Portugal denies free gender transition (kind of)

During budget discussions, Portugal rejected making the reissuing of legal documents for transgender people free. Let's look at the proposal.  👇

Ever since 2020 [1] changing your name and sex in the civil registry became free. This means that anyone of legal age (or above 16 with approval from parents) can change their legal name and sex without having to pay any fees.

However, you are required to get new documents reflecting these changes. Within 30 days you’re required to get a new Citizen Card, as well as updating any documents you have like your Passport, Driver’s License, etc… [2]

Unlike the name change, these changes are not free. This means that realistically, changing your sex is still not free, given that you, have to pay for your Citizen's Card and any other documents you might need. Which leads to the question: why was this not approved?

Let’s take a look at who voted and for what. This proposal was presented by the “LIVRE” green party [3] and got favorable votes from the left. [4] The Socialist Party voted against it along with the far-right Chega.

This showcases the chokehold the Socialist party have on legislation. While in previous governments they had to negotiate with the Communist Party and the Left Bloc, now they're free from them, and only they decide on what does and doesn't pass.

i saw this person sketching in this busy avenue in porto, portugal. peak rush hour with cars passing through right in front of them. took me a couple of takes to get this photo right, plus several minutes of fiddling with my other camera-a film one-to get a nice shot of the scenery. and they stood still. drawing. i wonder how it turned out.

i miss those days

i shot these photos in this week back in september where i spent a week vacationing on a small cabin with my family. i shot a lot of black and white photos that week, mainly because it rained most days and the sky wasn't always all that bright. this was one of the few days when it was hot outside, so we went to the beach and i spent most of the time walking around taking photos and people-watching. now it's raining outside, but the sound of the rain doesn't feel the same as it did that week. the muted and brutal architecture of the city doesn't feel as embracing as the monochrome of these photos. i miss sleeping in that cabin hearing the rain pour outside or the sea in the distance, in the few rainless days. i miss those days.
