Love’s a Mystery
A quiet knock.
Not hesitant, not rushed—just steady, measured, confident.
Theo James never had to question who it was. He knew your knocks. Knew your footsteps, your scent, the way you lingered outside a door before finally stepping inside. So, without even looking up from the case file on his desk, he called out,
"Come in, wife."
You huffed, stepping inside with that undeniable presence of yours. "You could at least pretend not to know it’s me," you muttered, arms crossing over your chest as you leaned against the doorway.
Theo finally looked up. And like always, you felt that dangerous pull in your stomach. The way his dark eyes settled on you, slow and consuming, like he was taking his time just drinking in the sight of you. He made it look effortless—his fitted black button-up with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, strong arms flexing just slightly as he leaned back in his chair.
"Why would I?" he asked, tilting his head. "I’d recognize my wife anywhere."
There it was. That word again. Wife. You weren’t legally married. No ceremony, no papers—hell, you hadn’t even properly discussed what you were. But to Theo? It didn’t matter. You were his. And that was that.
Your lips pressed into a thin line, shaking off whatever warmth his words sent down your spine. No. You had a mission today. And it wasn’t to let Theo James talk you into submission like he always did.
ā€œI want to work.ā€
Theo exhaled through his nose, already done with the conversation before it could even begin. He picked up the case file again, flipping through it like you hadn’t just said something absolutely unacceptable.
"No."
You scowled. ā€œI wasn’t asking, detective.ā€
His brow twitched at that, the corner of his lip just barely lifting before he shut it down. ā€œInteresting. Because it sure sounded like a request."
You pushed off the door, marching forward. "Theo, I can’t just sit here all day doing nothing while you go out and put yourself in danger."
His grip on the file tightened, but he didn't look up. "You don't need to do anything."
"But I want to."
Theo sighed, dragging a hand down his face before fixing you with that hard, unreadable stare. "No."
You groaned, plopping yourself down on his desk, legs swinging. He didn’t even blink at the way you invaded his space—like he was used to it. Like he liked it.
"I'm serious," you pressed, hands bracing yourself on the polished wood. "I want to help. I know your job is dangerous, but that’s exactly why I should be there. We should be in this together."
Theo’s jaw ticked. His patience was wearing thin. But you? You weren’t done yet.
You leaned forward, voice dropping just slightly. "Please, baby?"
Theo’s eyes darkened.
You knew what you were doing. You knew. And you could see the exact second his resolve started to crack. He sat back, rubbing a slow, calculated hand over his jaw, considering.
"You don’t play fair, sweetheart," he murmured, voice lower than before.
You grinned. "Never said I did."
A heavy silence. Then—
"No."
You let out an actual whine, throwing yourself onto his desk dramatically. "You’re so mean!"
Theo simply watched you, unimpressed, as you groaned against the wooden surface. "Are you done?"
You lifted your head just enough to pout at him.
Theo pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly at his limit. "You really think I’m letting you anywhere near my cases?"
"I wouldn’t get in the way!"
"You’d be the biggest distraction of my life, and you know it."
You smirked. "Oh, so you do think about me at work."
Theo gave you a look. "I live with you. I breathe you. When am I not thinking about you?"
Your cheeks burned, but you quickly shook it off. "Okay, but listen—"
"No."
"Baby, just let me—"
"Sweetheart, I will tie you to that bed and leave you there if you don't drop this conversation."
Your breath hitched.
Theo tilted his head, amused at your reaction.
"Now," he continued smoothly, leaning forward to brush a finger under your chin, tilting it up. "Are you going to keep pushing, or do I need to remind you what happens when you misbehave?"
A full-body shiver ran through you. But no. You had a goal. You weren’t backing down.
You took a deep breath. Steeled yourself.
And then—
You hit him with the deadliest weapon in your arsenal.
You begged.
"Please, baby?" Your voice softened, eyes wide, lashes fluttering. You reached out, slipping your fingers into his shirt, tugging gently. "Please let me help?"
Theo cursed under his breath, eyes screwing shut like he was physically in pain.
You bit your lip. You knew he couldn’t resist when you got like this. And judging by the way his grip tightened on the desk, his knuckles white, you were right.
Theo sighed, long and heavy, before finally opening his eyes again.
"Fine," he muttered.
Your face lit up. "Really?"
"On one condition."
You nodded eagerly. "Anything."
Theo leaned forward, so close now that his lips just barely ghosted over yours as he whispered,
"You don’t leave my side. Not even for a second."
Your breath caught.
Theo smirked. "Deal?"
You swallowed hard, nodding. "D-deal."
He hummed, pleased. "Good girl."
Oh. Oh, you were so in trouble.
