"About your portrait of Madame X, with her loose strap falling away from her naked shoulder?" - Bertha Russell, The Gilded Age Season 3: Episode 1
When John Singer Sargent's Portrait de Mme *** (Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau) debuted at the 1884 Paris Salon, it caused a huge scandal. The public's reaction was so negative that Sargent moved out of the country, and his high-society model’s reputation was ruined.
The portrait initially showed one of the dress straps hanging from Gautreau’s shoulder, and some people criticized it for being 'lewd'. But Parisian society's main issue with the portrait was that they found it 'tacky'.
Madame Gautreau was derided and jeered - people believed the painting hinted at her 'loose morals'. The married Gautreau already had a reputation as an adultress - it was rumored that she had affairs with French statesman Léon Gambetta and diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps. (Though some people sympathized with her alleged cheating since her husband was twice her age and said to be very unattractive.)
Apart from Gautreau's 'revealing' clothing in the portrait, the appearance of her very pale skin was also derided. Like some fashionable women of the day she may have used arsenic or maybe rice powder to lighten her skin. But people generally thought her skin's paleness was way too exaggerated and 'ghostly' looking in the portrait.
"Gautreau’s mother was furious. According to the Tribune article, she lamented to Sargent, “All Paris is making fun of my daughter... She is ruined. My people will be forced to defend themselves. She’ll die of chagrin.” Melodrama ensued. Gautreau never recovered from the shameful incident and retreated from Parisian society for the rest of her life. De Costa cites a letter in which she moaned, “I will try to get over the sadness which for several days has overwhelmed me and which makes me depressed enough to die.’” Sargent was meanwhile concerned with his own reputation. Critics so lambasted the canvas that the artist opted to make a crucial change to the composition: After the exhibition ended, he repainted Gautreau’s strap to fall properly on her shoulder. In 1886, he escaped his infamy in Paris and lived the rest of his life in London, never again taking such a risk with his practice. He did also take a major step to limit Gautreau’s notoriety: When he gave the painting to the Metropolitan Museum in 1916, he insisted the institution continue to disguise the subject’s identity. And thus, “Madame X” has, instead of adopting the far more banal Portrait of Mme. Pierre Gautreau, retained its teasing title." Why Madame X scandalized the art world - Alina Cohen

there is something so deeply funny to me abt how both kaidan and liara will always wind up falling for shepard regardless of how you play and which shepard you play as. they've been at this shit for years. they're old pros. by the point of me3, love imagining them just being like
kaidan: wow, the stars are amazing.
liara: yes, they are.
kaidan: you know who else is amazing?
liara: shepard?

#i really want to live here. like. sure there's space horrors and planet horrors. but. ATLANTIS
same. they really did go off with the set design, the mix of metal, stained glass, and lights. It's funny because when I was describing the city for a fic, I had to think of what someone might expect it to be (Greek seashore vibe) vs what it really was like (neo-tech future).
Neo-Greek 😂
Yes! They really did go off with the design. Metal, glass, wide spaces. Slanted edges and towering spires. Its a weird mix but they did it right.
She feels spacey but also cosy.

Yet another AO3 bot situation - please spread the word!
Hi, it's me again, the person who wrote that viral post about fanfiction plagiarism! Today I'm here to warn you about abuse perpetrated by bots who have stolen AO3 usernames.
There's currently an epidemic of bots going around leaving (apparently random) horrible, hateful comments on people's fics. This isn't the first time bots have invaded AO3, but the big problem with this wave is that they're using real AO3 usernames to do it.
I learned about this when another writer contacted me after receiving the following comment on their story:
Now, while that is my username, I DEFINITELY did not leave this comment (and anyone who would leave something like that on a fic should be slapped! What an awful thing to post). This fic is in a completely unrelated fandom that I have never participated in, nor has that author participated in any of my fandoms, so the probability of it being some intentional fandom drama thing to make me look bad is also low.
The writer whose fic the comment was left on enlisted the aid of some friends and tracked down other guest comments with unrelated usernames attached, which is pretty strong evidence that they are being left by bots at random.
The TL;DR: If you receive a cruel comment from a (Guest) with an actual AO3 username attached, it's most likely from a bot. Please do not lash out at or dogpile the AO3 user who owns that name, and who in all likelihood has no idea that their name has been hijacked for evil.
If finding this kind of comment on a fic, even left by a bot, is likely to upset you, I would recommend changing your comment settings so that only users who are logged in can leave comments. To do this, edit your story settings, and under "Privacy," select the radio button that says "Only registered users can comment," as shown below.
Please spread the word to other AO3 users! And if you see mean guest comments on other fics, maybe let the author know that it's probably from a bot and not a real person who thinks their writing is bad.
