(different anon) I think even Brevyn was supposed to be some sort of mirror to what Yasha was to Molly.
Also, and this is kinda unrelated, but do you remember the evil monologue? Lucien said that "when I died, when I scattered, and they put me back together, I was given a view behind the curtain and I saw the fallacy I had given everything for". This monologue made me think that he worshiped the Somnovem as gods before dying, then he saw them for what they truly were during those two years as purple stardust, and then, after waking up from the resurrection, he didn't see them as gods anymore. But that is not what happened in the book...
And Vess being an almost good guy being confronted by the villain with schizophrenia like characteristics did not sit well with me but it's more of a personal thing in this case...
I really really wanted to like the book in its entirety but maybe my expectations were too high...
Anyway, I love your Tombtakers origin story and it will always be canon in my heart!
AND THAT WOULD BE FINE IF NOT FOR CREE BEING RIGHT THERE ALREADY BEING THAT PARALLEL!!! The difference being… what? That Lucien betrayed her and do the comparison isn’t valid? I just can’t fucking handle the disrespect for my girl here.
YEAH THE BOOK SKIPPED RIGHT THE FUCK OVER HIS ASTRAL SEA FIELD TRIP LIKE UM THAT WAS IMPLICITLY CANON. Like the way Culpasi was talking it was like NOTHING happened when Lucien was scattered. Excuse??
Yeah I did not like that Vess was treated like a heroic person who had actually been fighting back against the Somnovem after fucking up. That’s not the way she talked to the Nein during the speak with dead, declaring herself the Nonagon and GLEEFULLY talking about how she literally tortured someone beyond death. That was bullshit and I had almost forgotten about it. Vess doesn’t deserve that kind of fucking redemption when there’s zero indication she’s changed like THEN WHY WERE YOU AT THE DEVIL’S SABBATH VESS???
My expectations were definitely high but I was not expecting so much to just be flat out offensively wrong like damn Africa what happened.
THANK YOU. I’ve gotten a lot of positive response about that and it’s not helping my ego but… I don’t think it’s ego to think you can do better when so much canon got blatantly ignored or overwritten. AND MY GIRL WAS SHAFTED. SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SECONDARY PROTAGONIST.

WFB 2022
This random idea have eaten me for a while ]=B References 1) Astronomic fact: colour of the star serves as indicator of its temperature. Red stars are cooler than the sun, with surface temperatures of 3,500 K for a bright red star and 2,500 K for a dark red star. The hottest stars are blue, with their surface temperatures falling anywhere between 10,000 K and 50,000 K
2) As any other language Japanese has phrases meant for love confessions, but the most common “I love you”-line is not as frequent there as one might think. One of the “synonyms” for ILU-phrase in Japan is “The Moon is especially beautiful today”. For a foreigner it wouldn’t be easy to deduce its hidden meaning. Such veiled confessions became popular due to Natsume Soseki (a Japanese writer that left a big impact on the modern Japanese literature), who passionately tried to convice everyone that english “I love you” is correctly translated as “The Moon is beatiful”.

Leverage Redemption spoilers in this post
——
God okay… I finished the season and I am losing my mind OT3-wise (in a good way) because like… I get why some people are upset about the whole Maria storyline, but I think I mostly disagree with what appears to be the prevailing opinion on this one, because paying attention to the subtext and the themes has me going insane.
Liiiiiike… Maria’s whole function in the story is to A) show that Eliot is looking for a romance and how he defines that, and B) act as a narrative foil to Parker and Hardison in Eliot’s life. That’s why she’s there. (It’s also why she’s unfortunately, unavoidably underdeveloped as character.) These episodes were written and presented as a full set, and her relationship with Eliot was created to fail on purpose. Their relationship and the ways it doesn’t work, and the reasons why she rejects Eliot in the end, are to conversely highlight what Eliot needs—and how Hardison and Parker fit the bill.
A big theme for Eliot is that, on some level, he still struggles with not only the idea that he’s done bad things but also that redemption is an impossibility for him. That’s how he feels—and it’s worth noting that the idea of redemption being a daily, never-ending process is a theme introduced into the season to Harry via Hardison talking about Eliot. Along those lines, redemption being impossible makes Eliot feel he doesn’t deserve happiness in totality, and Maria calls him out for it. He clearly wants happiness, and more specifically a romantic kind, but his burdens are heavy so he has to accept that it’s okay for him to have that. And he has to figure out what that looks like for him.
Eliot thinks the fact that he helps people now, and does good things, is now the best thing about him; he breaks the law but does it for the right reasons and it keeps him going. Fascinatingly, Maria sees it the opposite way: sure, you do good, but you break the law and I can’t abide by that. It is a fundamental ideological difference in them that wouldn’t and can’t ever be overcome. This even subtly ties into the theme of redefining morality spelled out in this season, too!
So, as Eliot reasons out loud… Everyday criminals are too flighty. Law enforcement people can’t work for the above reasons, which this season just helpfully proved. Eliot now knows and accepts he wants someone as a romantic partner who’s in the life in a steady capacity, but understands him and who he can talk to about his day. Maybe he’s even accepted that he finally deserves to pursue that form of happiness—as seen with him trying to open up to Maria. And that’s when Hardison and Parker say, “We’ll always be here for you forever,” and the ~till death do us part~ vow is brought back up.
I understand that everyone is like, “It’s 10 years later! We were told the OT3 was safe! Why was Eliot even looking to date someone else?” and I hear that, I get it, I do, but I personally feel like I am feasting on this nuance and complexity and what his failed relationship with Maria implies about his enduring relationship with Hardison and Parker—and, subsequently, its potential.
The original Season 5 finale, in which “till my dying day” was first used, was what we all took as the canonization of the OT3, and it was confirmed as much by John Rogers. So people are like, “Why did they go back on that when Eliot said he didn’t have to search anymore?” And again, I understand those complaints, but I feel like… I don’t know. Like the reuse of that phrase, in the context of a conversation explicitly about romance this time, was deliberate.
This season also defines love, and especially romantic love, as opening up to someone else. We see it in the flashbacks with Stella telling Jo she doesn’t open up easily, and later when she worries that Jo wouldn’t want her back now that she knows the truth, but then their love survives. On the dark flip side, Harry’s ex wife Grace is shown the truth about who Ethan is, and she still chooses to love him anyway because he takes care of her; neither I nor the narrative condone Ethan’s immorality, but it still fits the theme. It culminates in Eliot opening up to Parker because he admires her relationship with Hardison, and the advice Parker gives Eliot in return about building a romantic relationship: you have to let Maria know you. Someone has to know you and know what you’ve done, but not let that past matter more than loving you. So Eliot opens up to Maria, or begins to attempt to… and lo and behold, she rejects him.
But repeatedly, especially in the back half of the episodes, you have Parker making these little declarative statements that show how well she knows Eliot. She knows what his eyebrows mean, she knows he was upset that Hardison was gone and trying to hide it (!!!!!!!! And he was! He doesn’t brush it off!), etc. We know she knows Eliot’s past. And all the way back in episode one, Hardison’s speech to Harry about who Eliot is? How Eliot gets up every morning and says there’s more work to do? Yeah. They see him, and they love him, in all the ways. Somehow, it seems like the implication is that Eliot’s just not realized the full scope of that yet, and how the door is open to romance with them. Hell, the implication is also that until very recently, Eliot didn’t think he deserved a shot at happiness via a legitimate romance.
They had to give Eliot an arc, and thus, something to ~struggle with~ and grow into. Each character got one (the heaviest parts of Parker’s and Breanna’s round off in 1A; Eliot, Sophie, and Harry’s in 1B). Setting up Eliot to recognize that he deserves complete happiness and he doesn’t need to search for romance outside of the forever partners he already has, who are waiting on him, feels like it was his.
I’m not saying like… “They are deliberately setting up a way to go explicit with the OT3,” because I do not live in a fantasy world where polyamorous queer rep is common on screen. But if they were able to do that down the line though, unequivocally explicitly, this would be the way to set it up for general audiences who don’t know what John Rogers said on Twitter dot com in 2013, and who may not even know what legitimate and healthy polyamory looks like. And what I am saying is that, regardless… all roads in how the Maria storyline went down end in showing that Eliot is finally seeking romance but what she lacks is what the OT3 already has, and that the OT3 is safe, and it’s why that storyline was there at all. It purposefully wraps up with that OT3 scene. Eliot just explicitly said he can’t date other criminals or law enforcement people. Who the hell is left, even hypothetically? Even if the OT3 stays (beautiful and glorious) subtext moving forward, they can’t exactly stick him with another random woman, can they? Been there, done that, made a doomed romance his arc, called out its futility in the text, got that out of the way.
So this is a very long post to say this: I, like everyone else, have seen the OT3 as canon for a very long time and with good reason. I have also read dozens of fics about concepts where it may take a year or so because of Eliot feeling he doesn’t deserve happiness (canon), and doesn’t deserve Parker and Hardison like that or even thinks it’s an option, and not wanting to mess up their romance that he admires (canon), and Parker worrying Eliot could leave if he finds romantic happiness somewhere else (canon), and eventually they all get their shit together and are together together. But if I do a little bit of reframing in my brain, and pay attention to how his characterization is being presented in Redemption? Ten years of offscreen pining and slow burn doesn’t seem all that farfetched. Maybe s1 of Redemption is like that kind of fic. Maybe secret chili recipe is the new pretzels.
Again, I understand why people may be upset. But I think we learned a lot about where Eliot stands as a character right now in the context of continued canon, through this romantic relationship that was destined to fail. And I personally really love how it’s closed out with finality, in a discussion about romance, with a note of both reiterating and crucially slightly hinting at a reframing of what the mutual “till our dying day” means. It feels very validating to me.
I’m not saying anyone else has to love it here, but I love it here. That’s all. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
