like the 2nd or 3rd best option for a Judge of Hell.

Most likely its that Hakita didn't care too much. He hadn't even read The Inferno when he started making the game based on it, and I don't think he has since.

But I really enjoy looking for narrative meaning in places where it probably doesn't exist. So imma shoot my shot.

The obvious choice for heaven's hell influencer is the archangel Michael. He's supposed to be a heavenly warrior and the one who will strike down Satan. It makes sense that he would be in hell as a job.

If you wanted to get more obscure, I'd point you towards the Apocalypse of Peter (like the first christan depiction of the apocalypse and i think also heaven and hell). In it, there is an Archangel described as one god tasked with preparing sinners with new bodies at The Day of Judgment for their time in hell. He, with the help of other angels, presides over and assists with sinners' torment. Pretty detailed and horrible torment at that.

An archangel chosen to help carry out gods judgment and helping to run the infrastructure of hell? That sounds pretty familiar! Could that be our boy? Nope, it's the archangel Uriel.

So why, Gabe? what does he have that these other more qualified arcangels don't?

He is the archangel of revelation.

His position as Judge of Hell might not make sense in universe, but that's because it's not what makes Gabriel, Gabriel. What makes him as a character is his capacity for personal growth and change. That requires introspection. That requires an angel to be able to look within themselves and realize they have the capacity to do wrong; something I'm not sure any other angel could do. Because that requires revelation

I'm also not sure any other angel could make the choice to trust their own judgment, to trust themselves and their insights over the comfort of willful ignorance. But Gabriel can. That's what makes him the most qualified to be Ultrakill’s Archangel.

Anyway, Gabe is a bitch and I like him.

I think Toriel is an alcoholic. The scene at the very end of chapter 4 where she's dancing with Sans, I wanted to highlight Kris's reaction.

They're disappointed and embarrassed Suzie has to see this, but they're not surprised like she is. They don't want to engage in this situation at all.

She's a happy drunk, having a good time, sure. She offers Kris some food, but doesn't engage with them at all. Doesn't check in why they were out so late or on their mental state. There's so many themes of neglect in deltarune that this clearly isn't just a one off event.

This scene is just a Lot, it just struck me mostly because I watched nearly this exact same scene play out with my own mother.

One thing I really love about Rain World's worldbuilding is how fresh of a take on the Advanced Precursor trope it has, just in the sense that there's a very real sense that the Benefactors were. just people.

Like, in broad strokes they are the Advanced Precursor trope, a bunch of stylish jerks that were there, built some cool ruins, fucked shit up, and are Gone now. But the way they go about it is refreshingly human. Like, ascending to a higher plane of existence is a classic thing for precursors to do but the benefactors give a real sense of what it would be like for a society to do that. Not just in the logistics but in the circumstances that would cause it.

It helps a lot that the remains they left behind are so telling about who they were. There's an endearing mundanity to a lot of the pearls that gives a sense that they were just people in the end, and we don't really get that stuff with other Advanced Precursors in media. I really can't imagine like, a chozo working minimum wage.

i think going to metropolis as survivor in expeditions is more fun than as arti in her campaign, because while arti's double jump makes it quite easy, survivor has to use the grapple worms found in metropolis, it gives a good little bit of challenge AND it makes you take the time to admire the place

I can't believe I managed to become a fan of deltarune after years of ignoring its existence in the span of two days (and way too much time in front of a screen).

One of the deeply worrying things about Israel's occupation of gaza and the war crimes and genocide they are committing is their proapgandising that it is a holy Jewish crusade, and labelling their atrocities as self defence.

An unforseen consequence is a rise in global antisemitism as people fall for the propaganda that Israel represents all Jewish people, but doesn't fall for their victim narrative. A friend of mine was shouted at by a stranger in the street wearing a set of queer pride pins for being "genocidal" despite her persistent and vocal condemnation of Israel's actions, and her consistent activism for Palestine because she "looks Jewish".

As it happens, she is Jewish, but she has mentioned multiple times during the course of events in Gaza that she has seen a huge increase in antisemitic rhetoric online, and in person, and primarily in liberal spaces. One individual went as far as saying "if the nazis had won, this wouldn't be happening to the Palestinian people" which is not only a deeply misinformed concept, but a reflection of the rise of the far right in America, and the growing nazi sympathy that it is causing the world over.

I, of course, stand with the people of Palestine, but I also fear for my friends, and for other Jewish people in my community. Israel's war crimes, their drive for genocide, is not reflective of the Jewish faith, and the sooner people recognise Israel for what it is - a fascist American colony hellbent on the elimination of the Palestinian people, and not what it claims to be, the safer the world will be for Jewish people.

It is not antisemitism to oppose Israel's war crimes or their genocide of the Palestinian people. It is antisemitism to blame Jewish people for their behaviour. It is antisemitism to claim the nazis were right.
