The Alanis Morissette Musical Is Just Chaotic Enough To Capture 2018
Isn’t it ironic that a musical inspired by a 1995 album is possibly the most 2018 piece of theater imaginable? To be fair, Jagged Little Pill — currently running at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge — isn’t based on the album itself, instead using the music of Alanis Morissette t

There is one feature in Japanese groceries that I really love: they pay homage to the farmers that grow the vegetables they sell. The vegetable section is really quite huge, and buyers can choose to buy their 5-a-day from the “regular” vegetable aisle, meaning veg grown from all over the country, or those that are locally grown. In the supermarket near my home, they even have a small corner that sell vegetables from Gokigen farm, an organization that supports farmers with cognitive disabilities. Mind you that the I hardly ever see this corner full, because the produce gets snapped up in not time!
In may cases, people look down on those who till the land. That is the case in the Philippines where I grew up, where farmers are often portrayed as dirty and uneducated. In Japan however, farmers’ portraits are prominently displayed near their delectable produce at the local products’ aisle. They flash dignified smiles, and are proud of the fruits of their labor. I love this part of Japan where they give importance to this kind of work. After all, if it weren’t for farmers, who will grow our food?
Another good reason for this is accountability. These farmers are honest enough to reveal their faces, because they want to assure their customers that their produce is top quality. So in case you spinach is not up to scratch, you know exactly who to blame!
The beginning of February is setsubun, a holiday to celebrate the beginning of Spring. On the day of the festival (February 3), people (mostly kids) throw roasted soy beans at the demon (usually their father or teachers wearing a oni or demon mask) while chanting “oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi! (out with the demon, in with luck)” As you can see from the picture, Japanese oni hardly look like creatures that arise from the flames of hell. How could they? They are so cute! And they are scared of roasted soybeans! The caveat is that you can only have the same number of soybeans as your age, so make sure that your aim is better than a Storm Trooper’s.
So next time you’re in the neighborhood grocery store, try to see if you can find out who grew your veg. You never know what you might learn.
