Forged by Fire: How to Build an Unwavering Resiliency
Forged by Fire: How to Build an Unwavering Resiliency
"Calm seas never made a good sailor." Franklin D Roosevelt
Tumblr media
It is often said that the best way to learn your way around town, is to get lost, and then find your way. I understand with today's technology, that this notion may seem irrelevant, but the idea behind it is timeless. I am also old enough to remember my mother pulling over and taking out a map to figure out the next turn we have to take. Technology by nature is designed to make our lives easier, and if our ancestors were around to see the development of supermarkets and smartphones, they would be scoffing about how good we have it. Ease and peace of mind are all good and well, but it through the hardships, trials, and tribulations of life that we learn the most about the world, and ourselves.
For the sake of this post, we will break down life's challenges into two main categories, those by choice and those by circumstance. It is important for our personal growth, that we constantly look for opportunities to challenge ourselves, to acquire new knowledge, new skills, not in the pursuit of perfection, but of consistent and positive progress. The path of least resistance may seem enticing, but it is a route that will rob you of opportunity, and shield you from the fires of life, that can forge a stronger, more resilient, and powerful you. I challenge you to welcome resistance, to embrace discomfort and the unknown in your life, and use such opportunities to see what you are really made of. That way, you are ready when life throws the unexpected in your direction.
In essence, you are preparing yourself for the hardships of life, and along the way, hopefully pursuing your interests, setting goals, and making the most of your short, fleeting time on this planet. The question I want you to ask yourself when tough times hit is, "What can I learn from this?" You may not want to go through a particular experience, but if you have to, you might as well try and take something away from it and use it to strengthen your position for the next time the storms arrive. If you look back on your life, you will probably see that you learned the most from your toughest teacher who raised the bar of expectations and asked you to reach for it. You will also see that you learned your most important lessons from your greatest failures and setbacks.
Public speaking has long been considered a universal fear for most people, and deservingly so. How is it that one would get more comfortable and capable with speaking in such an arena? You guessed it, by simply seeking opportunities to do it more, and embracing whatever comes of it. To develop an unwavering resiliency, you must be open to facing adversity with the attitude that you will succeed, no matter what comes your way. Just keep moving forwards, earning small wins and confidence along the way. Wars are won through smaller, key victories, and maintaining morale and urgency along the way. Your mindset is everything.
I used to coach golf and as much as the sport requires physical precision, it is much more of a mental game than anything else. If you set up over the ball, expecting to make a bad swing or slice it into the woods, you will very likely do that. Instead, I would encourage you to focus on your setup, trust your practice and your swing, pick your target and go. If you put a good swing on it, but catch a bad bounce, take the same attitude to your next shot, and you will find the green.
The most important thing I want you to take away from this post, is that you must always strive to keep moving forwards, no matter what you face. Life is tough, but you are tougher, and if you don't believe that about yourself, than you haven't had enough opportunities to prove it to yourself yet. I hope you enjoyed this post, and as always, take care, God bless, and be well.

Ah, this is just too good not to re-post!
Thanks @bowldrips !
"–Odin turned into an eagle and fled, his belly full of stolen mead. Suttungr furiously did the same, giving chase to the wiley Wanderer. When the other Æsir saw Odin returning they rushed to find anything they could use to catch the precious drops of gold falling from his beak.
For this was no ordinary mead. It was the Mead of Poetry, brewed from Bragi's blood and honeyed tongue. It was so precious that they even collected the drops that fell from Odin's other end when Suttungr's speed startled him.
This was called "skáldfífla hlutr", the "rhymester's share". It was reserved for lesser skalds and scholars. Those who wrote cruder verses–what could be called today "shit-posting"."

Scream it from the rooftops!
Nazis will never be welcome in paganism. They have no space in our communities, we will have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to nazis. You have no right to the cultures, gods and religions you hijack to spread your disgusting ideologies. You will find no refuge or comraderie amongst pagans.
Reblog to let nazis know they’re not welcome here.

Get yourself a fabric store that will light your fabric on fire for you
No but legit I asked what the fiber content of something was and the guy didn’t know so he cut a chunk off and lit it on fire and felt the ashes and was like. Yeah this is mostly cotton with a lil bit of silk. And that was the moment I knew. This is it. This is the fabric store for me. Also that guy is marriage material. Not for me but damn some person is gonna be so happy with him.

getting back into your practice after a break
Life is life and sometimes you take a break from or lose touch with your practice for a time. Once that moment passes and you want to get back into it, it can feel different from was before and can be really daunting. So, what to do you to get back into the swing of things? These are just a few of my ideas and tips that I personally use as an ADHDer who constantly swings ona spectrum between hyperfixation and total apathy.
Step 1 - Cleaning up
Usually when I grow distant from my practice I just kind of drop and leave things as they are and don't touch them for a while. That means that the first thing that I do is clean all of that up to pick up where I left off. In this step you can do things like:
Clean up your altar(s)
Cleanse your space
Refresh/reapply protections
Get new supplies
Step 2 - Clarifying intentions
In this step, I like to clarify why I'm getting back into my practice. I like to look at the issues that I'm facing and how my practice can help me overcome them and in what ways. Sometimes I also like to plan what I want to research in the future so I know what to go for once I get to that point. In this step, you can:
Write a list of issues in your life that you can tackle through your practice
Write a list of research topics you're interested in
Write a list of things you want to do such as spells and rituals
Check the date for any upcoming astrological events, moon phases or celebrations
Step 3 - Do it!
In this step, I look at the lists written in step 2 and figure out what to do. Sometimes I get stuck here so I would suggest doing whatever seems the simplest or what you're most excited to do. This helps you stay motivated and stops you from getting overwhelmed with complicated and intricate spells and rituals. Once you've done the first thing, it's easier to keep going and you're no longer as intimidated.
The list in step 2 can also help you with further research topics and stuff to focus on, so if you struggle with keeping up with your practice in general, I would suggest keeping that one up to date and using it regularly.
Good luck! I believe in you!

Thinking about the Bacchae, the translations and productions which treat it as a party right up til the end, where Dionysus so suddenly proves just how serious he's being
Thinking about the Hard Bard's production specifically, how he shouts, voice rough, full of rage, that they called his mother a whore
Thinking about how many productions make Pentheus an enjoyable character to watch, even if only because he's bumbling, and thinking how different a play it would be if he was genuinely gross (think if Trump were the politician)
Thinking about how what happens is SO very horrifying, how cruel and terrible it is, thinking about the moral questions and implications of it, how the gods are so nuanced and extreme
I really, really like these aspects of Dionysus. I adore that he, and the rest of the gods, are not wholesome constantly-positive angels. They are the divine, crude, base instincts and unremorseful natural disasters as much as they are kind, as much as they are sophisticated.
Dionysus is a god of duality but no god is without duality, it is inherent to and necessary for being a god.
Dionysus in the Bacchae is so, so kind. To those who have not wronged him. He is wonderful, he is charming, he is lovely and alluring and enticing. And he is also a god, one who should never be crossed, the roaring bull, the all-consuming madness.
Thinking about how everyone, everyone has a given condition which will allow them to lose themselves in pleasure and madness. Even if that condition is to destroy the facilitator of the experience. Thinking of how much Pentheus enjoys dressing as a mad woman. Thinking about how, even in his pleasurable madness, he is excited to destroy Dionysus. Thinking about whether that "justifies" Dionysus's detribution.
Thinking about how the play itself questions this, discusses it some. Thinking about Zeus indirectly condoning what happens.
Just..... Thinking about the Bacchae

friday night psa for all my americans:
polls have been on a knife edge: nerves are shot
there are some positive signs at the moment
you should provisionally buy into those signs
you might as well have hope. if you’re right, great! if you’re wrong, this weekend could be your last chance for relative peace for a while. the optimal strategy is to take advantage of it, lay in some joy if you can, at least build up a few extra hit points against the coming marathon boss fight
“let yourself feel hope” does Not mean “distract yourself from politics entirely” or “try to fake that there’s nothing to worry about.” if your weekend plans include phone banking or something else useful, please pursue them. if you don’t have it in you not to be on your phone all weekend, be on your damn phone all weekend without feeling guilty about it. all i’m saying is: when you see someone dooming between now and tuesday, take it with a grain of salt. when you see someone pointing out something good, or that might be good, don’t shoot them down. take the thought on board. let it pat your shoulder and offer you a cup of tea
