AS A KOREAN, THE DANGERS OF MISTRANSLATING “BLACK”
First of all, I would like to start off by giving myself a little credit. I was born in America and am fluent in English. Both my parents were born and raised in Korea, and I lived there for almost eight years before moving back to America. I am also fluent in Korean. I pride myself a little bit in my very clear understanding of both cultures, and would like to explain to anyone who wants to listen, what this ongoing debate about the Korean usage of the word “black” has been.
In America, the word “black” has many meanings. Of them, there are two predominantly popular uses. One of the uses is “black” as in the color black as opposed to blue or white or yellow. In Korean, this word is gum jong saek. The other definition is “black as in pertaining or belonging to any of the various populations characterized by dark skin pigmentation, specifically the dark-skinned peoples of Africa, Oceania, and Australia (dictionary.com). In this case, the word would be used as a slang term for a racial identifier. In Korean, this word is heu-gin
Now moving on to the usage of the word “black” in Korean. There are three ways to say black in Korean. One way refers to specifically and exclusively the racial identifier: heu-gin. Unlike the English word, the Korean word for “black” referring to race does not have dual meaning. I REPEAT. IT DOES NOT HAVE DUAL MEANING. THE WORD HEU-GIN ONLY REFERS TO RACE. IT DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING ELSE.
The second word for “black” in Korean has dual meaning. It can mean the shade of black as opposed to yellow, as in that cabinet is painted black. This is one meaning of the word ggamatah.
It’s other meaning of ggamatah is dark, as in “his skin is tan.” Notice, that ggamatah has two meanings whereas heu-gin only has one.
The third way to say “black” in Korean is gum jong saek. This only has one definition. It is black as in the color. Black as in “I wear black shoes,” and “funeral clothes are black”. Now, to review, the word heu-gin only has one meaning-race. Ggamatah has two meanings- tan/dark & color. Gum jong saek only has one meaning-color.
Now, translators do the best they can, and I totally respect them for what they do. Their job is probably very difficult, and most of the time, they do a great job. However, when they translate all of these diverse meanings into one word, it confuses the reader. All three of the words ggamatah, gum jong saek and heu-gin are translated into English as “black”, and you can see how that would be a problem.
When rap monster was calling them “too black”, he did not have a detailed enough grasp of the English language to realize that the word “black” in English does not mean the same thing it does in Korean. He said “black” meaning tan, not “black” referring to race.
This is an ongoing joke among idols and general Korean culture because Koreans tend to find pale skin more aesthetically pleasing. It has nothing to do with race. Namjoon makes fun of “black skin” not because he dislikes black people, but because Korean culture dislikes tan skin, regardless of the race of a person. It is the same way that American culture like tan skin, and makes fun of people who cannot get tans, but instead get sunburned.
To clarify, EXO making fun of Kai for his dark skin is as harmless and playful as me making fun of my Irish Biology teacher for not being able to get a tan (he’s so pale, he almost reflects light). He makes fun of himself about it too, and the joking is wholly consensual. Of course, pale skin and dark skin both have separate merits, and every skin type is beautiful. Namjoon’s joke is just a friendly jab at his friend, which is accepted by BTS judging on the laughter it elicited.
Now, does this mean that cultural whitewashing is healthy? Probably not. It’s just another unrealistic expectation of body being distributed by media, but it is no more racist than American media making our celebrities “tan” or “sun kissed”.
For those of you who thought the other members look offended, I highly doubt that any of them spoke and understood english well enough to understand the difference between “black” in English and “black” in Korean. They laughed because what Namjoon said means something different in Korean than it does in English. In Korean, it is a light joke. Namjoon did not understand that he was saying a racist slur.
This is a common problem with all translation of the term ggamatah to English. The only way to fix this problem is to create separate words in English that mean ggamatah, heu-gin, and gum jong saek. The confusion arises from the fact that the word “black” has so many meanings, and is thereby confusing in translation.
For anyone who did not know the distinction between heu-gin, gum jong saek and ggamatah, I understand your misunderstanding. It is honestly an easy mistake. I encourage those of you who made it to the end of this insanely long post to share it, to end more misunderstandings about the word. I hope we can be more rational about this in the future!!
Just to end on a light note, I think everyone’s skin is lovely, no matter the color, and I’m sure BTS thinks so too!!! I hope this was helpful!!!!

“I love that character,” I say as I come up with upsetting headcanons for them. “Absolutely adore them,” I tell you as I bunny up sad story ideas for them. “They’re my favorite,” I sigh as I pick the most depressing songs for a playlist for them.
“I just want them to be happy,” I insist as I write horribly angsty oneshots centered around their misery.

since the original post got deleted
and I pretty much am not going to let this get swept under the rug, I’m going to post this myself to share in mostly screencapped form (why screencapped? dunno. for the sake of having picture evidence in case I have to pull it up again I guess). I’ve linked it right up there, but here it is all right here anyway. since I seem to always have extra commentary about this crap.
as you all have probably seen, there are basically these “un-whitewashed” versions of bts fansite edits going around. most of the people I’ve run into seem to see no problem with this and there are several blogs dedicated to it, i think (I mean, on principle, fucking stop editing pictures you aren’t allowed to edit. credit or no, not allowed. stop.), but this was the situation at hand and the blog affiliated (fixeditbts). there was this:
Tumblr media
and a mutual follower of mine- someone who is pretty much in every right to speak out against this kind of issue but has been straight up ignored in the past, despite being Asian, because of their mixed white heritage, (whether that was the case here or not) responded as so (i’ll leave their name out for now in case they don’t want to be dragged into my personal choice to get confrontational about this):
Tumblr media
the person who runs this blog then rebutted:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( I’d like to mention here, that the funny thing about taking pictures is that nearly everything, including whether you’re inside or outside, time of day in relation to where the sun is in the sky (and if you’re inside, artificial light sources that usually give off a yellowish hue, sometimes a blue-ish, depending on what type of light), clothes being worn and how those colors absorb light, angles, surroundings, etc, will have an effect on the colors presented IN the photo. a good photographer (and some of these fansites are obviously pretty well versed with their cameras) knows how to balance those factors out to get the most neutral lighting/settings available. anyway, moving on. )
Tumblr media
remember that thing I said about artificial light sources giving off yellowish hues? yeah. this is it. literally. thats it.
Tumblr media
once again, giving credit to the fansites does NOT negate the fact that you are STILL editing these pictures without their consent. when they clearly state that you can’t. and “knowing” the outlook on Korean beauty standards from an outsider point of view does not magically grant you full awareness of cultural nuances. also, that picture has shit lighting.
anyway, this is long winded enough, but this was my reply. (I’ll, for once, preface this with the fact that I’ve been continuously triggered by this topic and continuously ignored as I try to speak out about it.  as a black person in America, I am someone likely to be subjected to whitewashing. my entire culture is fucking white washed.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not sure how long after I replied to this (day before I believe it was) that it got deleted on the actual blog without any acknowledgement to anything I had to say, but here it is folks.

there are really honestly a lot of things I”d like to say to debunk every single word of this-- though it’s better to just look at the post I’ve made on this here
but I”ll say it here anyway, because the chances you’ll look at that is slim. it’s better to just straight up confront the people perpetuating this Idea, I’m beginning to learn.
now, what makes me fucking mad is your use of “whitewash”. you’re looking at these east asian idols that, whether you like it are not, are not heavy on the melanin to begin with. it’s there, yeah, okay. you have your legitimate hakyeon’s and hyorin’s, but what happens in pictures is a combination of lighting (literally all of those pictures you’ve presented up there: bad and/or yellowish lighting to give the illusion that there is more melanin present than there is) and well. lighting. you aren’t doing anyone with darker skin any favors.
you have to understand how HEAVY the word whitewash is, and why this is not it. white washing implies racial oppression-- it implies an entire culture being ERASED. it implies racism, mostly. whitewashing is, (excuse my unrelated fandom example) is repeatedly casting Storm from X-men as these light-skinned black girls when her darker skin and culture is such a big part of her character.
white washing is NOT, oh this already not melanin heavy person has even less melanin than i’d like, so I’m going to literally make the assumption that every east asian idol that ever exists is secretly basking in the brown glory while ignoring actual brown people and the whitewashing they ACTUALLY face and the issues that come along with it. I’m not sure WHY in this godforsaken world you are expecting these east asian idols (especially ones like Suga who are about as pale as they get, which is FINE for christ sake) to be your poster children for beautiful melanin babies (meanwhile, where’s the love for south asians? the asians who don’t fit the stereotype of being lighter skinned?) no one is taking their culture away from them. all you’re doing is attaching and American standard onto a culture you know NOTHING about through the lives of these idols that, quite frankly, are fetizished enough already without you trying to exotify the traits they don’t genuinely have.
Colorism on the other hand, is an inter-race sort of cultural thing. i won’t deny that Hakyeon has faced it, that Hyorin has probably faced it, but you darkening these pictures aren’t doing jack fuck shit for them. it’s not proving anything but your sheep like mentality and desperation to sound as culturally and socially aware as you can.
So before you go around throwing these words at people, understand what it is. This is fucking nonsense.
( Oh, and one more thing. You claim that it’s “so hard to bring back their natural colors” when all “whitewashers” have to do is turn up the exposure etc.
That’s bullshit. for the sake of arguments like this, I’ve tried it.
It takes a collective effort of stripping out the yellows and reds, honestly, exposure/curves/level isn’t even NECESSARY to do it. it brightens a picture overall, but it does NOTHING to strip someone of their color. actually, on the contrary, you do this on a POC and it actually gives the browns/reds/yellows a more dramatic edge. Try again. )

Tumblr media
I rarely ever, no do I like to, do things like this but I’m not sure what else to do at the moment.
I’m having some financial issues stemming from being in the hospital and subsequently out of work for two weeks due to surgery. My check was horrible and I am not able to pay my bills, including rent. I racked up $2,000 in medical bills from gall bladder surgery and an emergency endoscopy to have a gall stone removed from my liver nearly three weeks ago. I have many things to pay for as well as registering my car by the end of next month, so I can keep going to work. And while being able to do so is a luxury, I am going to see my grandparents in Germany for the first time since 2001. But for what is most likely the last time before the Gods bring them back home; and I will barely be able to scrounge together money in case of emergencies while there.
So I am reaching out for help.
Tumblr media
Please take a look at my shop and consider a purchase, it would help me immensely and I would be beyond appreciative to have my creations adorning your beautiful selves. Here is my paypal as well, [email protected], anything at all will help me pay off my bills and I can’t even fully express in words how grateful I would be.
I love you all and am so glad to be a part of the Vulture and Tumblr community in it’s entirety.
Just taking time to read this and signal boosting would mean the world to me.

Yeah g and k uses the same symbol, so the pronunciation depends on where it is in the word! in this case , it's G since it's after an N and before a vowel! so yeah! Yoongi is right! ^^
i’ve been pronouncing yoongi as yoon-ji but i overheard rapmon pronouncing it as yoon-ghi and i’m super conflicted

So you think it's okay for people, adults, to write fictions, sexual ones about Jungkook? And what do you mean by "extreme" or the opposite? I am just curious as to what you are getting at fully in your post.
extreme = glorifying pedophilia in fics is extreme.
you miss the point of fanfiction. it’s FICTION. in which you have a character with the looks and particular traits of an idol. Everything else is FICTION.
i don’t read het fics/scenarios so i can’t speak for them. but in slash fics kookie gets paired up with another bts member, mostly one who is close to his age. also in almost every fic kookie is aged up.
so adult writer or not. It’s not like the writer has sex with kookie. It also doesn’t mean the writer is sexually attracted to kookie. it doesn’t make them a pedophile. AFTER ALL IT’S JUST FICTION. just a character in a story.
so unless the writer glorifies pedophilia by writing underage kookie x much older person smut etc there is literally nothing you can blame the writer for.
