part 2: the summer

Izuku’s bull-headed childhood friend did his best at everything. No matter what it is. Be it handling quirks, close-range combat, long-range combat, studying, cooking, housework, playing instruments, or designing clothes. You name it. He’s practically perfect.

Except for having a crush on someone. He never did that before. He never experienced crushes. Katsuki Bakugo is uncrushable.

White Day followed after that sacred moment. As per old tradition, White Day is when boys are to reciprocate the gifts given to them or give obligatory gifts the same way girls do on Valentine’s Day. You can guess what happened next.

For the record, Izuku wasn’t stalking them. He happened to be within the vicinity. The vicinity was the dormitory’s kitchen where he tutored Ochako Trigonometry in the common room. She had given Izuku a heads-up that Katsuki asked to meet up with her that night. It wasn’t his business so Izuku didn't ask what it was for, but nothing stopped him from deducting assumptions. 

Naturally, he’d worry for her. Katsuki never developed romantic feelings for anyone before. What if he tries to fight her for making him feel a certain way? Exactly, what if he beats his crush up or something?

Nothing could have ever prepared Izuku for witnessing Katsuki beckon Ochako to one corner of the common room away from their other classmates’ eyes. Izuku scooted himself behind the farthest corner of the counter and quite precisely eavesdropped. He doesn’t usually do something like this, nor does Katsuki usually give gifts to other people.

Izuku’s eyes went raw from how many times he’d rubbed them to be sure he saw this correctly.

He bought her a new pink umbrella.

And a pack of ice cream mochi.

The strawberry kind.

Her favorite.

It was inside a pink paper bag. A pink paper bag. He went out of his way to get a pink paper bag for her. Who is this man anymore-

After that second sacred moment, it was noticeable (for Izuku) that Ochako became significantly sweeter around Katsuki. She's sweet to everyone, however Izuku can tell that the gesture shifted something between them.

Ochako greets Katsuki more often, more specifically whenever she drops by Izuku’s desk. They would spar at most two times a week, much to Tenya and Tsuyu’s surprise the first time she’d told them. The most important of all is Ochako would occasionally drop by the kitchen whenever Katsuki’s on cooking duty and have a little chat.

It was beautiful. A beautiful change. Izuku might actually tear up.

Except Katsuki had no initiative on his part.

Sometimes Izuku finds himself staring at his childhood friend pathetically, which earned him death threats that he'd casually brush off. He can’t help it. It drove him insane.

It’s as if they were asking him to do something about this.

But no.

Izuku couldn’t possibly.

“You’re not going home? Kero.” Mina, Tsuyu, and Ochako gathered at one spot in the common room, discussing their plans for summer vacation. Ochako rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly from Tsuyu’s worried remark. “There’s no need, after all. My parents aren’t always home since they’re busy with work. 

“It’s just a month. I’ll be fine!” The pink-cheeked girl displayed a smile that barely reached her eyes. Izuku and Tenya approached the girls after a moment of contemplating, visibly concerned over their friend. 

Mina pouted, “‘Chako chip, you’re always welcome to join my fam and me if you ever get bored here, okay?!” The offer put another smile on Ochako’s face. “Thank you, Mina.”

“My place isn’t far from here,” Izuku proposes, “Want me to accompany you? I mean, if you don’t mind being stuck here with me.” 

Finally, Ochako laughed. “You live here, too. Why are you asking me for permission?”

He scratched his cheek, “Well, you know,” and glanced at his peripherals to check if Katsuki was within earshot. He sat at the dining area two tables from where they stood. If there was an eavesdropper between the two childhood friends, it’d be Katsuki. It was worth a shot if the blond could think of an alibi to stay behind the dorms to still see her during summer break.

If he could just ignore the teases Mina does every time Izuku interacts with Ochako.

“I second the suggestion, Midoriya-kun!” Tenya jumped in, chopping the air with his hand.

“Thank you!” Ochako chirped, copying Tenya’s gestures like she usually does. “But I don’t want to hold you guys back from spending time with your families.” She regarded each of them, doing her best to lighten the mood. “We can have a sleepover before we part ways, how about that?”

With this, Mina squealed from excitement. “I love that idea! I’ll go get the others. Let’s go, Tsu!” And dragged Tsuyu with her for whatever reason. “It’s still 5 PM, kero.” And Tenya followed suit, already promoting sleepover protocols and sleep schedules while chopping the air again now with both hands. 

Izuku huffed and crossed his arms, watching his classmates. He heard Ochako sigh. “I’m serious though. You don’t have to stay.”

He held his arms up as if to surrender.

She raised a brow. “Your mom probably misses you, too.”

He nodded and doesn’t say anything, as tears formed in her eyes. He inwardly fumbled, panicking, because his mom never taught him what to do when he sees a girl cry. He did know one thing.

“Hug?” He asked unsure, awkwardly holding up an arm to invite her. She chuckled, probably at how lame he looked, yet nodded and bumped her head on his shoulder with a quiet sniffle. He settled his hand on her head and smoothed out her hair. It wasn’t the first time they’ve hugged like this, but it’s definitely the first time in the common room.

Then it hit him. Like somebody spat on him, Izuku jerked his head towards the dining area. Eijiro now joined him at the table and seemed to be snickering at them. He, on the other hand, who had his back facing them, now turned his full torso in their direction.

Whatever it is kind of Kacchan emotion plastered on his face at this moment, it was not happiness. Far from it even.

Ochako shifted from under his chin, “For how long are you gonna hold me for, Deku?” She exhaled a giggle, wiping her runny nose with her sweater sleeve.

Izuku does not know what compelled him for what he responds with. Absolutely no clue.

“Until someone gets jealous.”

This made Ochako laugh from the pit of her heart. Izuku considered this as hitting two birds with one stone as he maintained eye contact with Katsuki. Who now looked more pissed off than ever. Glaring the complete hell out of the devious bunny-looking boy.

It only occurred to Izuku that he had been smirking all this time.

This might’ve been more fun than he let on.

part 1: the spring

Izuku has always embraced change. He’s encountered so many drastic changes in his life even before high school started. He has met people from regular civilians to criminals in less than a year. Nothing would phase him at this point. Not unless it’s seeing his own bull-headed childhood friend unknowingly fold for a girl.

Said girl being his other best friend.

Let’s track back to when he began to notice. It may have been on Valentine’s Day when Ochako gave out obligatory chocolate to her friends. Obligatory chocolate isn’t a big deal. It is obligatory chocolate after all, and it's the first time they’ve properly celebrated Valentine's Day because the class had their minds full of the raid for the League of Villains.

It shouldn't be a big deal that Ochako handed these chocolates in a little pouch tied in a pink ribbon bow, their names written on a tag with her adorable handwriting. It’s not a big deal.

But why was Kacchan still holding it up and staring at it for a good, solid five minutes before stuffing it in his bag?

Not to be a creepy stalker like he can be at times (Izuku didn’t know that), but the blond sat in front of him; it wasn’t hard to notice. Izuku first thought nothing of it. Having know the other for the longest time, it surely must be the first time Katsuki received chocolate from a girl on arguably the most romantic day of the year. 

The feeling must be alien to Katsuki, but alas, it shouldn’t be a big deal. Izuku has known Ochako and Katsuki to be quite close. How’d that happen? Izuku has no idea. It did happen naturally, though. Ochako occasionally sends teasing jabs at Katsuki. Same way Eijiro, Denki and Hanta would to him. What’s different is Katsuki doesn’t give her death threats like he does his other friends. He’d call her names, jab back and that’s about it. It’s fascinating how he doesn’t tell her to drop dead even if it’s just lip service.

Now that Izuku thought about it, why has he only recognized this now?

From that point forward, Izuku finds himself observing their interactions, studying how discretely different his childhood friend treats this one particular girl. 

The thing is, Katsuki most probably doesn’t realize this himself.

Maybe hasn’t even fallen yet.

But he sure is about to be.

“Deku-kun!" Ochako approached him after class, tapping her finger at the corner of his desk. She already had her backpack hooked over her shoulders. "Let’s go?”

They had somewhere to go after school. The two of them alone. Nothing serious; Ochako needed to drop by the bookstore but none of her other friends were available, aside from Izuku. She needed somebody to make sure she didn’t get lost.

Like old Class A fashion, Denki and Minoru overheard their conversation and automatically jeered at the two. Mina then overheard the jeers and teased them for going on a date. Izuku and Ochako only laughed with them and didn't take it seriously, even if Ochako confessed to Izuku way back. She now took the teases light-heartedly. The confession became something both of them could look back on and laugh at nostalgically with Ochako’s full permission. 

Izuku glanced at the seat before him to see it’s been unoccupied. He already left? Classes only ended two minutes ago.

He couldn't have been bothered by the teases, right? Izuku hoped so. The last thing the latter wanted was another reason to be mad at each other again.

He shrugged and walked with Ochako out of the room. As they walked out, they fell into casual conversations. Ochako's giggles resonated within the hallway so much that Izuku had to sometimes shush her.

It’s pouring hard outside, as mentioned by Izuku as they take slower strides closer to the entrance. Ochako held out a finger, pointing at a familiar figure standing by the open doors.

“Kacchan!" 

Katsuki abruptly turned as if triggered by the voice associated with the very specific nickname, until the expression on his face changed the moment his eyes landed on the person standing next to Izuku.

Izuku definitely saw that.

He also caught a twitch or two in Katsuki’s eye before turning back in front of him. Like watching the rain pour down was the most interesting thing in the world. “You don't have an umbrella, Bakugo-kun?" Ochako initiated, leaning down by Katsuki's side to see his face. The blond only grunted in response.

“That won’t do!" The girl chirped, diving her hand deep in her backpack to reach for her umbrella, which she gave to Katsuki. Izuku watched as the other boy frowned, looking hard at the offer. “You can give it back later," he hears Ochako gently tell Katsuki before she grabs his hand to take the umbrella.

“Deku-kun’s umbrella is big enough to fit the both of us. We can use that!" 

As much as that statement was indeed true, Izuku reflexively flinched at the sight of a vein bulging from Katsuki’s forehead. Bad sign. Another reflex he did was pull Ochako by her shoulder when the feral boy decided to slam the umbrella on the ground.

“Hey! That’s my umbrella!” Ochako was rightfully mad.

“I don’t need it, goddamnit!” Katsuki was perpetually mad.

“You have to pay for that if it’s broken.” Izuku was tired.

“Then I’ll pay! I’m not fucking poor!”

“Excuse me?!”

The tension between the green-haired’s two friends was palpable. He was so used to this that knowing the underlying feelings going on made the whole thing even more amusing. Izuku wondered for a split second if Eijiro knew anything, but his trance was nudged back to reality after he saw Ochako bend down to pick her umbrella up to place it again inside Katsuki’s hand.

She took her time to wrap his fingers around the umbrella, and that’s so much skinship that girls like Ochako are only used to. Being her friend and all, it took a long while before Izuku got used to Ochako’s natural skinship, particularly after she confessed to him. He doesn’t freeze up from being touched anymore. Also, he felt bad having her apologize to him every time she little as touched a finger pad over his arm.

So, Izuku stared at the tint of red forming at the tips of Katsuki’s ears.

Before he could meet eyes with him, Izuku turned beyond the open doors to see the rain had lightened up, but it was still drizzling. He took this as his cue to open his own umbrella.

“Wouldn’t want you to get sick, Bakugo-kun.” He hears Ochako, who gently persuades Katsuki to use her umbrella for the second time. “If you get sick, I’ll nurse you to health. Do you want that?!”

Izuku could not make up for how much struggle Katsuki had to grumble out a simple, “Fuck no.”

And he didn’t have to have Ochako face him to see the bright smile she gave Katsuki. “Good!” The way Katsuki stared at her was enough. 

The two set off and bid ‘see you later’s. They never got a response. Ochako was happy either way. Walking under the same umbrella, with the brunette holding his arm to pull herself closer, Izuku looked back to where they left him. He hasn’t moved an inch. The hand holding the pastel pink umbrella still hovering before him, while his eyes bore at their backs as they stepped further and further away.

Izuku wouldn’t be one to assume another person’s feelings, but he was observant to understand body language and expressions and what they meant to say. 

Izuku is confident about the fact that Katsuki has fallen in love with Ochako.
